Chapter 59: On the road again after the rain
"I think the result would be better if you prayed for me instead," Treyton answered.
"Sorry, but I don't really believe in gods. So, I can't pray for you," Lucie answered back.
He really didn't believe that gods existed; if it's the existence of devils, he might have believed it more.
If there were really gods, then he wouldn't have been transmigrated into another apocalypse when he had already experienced enough of it in his past life.
If it was the existence of devils, then he might have believed it more because he already experienced a lot of hellish things, so it would be easier for him to believe that they actually exist.
"I also don't believe in such things as gods, so it seemed that we are really compatible with each other," Treyton said with a chuckle.
"I see," Luciel nonchalantly replied without taking what Treyton said seriously.
"Brother, what are gods?" Ashlee asked while looking at them curiously.
Luciel, who was asked by Ashlee, couldn't help but look at Yang.
It seemed that Yang also wasn't a religious person. If he was, even though Ashlee was only 6 years old, she should have an idea about gods. However, it seemed that Ashlee really didn't have any idea about it.
Luciel really doesn't want to answer such a question because explaining about gods, religions, and others was difficult because of a lot of things involved in them.
But looking at Ashlee, who was waiting for his answer, he still tried to give a general definition about gods.
"Gods are very powerful beings that a lot of people worship and believe in," Luciel answered briefly.
"Powerful? Like Superheroes?"
"No, they should be more powerful than superheroes, and they aren't humans; you can't see them either," Luciel answered again.
"Then, how do people know about them? Why do they believe them if they can't be seen?" Ashlee asked again in a very puzzled voice.
The questions Ashlee asked really weren't questions a normal 6-year-old child would ask. Her comprehension, together with his curiosity, was really good.
"I also don't know how people know about them. But people believe them because they are teaching people how to be good people and to be saved," Luciel answered briefly.
He really doesn't know how people knew about them, but they say that those people with a lot of faith could feel the presence of the gods they were worshiping. As an unbeliever, he certainly doesn't know if they were true or not.
There were a lot of religions in the world and were worshipping different gods. However, they generally worship gods for salvation or for other things like looking for their purpose in life.
Even though he doesn't believe in the existence of gods, he still knew that those religions that were worshiping gods were basically teaching morals to people for them to become good people.
That's why, in the course of history, a lot of powerful people were seen to be using religion to bind people to their cause.
The belief in gods is just one aspect of how human society was formed. Social values, norms, disciplines, and others were formed because of the beliefs of people.
These things became shackles for humans, binding them to live in harmony with each other.
However, those shackles were getting undone because of the chaotic situation they were currently in.
In the face of their own survival, a lot of people would break their shackles and do a lot of things they were normally incapable of.
In fact, he actually thinks that it is still good for people to have something they believe in; it may be gods, people, or their own convictions. It's good for people to have them so that they won't lose hope in such hopeless situations.
However, he doesn't need to explain such things to Ashlee. Once she grows up, she will know such things eventually; whether she believes in gods or other things is her freedom.
She looked at Ashlee again, and it seemed that she wanted to ask another question, so he immediately said, "You will understand more about it later when you grow up."
Even though it seemed that Ashlee was still unsatisfied, she still nodded and didn't bother asking them questions again.
He also went back to browsing comics in his tab, looking for something new to read.
Treyton also didn't disturb him after that because he started experimenting on how to make his metal and lightning powers stronger.
"Brother, look, the zombies became uglier," Ashlee said again after a while.
Luciel stopped looking at his tab and looked outside just like Ashlee.
The zombies outside indeed looked uglier compared to what they looked like a week ago.
A week ago, most of the zombies they could see still had good flesh around them except for those that were nearly eaten or bitten before they turned into zombies.
However, most of the zombies they were seeing outside the window were bloated with different dark colors aside from the black veins they were showing.
Their bodies also seemed to have deteriorated faster. Luciel could see that their skins were already peeling away with different degrees of flesh to be seen.
But aside from being ugly, Luciel could see that almost all of them were moving faster than before.
The numbers of zombies chasing them also increased. It seemed that a lot of people really became zombies because of the water, so the number of zombies that were chasing them also increased significantly.
"Yes, they indeed looked uglier, but their numbers also increased, and they seemed to be faster than before," Luceil said.
After Treyton heard what he said, he also looked outside.
"This is troublesome; their increase in speed is very obvious, unlike before. It seemed that they were stronger than before," Treyton said with a frown while looking outside.
"Unlike before, they can't chase us this far, but now they are still running after us. How could they still run faster when they were obviously rotting already? This is really unscientific," Yang added.
It's really unscientific; how could corpses even move when their hearts weren't beating anymore?
And instead of slowing down because of decay, they were even getting stronger, which was very obvious because they were moving faster than before.
He only knew that they must have eaten people, which was why they got stronger, but he still doesn't understand the principle behind it.
Well, maybe it's actually not unscientific; it's just that they haven't found the right scientific principle behind it.
"There's no use in thinking about it for now. Zam, can we move faster? It's better to outrun those zombies that were chasing us; it's troublesome to have them chasing us while because they keep increasing while we move," Treyton said.
"I think we can outrun them after getting out of this town. They are still cleaning up the road, so this is already the fastest speed we could drive for a while," Zam answered while driving.
They were the first to drive out, but they waited for Myla and the others to drive in front of them.
For the other cars, they rearranged the people staying in their car.
Wes, Myla, Mia, Derek, Nate, and Calvin were in front of them. All of them had powers that were helpful in moving things. So, they were responsible for cleaning up the road.
Unlike before, the road they were taking was full of things that were blocking them because of the flood.
A lot of unorganized cars were in their way together with tree trunks, home appliances, and other things that were carried on the road because of the flood.
That's why Wes, Myla, Mia, Derek, Nate, and Calvin were tasked with moving them aside so that they could pass through.
With a lot of things blocking their way, they couldn't drive as fast as before, so they were still in the town.
The situation might be better after going out because, unlike the town they were in, the road they were taking was going uphill, unlike the very flat ground of the town they were currently in.
The town they were in was obviously flooded immediately, not just because of the continuous heavy rain but also because it was one of the lowest places in the area.
That's also why a lot of things were blocking the road they were taking because a lot of things from higher places also went down in the place, they were currently in.
Even some zombies from higher places should have been carried by the water, so aside from those people that transformed into zombies because of water, the number of zombies also increased because of those zombies that were carried by the water down to where they were.
So, it was indeed true that their pace should increase once they got out of the car.
"Then let's just travel at this pace for now. But tell them that once we are out of town, we need to increase our traveling pace," Treyton said, then he didn't pay attention to the zombies outside any longer and just continued on what he was doing.
