Chapter 45: 45. Danzo’s Warning
No one knew if it was the sight of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen's corpses that stirred the Jōnin present, but the moment Danzo finished speaking, they roared in unison, "Yes!"
Amid the deafening response, Mitokado Homura's face turned ashen. Still unwilling to concede, he muttered, "Danzo, replacing the commander requires the Hokage's written order…"
Before Homura could finish his sentence, Minato Namikaze appeared at his side, placing a hand lightly on his shoulder.
"Elder Homura, please don't make things difficult for your subordinates," Minato said calmly, his voice carrying an undeniable authority.
His movement was so fast that Homura didn't even have time to react, let alone dodge. Neither did his guards.
Danzo stepped forward and said, "I've already made it clear: I'll take full responsibility for all the consequences. As for the Hokage's orders, you can return to Konoha and ask Hiruzen for them yourself."
Leaning closer to Homura's ear, Danzo added in a low voice, "Don't make this harder for me, or you know what I'm capable of, Homura."
This was a blatant warning.
Homura's expression darkened, but he didn't dare retaliate.
No one knew Danzo better than Homura.
They had been classmates since they were six, teammates since they were nine, and comrades for decades.
Homura knew all too well just how ruthless Danzo could be. If Homura interfered with Danzo's plans and caused Konoha to lose this war, there was no doubt that Danzo would make him regret it.
Absolutely no doubt.
Feeling the weight of Danzo's determination, Homura reluctantly chose to back down.
"Shimura Danzo, I'll report all of this to Hiruzen. Just you wait!"
Throwing out a less-than-threatening threat, Homura finally stormed out with his guards.
Danzo didn't react at all.
It was better this way. He had plans to leave the camp soon to attack Kirigakure's port. If Homura stayed, Minato might not have been able to keep him under control.
"Minato, display the five corpses and six swords prominently in the camp," Danzo ordered.
"Yes," Minato replied without hesitation.
The previous defeats of Konoha's forces were partly due to the brutal tactics of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. These seven enjoyed torturing their enemies, and anyone captured by them faced agonizing torment.
As a result, they had instilled a deep psychological fear in Konoha's ninja.
Displaying their corpses and swords would undoubtedly boost morale significantly.
"Everyone else, prepare for battle. Fugaku and Hizashi, stay behind."
The others quickly dispersed, leaving only Uchiha Fugaku and Hyuga Hizashi standing in place, feeling uneasy about what Danzo might say.
Fugaku, especially, was nervous. It was no secret that Danzo took a hardline stance against the Uchiha clan. What if Danzo decided to sabotage him during the upcoming operations?
Breaking the tense silence, Danzo got straight to the point. "Time is short, so I'll be brief."
"I don't care about any grievances between your clans in the past. From now on, I expect you both to lead your respective clans in giving your all against Kirigakure."
Hearing this, both Uchiha Fugaku and Hyuga Hizashi fell silent.
As the two largest clans in Konoha, the Uchiha and Hyuga always harbored a sense of rivalry, which naturally extended to the battlefield.
This rivalry manifested in their unwillingness to cooperate, competing for credit, and focusing on preserving their own strength rather than the greater good.
Additionally, Mitokado Homura, influenced by the Second Hokage's biases, held little goodwill toward the Uchiha, often targeting them on the battlefield.
This led to widespread resentment among the Uchiha, who became reluctant to risk their lives in battle.
Danzo's current goal was to eliminate such concerns.
"As leaders of your respective clans, you must have noticed that this war has consumed many of the village's resources. After the war, numerous positions in Konoha will need to be filled," Danzo said with a calm yet steady tone, his raspy voice exuding authority.
"I can guarantee that after the war, those who perform outstandingly—whether they are from the Uchiha, the Hyuga, other ninja clans, or even civilians—will receive appropriate recognition and rewards."
His gaze then turned sharp.
"However, for those who refuse to follow orders, I have some vacancies in the Root."
The implication was clear, and both Fugaku and Hizashi immediately understood Danzo's meaning.
What was Root?
It was the most dangerous division in all of Konoha, filled with emotionless killing machines. Forget about completing missions—just surviving the training period would be a challenge for any young clan member sent there.
Realizing the stakes, Fugaku quickly declared, "As long as Lord Danzo ensures fairness for Uchiha ninja, we will fight under your command!"
Danzo glanced at Fugaku and corrected him, "You will fight for Konoha."
Fugaku straightened up and replied, "Yes, for Konoha."
Satisfied with Fugaku's response, Danzo turned to Hizashi. "And you?"
At this point, Hizashi, as a member of the Hyuga branch family, dared not offend such a powerful Konoha elder. He reluctantly agreed, "The Hyuga clan will also fight with all our strength for Konoha."
Danzo nodded approvingly. "Good. However, I have one more matter to address."
Hearing this, both Fugaku and Hizashi tensed up again, wondering what else Danzo might demand.
Danzo didn't keep them in suspense. "I will personally lead a mission to destroy Kirigakure's port along the coastline. While I'm gone, Minato will oversee all affairs. I expect the two of you to support him fully."
"What?!"
Both Fugaku and Hizashi frowned simultaneously.
While Danzo acting as their commander was naturally acceptable, Minato was another matter.
Though young and highly accomplished in the war, Minato's youth and relative inexperience made it hard for Fugaku and Hizashi to submit to his leadership.
Danzo, however, dismissed their concerns with a simple statement:
"Konoha has already suffered enough casualties in this war. I expect you to understand what's at stake. Anyone who dares obstruct Konoha's victory will be personally eliminated by me."
As he left the meeting room, Danzo added coldly, "No matter who it is."
Only after Danzo had completely left did the oppressive atmosphere, built from years of battle and power, finally dissipate.
It was then that Hizashi realized he had broken out in a cold sweat without even noticing.
Fugaku fared slightly better but was equally shaken.
"So this is the so-called darkness of the ninja world?"
The sheer aura, resolve, and uncompromising decisiveness Danzo displayed were qualities Fugaku, as the Uchiha clan leader, did not possess.
