Chapter 151: Empire Valkyrie
After two days of rest, the morale within the Resistance Army was high, with everyone itching to attack.
On the other hand, the garrison inside the city grew more and more restless, with rumors spreading wildly.
Ebrusus was far from idle, as he was busy catching people, arresting over a hundred in just three days.
As heads rolled, it finally intimidated those with other motives.
In addition, Ebrusus conducted a probing raid during the Double Rest of the western region's people.
Unfortunately, it didn't achieve much, as the tunnel used for the raid was actually dug by the Singleton Family, and Wild had informed Ireya of its existence early on.
Miss Rabbit had a batch of firewood and pine resin stored nearby. As soon as the raiders emerged, they were immediately repelled by the nearby troops on guard, and then a fire was ignited, with burning firewood and pine resin thrown into the tunnel.
They also used bellows to constantly blow air inside, directing smoke towards the enemy in the tunnel.
Ultimately, Ebrusus' raid failed, losing nearly three hundred men instead.
In short, Ebrusus had done everything he could, but he wasn't confident about defending Prosperous Point.
After all, the army outside the city was renowned and had just defeated Solomon, forcing those Wing Tribe people to flee back to Lion Heart Castle, and they even had a dragon.
However, Ebrusus' family was in Lion Heart Castle, and he didn't have wings, so he couldn't run as fast as the Wing Tribe people. Not wanting to lose his wife and children, he had no choice but to stubbornly defend Prosperous Point.
But not everyone was willing to play the sacrificial pawn like Ebrusus, buying time for the Wing Tribe people.
Take Tanison, for example. Since visiting Ebrusus that day, he had been acting very quietly, not because he changed sides, but to get Ebrusus to relax his guard on him.
Sure enough, Ebrusus noticed he hadn't been associating with those restless folks and called him to the mansion again last night.
He asked him to lead a hundred warriors to stay on the east gate tower tomorrow morning, as Ebrusus planned to send people out of the city to engage the enemy, but they were merely bait.
They would soon pretend to be defeated and retreat into the city.
However, Ebrusus would require those controlling the drawbridge to delay raising it, allowing some people into the city before suddenly lowering the portcullis to block their path.
At the same time, the drawbridge would be raised, trapping the enemies in the protruding corridor, then it would be Tanison and those hundred warriors' turn.
They could attack from above through the murder holes in the tower, leisurely shooting the enemies below, or pour hot oil or lime water down.
This is a classic strategy often used by defenders on the Bratis Continent, with success hinging mainly on the timing of lowering the portcullis and raising the drawbridge.
Ebrusus planned to send his trusted subordinates to carry out the task, while the offensive from the tower would be relatively simpler and less prone to error, so he entrusted it to Tanison.
Of course, he knew Tanison wasn't that reliable, but he had no choice since the rest of the city was in turmoil, with many people unreliable, Tanison, being a relative, was at least somewhat dependable.
At dawn, Ebrusus held a brief pre-battle meeting, assigning and arranging everyone's tasks.
Before long, the enemy army outside launched the first wave of attack.
Ebrusus hurriedly climbed the city wall, first looking for the White Dragon and feeling slightly relieved when he didn't see it.
Ireya actually wanted to bring out the dragon, but since it wasn't a dog, it couldn't be summoned at will.
When Li Yu was around, the dragon was quite obedient, but after Li Yu left for a month, with no one to manage the White Queen, she went wild and disappeared for days.
This time, although called by Li Yu to help with the battle, she probably got bored staying in the military camp over the weekend, so as soon as Li Yu left, she slipped away too.
Much like a seasoned office worker leaving early when the boss is away, who knows where she went this time.
The Lady couldn't have thirty thousand people waiting idly, but luckily the other side didn't have a dragon either, so she issued the order to attack.
As previously discussed, they made an aggressive stance on the east gate. She even rode the Sun King to the front line to supervise the battle firsthand and raised the rabbit flag of the Arias Family.
Ebrusus, seeing this, didn't dare let his guard down and commanded the defense from the city wall, engaging in a tug-of-war. Suddenly, the drawbridge at Prosperous Point was lowered, and cavalry charged from inside the city.
The cavalry, like a sharp blade, unexpectedly sliced into the flank of the Resistance Army.
Though they planned to feign defeat, they aimed to kill more enemies first;
the cavalry didn't disappoint Ebrusus; they quickly destroyed a siege tower and then moved towards another nearby siege tower.
But Ebrusus couldn't be happy for long, as a cavalry force from the Resistance Army charged their way as well.
The cavalry arrived just in time, moving as soon as the city cavalry began their sneak attack.
Ebrusus stared wide-eyed; was this just a coincidence? Did that cavalry happen to be patrolling nearby and intercept them just right?
Otherwise, how to explain their swift response, as if they were waiting for the troops from the city?
Ebrusus wasn't wrong; fearing sabotage by the Wing Tribe, Ireya hadn't sent drones into the city but had them hover outside for surveillance along the city walls.
Thus spotting the ambush cavalry near the gate early on, Ireya summoned a cavalry unit via a wireless radio once the city troops emerged.
The Lady increasingly found the wireless radio handy; although not visually astounding like the Italian Cannon or the Three-eyed Divine Bird, it was very practical.
In past battles on Bratis Continent, relaying orders required dispatch riders, wasting much time back and forth, while opportunities were fleeting.
And once fighting began, locating someone wasn't easy.
Thus the command in warfare wasn't as detailed, plus large Lords' forces were diverse, comprising different families or mercenaries, often resulting in chaotic clashes.
Mostly, tasks were assigned before the battle. Only Miss Rabbit, leveraging the Double Rest Sect's power, achieved micro-control on the battlefield. In some sense, her Empire Valkyrie's title was no exaggeration.
