Chapter 152: Anticipating the Enemy's Moves
Miss Rabbit gave Ebrusus a lesson on the spot; on one side, the city's guards dispatched cavalry to attack and destroy the siege tower, while on the other side, the Lady calmly directed the cavalry that came in to cut off the retreat of those men.
Ebrusus, seeing this, hurriedly ordered the retreat trumpet to be blown.
However, the Knight leading that team of cavalry out did not know he had been targeted, and seeing the second siege tower right in front of him, he was reluctant to just retreat like that.
Moreover, he still remembered the orders given by Ebrusus; the feigned defeat had to be convincing, or if they suddenly retreated back into the city without clashing with anyone, the pursuers would surely become suspicious, and the plan would fail, wouldn't it?
So he lingered a bit longer, set fire to the siege tower, and only then prepared to retreat.
But just as he delayed for that moment, the Resistance Army's cavalry had already cut off their retreat.
Ebrusus was anxious on the city wall but had no solution; unlike the Lady, who had ways to contact the troops outside the city, he could only watch helplessly as they were surrounded.
Ebrusus's heart was bleeding; that was a full four hundred cavalrymen out there, and he had only seven hundred cavalry in total.
He still held a glimmer of hope, hoping his cavalry could break through the enemy encirclement and return to the city.
Yet the troops deployed by Ireya were also elite Resistance Army forces, led by Ferdinand.
As soon as the fight started, Ebrusus felt the pressure; they were almost entirely suppressed by the opponents in weaponry, battle experience, and prowess.
Moreover, transitioning from attackers to being attacked decreased their morale. Once they lost momentum during the charge, their horses would naturally slow down, resulting in getting struck down by the approaching enemies.
Ebrusus watched helplessly as in one engagement, nearly thirty percent of his men fell, and the remaining ones were surrounded, forced to dismount and fight on foot.
Contrarily, though the opponents also suffered casualties, compared to them, it was negligible.
Ebrusus's eyes turned red, his face showing various expressions before he gritted his teeth and pulled a Noble beside him, "Iban, I entrust two thousand men to you; go and get Kureed back for me."
The noble named Iban was taken aback for a moment but soon agreed.
"Yes, Lord, I will head out immediately."
The odd movements within the city did not escape the eyes of the drone in the sky; the Lady looked at the screen on the controller, somewhat surprised.
"Ebrusus actually hasn't raised the drawbridge; he's planning to send out another force, does he think he can continue to feign defeat to deceive us?"
Beside her, Duren said, "It doesn't seem like it; he should know that once those thousand men leave the city, few can ever return, and even if they feign defeat, they can only lure a few hundred of us into the city, not a worthwhile trade."
"What on earth is Ebrusus thinking?" The Lady scratched her head, "Does he think he's not losing fast enough?"
Duren thought for a moment and said, "There's only one explanation; there might be someone Ebrusus cares about among that cavalry."
"Is that so?" Miss Rabbit put down the controller, then picked up the binoculars hanging from her waist and looked towards the battlefield.
Finding the commander of the cavalry among the crowd, she stroked her chin and said, "Do you think that person resembles Ebrusus a bit? But I heard these defected Nobles sent their families to Lion Heart Castle as hostages."
"Illegitimate child," Duren softly uttered three words, then added.
"If Ebrusus can't hold Prosperous Point, his family may be killed by those Wing Tribe people. No wonder he wants to protect his illegitimate child now."
The Lady, hearing this, realized, snapped her fingers, and said into the radio, "Ferdinand, capture him alive."
Ebrusus had already felt the terror of the Empire Valkyrie; the girl named Ireya seemed to be able to anticipate his every move.
He just made up his mind to have Iban gather a thousand men to leave the city and rescue the trapped cavalry outside.
But on the other side, more troops were deployed to stop those thousand men, and both sides soon fell into a chaotic battle. Iban was anxious to help Kureed and others, but he couldn't move an inch and soon found himself with no chance of escape.
And Ebrusus behaved like a gambler who was frantic about losing; he with red eyes, gathered three thousand men, his gaze swept around, finally stopping on Tanison.
He opened his mouth, "Do me a favor and bring Kureed back..."
However, his words were cut off by a terrifying roar as if a sudden thunderstorm sounded next to his ears. Ebrusus looked at the sky but saw no dark clouds.
Instead, the ground beneath trembled, and soon he heard exclamations coming from the south of the city.
Followed by a chorus of screams, "The wall has collapsed, the wall has collapsed!"
Ebrusus instinctively glanced toward the city wall but saw no signs of collapse. Quickly, he realized the problem wasn't with the wall in front of him.
Ebrusus couldn't worry about rescuing his illegitimate child anymore; he swiftly headed for the south of the city with his men.
Watching him hastily leave, Tanison's gaze was complex, murmuring, "Don't blame me, we can't hold Prosperous Point anymore; we can't all die with you."
After speaking, he called his confidant and had him notify other allies in the city, instructing them to bring their guards to the east gate.
Tanison then led these few hundred men to take over the gate; he personally went out of the city to surrender to Ireya.
Miss Rabbit didn't expect that after just gaining the south, they could actually capture this gate too.
But to guard against Tanison playing tricks, she only sent two hundred men to enter the towers on either side of the gate, very smoothly taking control of the gate.
Then the Lady led the army into the city, encountering some resistance during the entry, but none was too intense.
Because Ebrusus had already led his trusted followers toward the south of the city, and with the cooperation of Tanison and others, who had clearly explained the defense layout inside the city.
Including who could be persuaded to surrender and who was more stubborn. With the help of these "insiders," Ireya pushed forward, not only clearing out most of the city's enemy forces but also gaining thousands of Allies while fighting.
Ultimately, Ebrusus was found still struggling in the south of the city, under that broken wall filled with corpses.
Upon seeing Ireya, Ebrusus knew the game was over, yet he did not surrender and still wanted to resist until the Lady had Kureed brought over.
