Chapter 7: Unlucky Peter, In Stark Contrast
"Today is really my unlucky day." Peter murmured as he headed to Dr. Connors' experiment, his head downcast. This morning, because Peter was late again, Betty thought he didn't care about her at all, leading to a separation. "Oh, Norton will probably laugh at me if he finds out," Peter lamented, telling his close friend Norton about it over the phone.
Dr. Connors was seated, observing data on the computer. Noticing Peter's arrival and his lack of energy, he asked with concern, "What's wrong, Peter? Who made you like this?" "It's just a trivial matter, Dr. Connors," Peter replied, obviously not wanting to share details. He picked up the notebook on the laboratory table and walked out the door: "See you later, Dr. Connors." "See you later," Connors replied, knowing where Peter was headed. Peter had connections with Dr. Otto, working as Connors' assistant from Wednesday to Friday and as Otto's assistant from Sunday to Tuesday.
Then, Connors turned back to the screen in front of him. All the experiments had been carried out, but there were still two last experiments—human trials. There should have been enough time, but Osborn Industries was pressing. If results were not produced, years of hard work would be in vain. "I will succeed, definitely!" Connors declared firmly, looking at the white mice in the training room.
"Sorry Dr. Otto, I'm late," Peter hurriedly said as he entered Otto's laboratory, a piece of toast dangling from his mouth. "Peter, you're here," Otto responded, sitting dejectedly without looking at the prosthetic limb in front of him. "What's the matter, Dr. Otto?" Peter asked with concern. Otto took a deep breath and explained, "The board of directors at Osborn has collectively decided to stop my experiment." Upon hearing this, Peter felt indignant for Otto: "They can't do this. Dr. Otto has worked so hard for so long; how can they just stop?" Peter turned around, intending to leave.
Otto, knowing what Peter had in mind, immediately stopped him: "Peter! Don't go." Peter wanted to find Harry or even Norman to resolve the issue, but he was naïve. In such a large company, Norman wasn't the only one with the final say. If the board of directors disagreed, Norman's agreement would be useless, let alone Harry, who was only Norman's son. "But Dr. Otto, we can't sit idly by," Peter insisted. Otto, however, was not as fragile as Peter thought. "No, no, Peter, who said we have to sit back and watch?" Otto slowly stood up, turned his head to look at Peter, and with a hint of madness in his eyes, asked, "Peter, are you ready to give it a go?"
Seeing that Otto was not depressed, Peter laughed. "Yes, Dr. Otto." On the other side, Norton and Gwen were not as busy as Peter. Even Gwen's band training was at school, and they had Betty and Mary Jane in their band, which was quite intentional. Norton and Gwen went to a secret place and took off their coats. Before they arrived, they had already found a public toilet to wear their battle suits underneath, so they only needed to remove their coats.
"Woohoo!!" Norton exclaimed even more excitedly as he started roaming around the city with Gwen. During their adventure, they encountered several robberies, and they successfully subdued the gangsters, leaving behind the names of Ghost Spider and Black Spider. However, Norton secretly hoped that DC's Black Spider wouldn't ask for a copyright fee.
Later, they landed on the glass of a building. Standing on the reflective surface, they were quite satisfied with their appearances. Norton was delighted to see Gwen's current look. The tight battle suit outlined Gwen's beautiful figure perfectly, as did the suit outlining Norton's strong physique.
"How do you feel, Gwen?" Norton asked the little white spider beside him.
"This feels so cool!!" Gwen exclaimed excitedly. She danced on the glass, then acknowledged Norton's presence, ran to him, and made a gentleman's salute. She stretched out her hand and, with a low voice, laughed and said, "Handsome man, would you like to dance with me?"
Norton, the little black spider, rolled his eyes. Although he felt he should have initiated it, he was happy as long as Gwen was happy. He placed his hand on Gwen's palm and replied, "Definitely, beautiful lady." They then waltzed on the building's glass. Norton danced the girl's part. Though he wore a mask, he still felt a sense of shame, but it gradually dissipated with Gwen's joyful laughter.
Inside the building beneath their feet was a restaurant. The people there watched the two waltzing outside the window and assumed it was a restaurant program, so they all gave positive reviews. The restaurant band was quite sensible and played the music of a waltz, even though Norton and Gwen couldn't hear it.
"Norton, this is my happiest day," Gwen said, embracing Norton. "It's mine too, Gwen," he replied.
