Chapter 7: The Escape
The black SUV screeched to a halt behind the woman, and two men in suits jumped out. Julian's heart sank as he realized they were outnumbered.
Marcus stepped forward, his eyes locked on the woman. "We're not going to let you take the children," he growled.
The woman sneered, but Julian could see a flicker of uncertainty in her eyes. She nodded to the men, who moved forward, their hands resting on their guns.
Julian knew they had to act fast. He grabbed the children's hands and made a run for the cabin door.
"Marcus, come on!" Julian yelled, as they burst through the door.
Marcus was right behind them, slamming the door shut just as the men were about to follow.
Julian locked the door and leaned against it, panting. "We have to get out of here," he said.
Marcus nodded. "I have a plan," he said. "Follow me."
Marcus led them through the cabin, dodging furniture and leaping over obstacles. They burst through the back door, slamming it shut behind them.
Julian looked around frantically, taking in their surroundings. They were in a small clearing, surrounded by dense forest.
"We need to get out of here, now," Marcus yelled, grabbing Julian's arm and pulling him forward.
Julian didn't need to be told twice. He grabbed the children's hands, and they set off at a sprint, racing through the forest.
As they ran, Julian could hear the sounds of their pursuers, crashing through the underbrush behind them. He didn't dare look back, fearing what he might see.
Suddenly, Marcus veered off the path, leading them through a narrow opening in the trees. Julian followed, his heart pounding in his chest.
They emerged into a small clearing, where a rusty old truck was parked. Marcus yanked open the door, gesturing for them to get in.
Julian didn't hesitate. He bundled the children into the truck, then leapt in beside them. Marcus gunned the engine, and they sped off, leaving their pursuers in the dust.
For a few moments, they drove in silence, the only sound the roar of the engine. Then, Julian turned to Marcus, his eyes searching for answers.
"Where are we going?" Julian asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Marcus's expression was grim. "Somewhere safe," he said. "But we need to keep moving. They'll be looking for us."
Julian nodded, his mind racing with questions. Who were these people? And what did they want with his children?
As they sped through the forest, Julian knew one thing for sure: he would do whatever it took to keep his children safe.
