Chapter 42:
Chapter 42:
Though the original owner was arrogant and headstrong, he was a kind-hearted child deep down. Having lost his mother at a young age, he grew up like a hedgehog, bristling with thorns, never learning how to navigate social nuances.
Jiang Feng thought about this, then went downstairs to buy gifts and carefully packed them until early morning.
At nine o’clock, the doorbell rang.
The show crew had arrived.
When Jiang Nan heard them, he nervously adjusted his clothes, carefully placed the prepared breakfast on the table, and went to open the door.
“Hello, is this the Jiang family?” one of the crew members asked.
“Yes,” Jiang Nan replied.
“Hello, we’re from the Metamorphosis program. You must be Jiang Nan,” the director said, admiring Jiang Nan’s gentle demeanor. He looked like the ideal big brother. It seemed clear that the real focus of the show was his younger brother, Jiang Feng, as Jiang’s father had discussed earlier.
The cameraman and director glanced around. “Where’s Jiang Feng?”
Jiang Nan hesitated, looking upstairs with a slightly awkward expression. Though he didn’t say anything, his silence spoke volumes.
The director’s instincts kicked in. It was obvious: Jiang Nan was up and ready, while his brother was still asleep. A perfect contrast for the cameras.
“Does your brother always wake up this late?” the director asked, eyes gleaming with the potential drama.
“Um…” Jiang Nan hesitated.
“It’s okay; we’re just curious,” the director reassured him. “We’re shooting for a long time, so we need to know the routine.”
Jiang Nan nodded. “He usually gets up around 10. Be careful when you go up—he’s got a bad temper, especially when woken up.”
The key words—bad temper, grumpy in the morning—painted a clear picture.
…
Jiang Nan, captured by the camera, wore a white shirt and had soft, chestnut hair. His gentle voice matched his appearance. With his shy demeanor and charming peach blossom eyes, he instantly won over the hearts of the crew, especially the female choreographer.
“What an amazing big brother!” she thought. He was not only handsome but also kind.
The director, already impressed, made mental notes. Jiang Nan’s good-natured behavior contrasted sharply with the growing negative impression of Jiang Feng.
The commotion woke Jiang Yuan. He frowned, scanning the room for Jiang Feng. When he realized his son was missing, his temper flared. “Xiao Nan, where is Xiao Feng? It’s almost ten, and he’s still not up?!”
“Dad, you know my brother always wakes up late. His body clock’s set that way,” Jiang Nan replied helplessly. “Should I wake him up? He’s not thrilled about this show, and he was probably up late playing games again. I apologize for his behavior. I’m sorry to keep everyone waiting.”
The director’s impression of Jiang Feng worsened. “It’s not your fault. Don’t apologize. Let’s go get him.”
“Alright,” Jiang Nan agreed.
The crew marched to Jiang Feng’s bedroom. Jiang Nan knocked carefully, his demeanor humble and meek. “Xiao Feng, are you up? Everyone’s waiting for you.” His tone was soft, with a hint of sadness that tugged at the choreographer’s heartstrings.
“Maybe this child doesn’t feel at home,” she thought, wondering if Jiang Nan’s participation in the show was forced upon him by his troublesome younger brother.
Jiang Nan knocked a few more times without a response. “He might still be asleep. Should we just go in?” he suggested.
The director nodded. “Yes, we’re short on time. Go ahead.”
Jiang Nan silently hoped for a scene. He knew Jiang Feng’s temper—waking him up would surely set him off. If Jiang Feng lost his cool on camera, Jiang Nan’s image would only shine brighter in comparison. The thought made him almost giddy with anticipation.
…
The door creaked open, revealing a pitch-black room. A figure was curled up on the bed. As the noise grew, the lump under the covers shifted. The director quickly aimed the camera.
“Xiao Feng, wake up,” Jiang Nan called softly, flipping on the light. “It’s almost ten. The show crew is waiting.”
The sudden brightness stirred Jiang Feng. He opened his eyes, and when he saw Jiang Nan, his expression turned icy. “What are you doing in my room? Get out! Did I invite you in? This is my house!” he barked, his tone sharp and unforgiving, even in front of the camera.
Jiang Nan fought to suppress his anger and maintained a gentle smile. “Xiao Feng, I came to wake you up.”
The choreographer frowned, annoyed by Jiang Feng’s behavior. How could he be so rude when his big brother was so kind?
But then—
“You smile like the witch from that cartoon with the poisoned apple,” Jiang Feng sneered. “You and I don’t get along, so stop pretending to be some caring big brother. I told you—I don’t like you hovering around me.”
Jiang Nan’s smile stiffened.
Jiang Feng’s blunt words hit hard, and although his outburst painted him as hot-tempered, his sharp remarks made Jiang Nan’s composed behavior seem calculated.
In that instant, doubts began to creep into the minds of everyone present. If Jiang Nan knew his brother disliked him, why would he come in anyway? Was it just to provoke him?
The room fell silent, the atmosphere thick with tension and suspicion.
