Chapter 47 - It Had Been Destroyed
Black smoke stretched up into the sky.
Buildings shattered and collapsed.
The ground was torn apart and scattered debris, like bricks, lay everywhere.
In the middle of what seemed like a city ravaged by a massive airstrike, Anna was kneeling.
Side by side with Sora.
“I was wrong… I won’t do it again…”
Sora’s avatar bowed its head.
It was, without a doubt, a perfect dogeza.
“How did it come to this?”
The desolate city. I muttered to myself.
The EYEAI Minecraft server had been ruined.
For now, that was the best way to describe it.
***
How did the peaceful EYEAI Minecraft server meet its downfall?
To explain that, I would need to go back in time.
I was preparing to hunt the Wither.
[Can you really beat it on your own?]
Sora’s voice came through the headset speakers.
[The viewers are saying it’s an insanely tough monster. Are you sure you can handle it?]
“There’s no problem.”
I had beaten this monster even in Hardcore mode. And this time, I had better gear than before. Back then, I didn’t even use enchanted items to this extent.
The EYEAI server was running on ‘Normal’ difficulty.
So, no matter how much of a hidden boss the Wither was, I figured I could handle it easily.
[Aren’t you going to stream it? The viewers are asking to see.]
“But if I stream, it’ll split the audience.”
I replied.
Rion had mentioned that it was best not to overlap with my generation mates’ streaming schedules as much as possible.
Of course, eventually, there would come a time when our streams would overlap. But that would be later. For now, as a newcomer, I should avoid streaming at the same time as my generation mates.
Rion also said it would be good to avoid overlapping with senior streamers’ important events, like birthday streams.
Experienced fans could watch more than two streams at once, but…
Watching multiple streams at the same time isn’t that enjoyable. It splits your focus, after all.
So, viewers typically watch their favorite stream first, and if they have extra time, they’ll watch other VTubers’ streams afterward.
On the flip side, overlapping streaming schedules could create a filtering effect.
Something like, “Oh, I missed this stream? Then I won’t bother watching.”
-“Plus, when stream times overlap, people might think you’re not getting along.”
-“It’s better to just show a friendly image with your generation mates.”
So, to avoid splitting the audience, I decided to dodge the streaming schedules of Sora, Inagika, and Chel.
[Splitting the audience? H-hold on, are you considering me? I mean, I don’t really mind…]
Sora spoke in a slightly embarrassed voice.
[But it’s a hidden boss solo attempt. The viewers would be really curious.]
“Hmm.”
I thought about it for a moment.
I was planning to stream Labyrinthos in the evening anyway.
More importantly, I didn’t want the 6th generation to see what kind of monster the Wither was just yet.
‘Inagika might know about the Wither, though.’
Among us, she was the most knowledgeable about Minecraft. She knew far more than me, who had only focused on hunting. She could even handle complex things like Bluestone circuits.
But Sora was still a beginner at Minecraft, and Chel didn’t seem to be that advanced either.
For Sora, all of Minecraft’s content would be a fresh experience. That’s why we were adjusting the 6th generation’s Minecraft progress to Sora’s level.
It was my genuine hope that Sora would experience the Wither on her own in the future, rather than through my stream.
“Then, I’ll record the video and upload it after editing.”
That was my conclusion.
I could leave the editing to Rion, and I’d just tell Sora and Chel not to watch it.
With those thoughts in mind, I steered the boat diligently.
Most of the Wither’s attacks had the ‘explosion’ attribute. So, after fighting it, the surrounding terrain would be devastated.
If I fought it near the 6th generation base, there was a chance that Sora’s painstakingly built mansion could be destroyed.
To prevent that, I was crossing the ocean, heading toward the mainland.
“This spot should do.”
After finding a suitable location, I ended the Discord call with Sora.
I only needed two materials.
One was a block item called ‘Soul Sand.’
It was a special sand found in the Nether. Certain crops could only grow on it, and it had various other features, but that wasn’t important right now.
I stacked the Soul Sand.
The next item I pulled out was the ‘Wither Skeleton Skull.’
The Nether was home to monsters known as Wither Skeletons. They were a higher tier than regular skeletons and inflicted special debuffs.
Anyway, the skulls could only be obtained by hunting Wither Skeletons and decapitating them. I had collected three skulls.
As I carefully placed the three skulls on the Soul Sand, a blue light began to emanate.
-Vvrrrooom…
The sand melted, and a skeletal body started to form.
Before long, the ‘Wither’—with its three skeletal heads—stood before me.
As intense light flashed, a massive explosion occurred around us.
-KABOOM!
The Wither’s opening move.
Right after it was summoned, the Wither triggered an explosion with invincibility.
Having seen this pattern before, I had already distanced myself.
The Wither stared at me before flying up into the sky.
‘Fighting the Wither feels a lot like playing a bullet hell game.’
I pulled out my bow.
The Wither, the hidden boss of Minecraft.
The reason this monster was a hidden boss was because the players were inherently at a ‘range disadvantage.’
The Ender Dragon, the game’s final boss, was more of a gimmick boss, while the Wither was a boss that emphasized pure combat.
The main problem was that it flew so high you couldn’t even reach it with a sword.
Unless you used special methods, it was essentially impossible to get close.
And Minecraft’s ranged combat was more inconvenient than in other games.
The arrows flew in an arc, requiring a different aiming sense compared to an FPS, and each shot took time to load.
This created a situation where the Wither could attack one-sidedly.
-KABOOM!
-BOOM!
-KABANG!!
The Wither shot fireballs.
The projectiles were decently fast. But the bigger issue was that its ranged attack had a wide area of effect.
Each time the fireballs hit, they exploded. And worse, these fireballs couldn’t be blocked.
Hiding behind trees was useless since they’d blow right through them. It was better to dodge at a distance than hide behind flimsy cover.
Dodging the Wither’s attacks while drawing my bow, I fired.
There were brief pauses between the Wither’s attacks.
Those short pauses were my limited free-hit opportunities.
-Swish!
I landed an arrow.
Glancing around, I could see the surroundings becoming increasingly desolate.
As mentioned before, almost all of the Wither’s attacks had explosive properties.
Each time the fireballs hit, the ground caved in, gradually altering the surrounding terrain.
As I said, fighting the Wither felt like playing a bullet hell game.
As in most bullet hell games, the priority was to dodge the enemy’s attacks. And since the Wither’s attacks were area-of-effect explosions, running was crucial for evasion.
But the changes to the terrain made running harder.
In other words, the longer the fight dragged on, the harder it became to dodge the Wither’s attacks.
The Wither would gain the upper hand as time went on.
‘Time to change locations.’
After landing a few hits, I quickly moved to a different spot. If I let the terrain around me get too wrecked, it would put me at a disadvantage.
The Wither chased after me.
-Zap!
The Wither glowed for a moment.
Recognizing the attack, I dashed backward.
-CRASH!!!
The Wither smashed through trees and rocks as it charged at me. Its rush pattern.
As soon as the Wither landed, there was another explosion.
I avoided the blast radius and then turned to charge at the Wither.
It was time to use the sword I had been saving.
-Slash!
I swung the sword.
Minecraft, at its core, was a sandbox game.
Of course, some level of adventure and combat was required, but compared to RPGs, it didn’t demand particularly difficult battles.
The Wither was a fairly tricky boss, but it generously provided openings to deal damage.
Now that it was on the ground, this was my chance to pour in some damage.
-Thud! Thud! Thud!
A dull sound echoed with each strike.
Despite its skeletal appearance, the Wither was tough, as expected of a boss mob.
However, the sword I was wielding was a near-endgame-level diamond sword crafted by Sora. It could easily be called a masterpiece.
After only a few strikes, chunks of its health were gone.
The Wither’s eyes flashed.
-KABOOM!!
Another explosion.
It was almost identical to the opening move I had seen earlier.
Though I got caught in the blast, it was a non-damaging pattern that only sent my avatar flying.
-Vrrrooom…
A blue shield enveloped the Wither.
And then, one by one, red Wither Skeleton soldiers began appearing around it. The Wither’s second phase pattern, ‘Minion Summon.’
This meant the Wither’s health had dropped to 50%.
“Now the real game begins.”
I muttered as I watched the Wither float back into the sky.
Since it was a PC game, it lacked the same depth as Labyrinthos. Playing with just a keyboard and mouse didn’t allow for diverse controls.
Yet, those inconveniences made the game feel like it had ‘restrictions.’
Playing a game under such difficult conditions created a unique sense of satisfaction.
Not every game in the world could be called fun, but a fun game had its own distinct charm.
Licking my lips, I steadied my focus.
My eyes met the Wither’s.
And then… the Wither fled far into the distance.
“…What?”
What the heck? Why is it running away?
Where is it going all of a sudden?
The Wither moved so fast that I couldn’t even chase after it. I just stood there, dumbfounded, watching it disappear.
But the Wither never returned, and only the red Wither Skeleton soldiers it left behind slowly approached me.
…Was this a bug?
A boss mob suddenly fleeing? That couldn’t be right.
Puzzled and confused, I soon noticed a message.
【Shiroki_Anna was killed by the Wither.】
…?
What the heck just happened?
