Chapter 124: Chapter 124: Performance
Seeing the burnt gash on his shoulder, Tony broke out in a cold sweat.
The scorching light beam released by the Destroyer was truly terrifying. If it had struck more accurately, his body would have simply vanished in that beam.
This realization left Tony feeling deflated. The Iron Man suit was the pinnacle of his technology—the most advanced product he could create.
Yet such an achievement was still woefully inadequate against alien weaponry.
"Marcus's armor seems incredibly powerful. Maybe I can get some answers from him. And that vibranium alloy my father left behind—I need to incorporate it into the suit as soon as possible!"
Recognizing that his armor was useless against the Destroyer, Tony stopped trying to engage the massive construct.
Instead, he flew over the town, using himself as a signal booster to connect with every communication device in the area.
"Attention everyone in town! This is Tony Stark. Yes, that Tony Stark. An autonomous military robot has gone rogue on the east side of town. For your safety, evacuate immediately through the western exit."
His voice echoed throughout the town, broadcasting from every device capable of receiving and transmitting sound.
The warnings blared from all directions. Combined with the constant explosions from the eastern edge of town, this prompted residents to scramble into their vehicles and flee.
After ensuring Jane and the others reached safety, Thor hurried toward the Destroyer. He knew his brother Loki's target was him alone.
Loki, in his hunger for the throne, absolutely did not want Thor to return to Asgard. As long as Thor remained exiled, Loki would have no reason to harm innocent bystanders.
Now Thor finally understood his father's wisdom. Someone who only knew conquest and destruction could never be a good king.
Perhaps Loki could make a worthy king. While Thor would remain on Earth, he was... never going back.
"Loki..." Thor called out to the Destroyer from the middle of the street.
This stopped Marcus, who was controlling the Destroyer. His goal was to help Thor complete his transformation, not destroy him.
Besides, Thor's father was watching from the mirror dimension. If he accidentally killed the prince, Odin might unleash his fury.
The Destroyer stood silent, as if Loki was listening.
"If you want the throne, then from this day forward, you are the heir to Asgard. I surrender everything you desire!
Just... please stop. Stop destroying this place!"
Upon hearing these words, Odin, still observing from the mirror dimension, nodded with satisfaction. Thor's transformation pleased him greatly.
This Thor was no longer the savage warrior who swung his hammer recklessly. He now possessed the kindness and compassion befitting a king.
But this wasn't enough. As Asgard's king, beyond kindness and compassion, Thor needed the determination to protect his people.
"I will add a swift ship from Asgard to our deal. I want Thor to reclaim Mjolnir himself."
Odin's voice traveled through the mirror dimension to the Destroyer, allowing Marcus to hear him clearly.
An Asgardian swift ship?
Though Marcus had never seen one, he could guess its appearance from the attire of Sif and the Warriors Three.
He imagined a winged boat sailing boldly through the sky.
"I like your style!"
Marcus smiled. He raised the Destroyer's hand and aimed at Thor, rapidly condensing yellow energy.
"Everyone together—stop the Destroyer!"
Seeing the Destroyer's action, Volstagg shouted, hurling his shield like a discus toward the construct's arm.
Hogun and Fandral didn't hesitate, rushing toward the Destroyer with weapons raised, attempting to interrupt its attack.
CLANG! CLANG!
With metallic impacts, the Destroyer's arm was deflected—Marcus intentionally allowing it—and the blast of scorching energy shot past Thor's body.
But they all overlooked one crucial detail. Though the beam missed Thor, it struck a car not far behind him.
The vehicle exploded instantly under the energy beam's impact. The blast knocked Thor backward, slamming him violently into a wall.
Such a blow might be nothing to an Asgardian, but to Thor in his mortal form, it caused serious injury.
Bleeding from his head, Thor struggled to his feet. He stumbled toward the Destroyer.
"Listen... Loki, I can satisfy whatever demands you have, but... if you continue this path, Asgard... will perish by your hand!"
He didn't want his brother to become a tyrant. His voice grew firmer with each step toward the Destroyer.
At the temporary research base several miles east of town, the hammer that had remained motionless suddenly began to vibrate violently.
"Coulson, something's happening with the hammer!"
Clint, with his exceptional eyesight, noticed the anomaly instantly. While readying his bow, he contacted Coulson through his communicator.
He wondered what could possibly move the hammer that no one had been able to budge.
Coulson, leading a team driving toward town, frowned upon hearing Clint's report.
How were all these events connected?
"Stay on high alert. I need to investigate the situation in town first!"
The hammer had exhibited strange behavior before, with its electromagnetic waves even bringing rain to New Mexico. Previously, Coulson might have turned back immediately.
But now, the situation had changed. The explosions from town were highly unusual, and reports from agents indicated extraordinary forces at work there.
Much like Stark's Iron Man suit, something was unleashing beams of tremendous destructive power.
Just as he finished speaking, another message came from Clint.
"I have some bad news—the hammer just flew into the sky!"
Flew into the sky? The hammer no one could lift?
Coulson was stunned. The news was too shocking.
While he processed this information, a roar sounded overhead. Leaning out the car window, Coulson clearly saw a ball of lightning shooting toward town.
"Drive faster!"
He had already guessed what the lightning bolt was—the hammer taking flight.
Between the reports from town and the violent vibrations, someone must have gained control of the hammer.
Back in town, Thor raised his arms skyward. The heavens darkened as storm clouds gathered, lightning crackling among them.
RUMBLE...
With a tremendous roar, a ball of lightning descended from the sky. Thor was enveloped in countless bolts of electricity as his armor materialized, fitting perfectly to his body.
