Chapter 6: The Cabin
Julian's call to Marcus went straight to voicemail. He tried again, but there was no answer.
Panic began to set in. What if Marcus wasn't available? What if they had to find another place to hide?
But then, just as Julian was starting to lose hope, Marcus called back.
"Hey, man, what's going on?" Marcus asked, sounding groggy.
Julian took a deep breath, trying to summarize the situation. "It's Sophia's past," he said. "It's catching up with us. I need to get the kids to a safe place."
There was a pause on the other end of the line. "You can bring them to the cabin," Marcus said finally. "But be careful, Julian. If someone's after you, they won't hesitate to hurt anyone who gets in their way."
Julian nodded, even though Marcus couldn't see him. "I will," he promised. "Thanks, Marcus."
As he hung up the phone, Julian felt a sense of relief wash over him. They had a place to go, a place to hide.
But as he glanced in the rearview mirror, he saw the children looking back at him, their eyes wide with fear.
As they drove up to the cabin, Julian felt a sense of relief wash over him. They were finally safe.
The cabin was secluded, surrounded by trees and a babbling brook. Julian could see why Marcus loved it here.
He helped the children out of the car and led them inside. The cabin was cozy, with a fireplace and a kitchenette.
As they settled in, Julian tried to reassure the children that they were safe. But he could see the fear in their eyes.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Julian's heart skipped a beat. Who could it be?
He cautiously approached the door, looking through the peephole. It was Marcus.
Julian let out a sigh of relief and opened the door. Marcus walked in, looking serious.
"What's going on, Julian?" he asked. "You said something about Sophia's past?"
Julian nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation. Where did he even begin?
Julian took a deep breath, trying to summarize the situation. "Sophia was involved with some bad people," he said. "I don't know all the details, but I know it's serious."
Marcus's expression turned grave. "What kind of bad people?" he asked.
Julian hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But Marcus was his friend, and he trusted him.
"I don't know for sure," Julian said. "But I think it might have something to do with organized crime."
Marcus's eyes widened. "Whoa, that's heavy," he said. "Do you think they're after you and the kids?"
Julian nodded. "I do. That's why we're here. I need to keep them safe."
Marcus nodded, his expression determined. "You're safe here," he said. "I'll do everything I can to help."
Julian felt a sense of gratitude towards Marcus. He knew he could count on him.
But just as they were starting to feel safe, Julian heard a strange noise outside. It sounded like footsteps, crunching through the underbrush
Julian's heart skipped a beat. "What was that?" he whispered to Marcus.
Marcus's expression turned serious. "I don't know," he said. "But I'm going to go check it out."
Julian nodded, feeling a sense of unease. He watched as Marcus carefully made his way to the door, his eyes scanning the surrounding area.
As Marcus stepped outside, Julian heard the sound of footsteps again, this time louder. His heart racing, Julian grabbed the children and pulled them close.
"Shh," he whispered. "Everything is going to be okay."
But as he looked out the window, Julian saw a figure emerging from the trees. A figure he didn't recognize.
The figure stepped closer, its features becoming clearer. Julian's heart sank as he realized it was a woman, dressed in a black coat and hat.
"Who are you?" Julian demanded, trying to keep his voice steady.
The woman didn't respond. Instead, she reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a photograph.
Julian's eyes widened as he saw the image. It was a picture of Sophia, taken when she was still alive.
"What do you want?" Julian growled, feeling a sense of unease.
The woman finally spoke, her voice low and menacing. "We want the children," she said.
Julian's heart skipped a beat. Who was this woman, and what did she want with his children?
Julian's instincts kicked in, and he stepped forward, shielding the children from the woman.
"I don't think so," Julian said, his voice firm.
The woman sneered, her eyes glinting with malice. "You don't understand," she said. "Those children are very valuable to us."
Julian's grip on the children tightened. "I won't let you take them," he said.
The woman laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. "We'll see about that," she said.
Suddenly, Marcus appeared behind the woman, his eyes blazing with anger.
"Get out of here," Marcus growled, his voice low and menacing.
The woman spun around, her eyes narrowing. "And who are you supposed to be?" she sneered.
Marcus stepped forward, his fists clenched. "I'm someone who won't let you hurt these children," he said.
The woman's expression changed, her eyes flicking to the side. Julian followed her gaze and saw a black SUV pulling up behind her.
