Chapter 83
"At least how many cars are coming?"
"I sensed more than 20 cars coming, but there are more oncoming, but they weren't in my range yet," Derek said.
Derek had been training his wind ability to be able to use it for detection. He wasn't that proficient yet, but at least he could use his abilities to detect moving things, especially large objects within 1 kilometer.
"I see. Monitor them first and also check the movements of the zombies. Let the others prepare; we might also need to leave immediately," Treyton said seriously.
With the numbers of oncoming cars, it would be impossible not to be chased by zombies. They'll also attract more zombies after them.
If they were really going to pass by where they were, then the zombies will certainly target them as well. It's okay if there were only a few, but if it's a group of zombies attracted by such numbers of cars, then there would certainly be a lot.
The place where they were currently wasn't really that good for a battle because the space isn't wide enough for all of them to fight properly.
"Tsk. We haven't even had our lunch yet," Luciel said with a very dissatisfied tone.
"We're not yet sure if they were really going to pass by here. If they're really going to stop here, then you can still eat your lunch in the car later," Treyton replied.
"No, need. It's hard eating cooked meals in the car. I'll just eat some of my snacks if we really need to move out immediately," Luciel said, even though he was still dissatisfied.
They hurriedly let Theo gather more supplies that they might need, and then they all went to where everyone was.
The others already packed most of the things they brought out a while ago. They were all ready to depart as soon as they're in a bad situation.
"How's the situation, Derek?"
"Boss, I sensed at least 50 cars coming. They should be visible soon," Derek said and then looked at the highway.
After they heard what Derek said, they all looked at the highway to see the oncoming cars.
They waited for a while, and then they finally saw some cars coming from the distance.
"Huh? Doesn't those look like army cars?" Nathan said while trying to look at the cars, which were still very far from them.
"Let's wait and see. If they're really from the army, then the situation might be better," Treyton said.
When the cars were nearer, they could clearly see that the cars in front were army cars.
"If they're from the army, then we are probably going in the same direction. Get ready; we are going to go with them after confirming who they are," Treyton said.
All of them went to their cars after Theo put all the things they packed in his space. It is indeed better for them to go with those coming people than to be left behind, especially if they were indeed the army.
If they're from the army base that Treyton wanted to go to, then it's a better choice to travel with them than to be left behind to deal with the zombies that they had attracted.
The shop they stopped at was just at the side of the highway, so they waited for the cars to arrive.
The first army car that seemed to be responsible for checking out the situation stopped in front of their cars.
"Hello, where are you guys going? It's better to leave right now because even though we are killing most of the zombies that are following us, there are still a lot of them," one of the soldiers said while looking at them through the window.
"We are planning to go to the army base in the next town; are you guys from there?" Treyton asked.
"Yes, we are from there. If you are going to the base, then you guys better follow us," the soldier said.
"Ok, thanks; we will follow you guys behind," Treyton said.
So, all of them waited for a while and followed the cars at the back.
The army was obviously on its rescue mission because they had a lot of army trucks and a lot of civilian cars following them.
Because they became part of a big group again, their movement speed was limited again. Treyton already said that they might be able to arrive at the base this evening, but because of their speed, they weren't able to move at a fast speed.
In the evening, all of them stopped at a clearing to rest.
The people with the army were obviously normal civilians. Most of those that disembarked don't have a good complexion.
The army started distributing food to the people with them. The soldier who talked with them also approached them and tried giving them bread and water.
"Thank you, but no need; we still have a lot of food with us you can give it to others," Treyton said.
"I see. That's good," the soldier said and went to give the food that was supposed to be theirs to other people.
Nina and the others brought the things they packed during lunchtime to be their evening meal.
When Nina and the others brought out their meals, the people around them were all looking at them enviously.
He could clearly hear what they were saying, and most of them were expressing their jealousy and dissatisfaction.
"They should have a lot of people with superpowers among them."
"Look at how good their food is; why can't the army even provide something like that?"
"It seemed that they are powerful people; why don't they help people like us? They should share what they have with others."
"Why don't we try asking for some of their food? It's really unbearable eating biscuits only."
Even though Luciel heard a lot of such whispers, he didn't pay attention to them and just started eating immediately as soon as Nina brought their meals to them.
The others also seemed to hear what the people were whispering about; that's why some people still paused from eating their meals before continuing to eat without doing anything after looking at Treyton and Luciel, who didn't care about anything.
Luciel already noticed that most of the people the army had rescued were useless people. Most of the people rescued by the army seemed to be the people who didn't even dare to leave their houses, even though a lot of time had already passed since the start of the apocalypse.
In the afternoon, when they waited for the cars to pass by them so that they could cut in line near the end to join the army, he heard a lot of people complaining.
He heard a lot of them complaining about how the army took a lot of time to rescue them and how the army wasn't dealing with the zombies properly.
They were complaining about a lot of things as if they had a lot of rights to do so. They were all pouring their dissatisfaction on the army, who were already escorting them to the base, and they even had a lot of demands they wanted to be fulfilled.
The soldiers who were tasked to rescue such people were really unlucky. They were already rescuing the people, but they still have to hear a lot of nonsense while trying hard to deal with the zombies going after them.
If it were him, he would just abandon such people who only knew how to complain but weren't even able to do anything themselves.
The army was already kind enough to escort them and even give them some food, but they didn't even know how to be grateful.
So, he really thinks that that army rescuing such useless people is a bad move and just a waste of resources.
The people that they should be rescuing should at least be the people who had at least some courage or those who at least know how to just stay quiet rather than just complaining.
Unfortunately, the army was still bound to their duty and was responsible for rescuing everyone, so even useless people like them were still rescued.
It's really unfair to those soldiers who were sacrificed for protecting such dregs and to those that were trying hard to reach some safe place on their own.
Well, the world is generally unfair, so there's nothing they could do about it.
Anyway, such dregs won't survive for long if they go in a base if they don't start looking for a way to become at least a bit useful.
However, it is still annoying to hear their complaints for a long time.
He had already eaten half of the food on his plate, but the whispers around them kept getting louder and louder.
"They're getting annoying," Luciel said.
When he said that, Treyton looked at Yang and Zam. Both of them also understood, so they went to let the people around them go away.
