Chapter 58 - Evacuation
Watching the child’s focused gaze fixated on the miniature mecha model, Mr. Carlo felt no irritation at all, even though she didn’t spare him a glance.
There were still quite a few promising talents among the younger generation.
As he had walked around earlier, he noticed that most of the participants were still able to grasp some concepts, albeit in a vague way. However, there were very few who could actually piece things together independently. Still, for those with a basic understanding, it was quite good.
Mr. Carlo felt that his recent frustrations had diminished somewhat.
Hmm? This one seems to have some potential; he unconsciously walked over.
As he got closer, he was even more surprised to see that she was assembling the main body shell. Generally, beginners find it difficult to start and usually begin with the limbs or head, as those parts are more visually distinctive and easier to handle, unlike the main body, which requires more flexibility and precision.
Moreover, she was already nearing completion, only needing to connect the two sections.
After a quick glance, Carlo noted that the main body shell was coming along very well, nearly matching the data from the miniature model he had disassembled. The parts fit together nicely… very impressive. He observed her with some surprise; although she was older than most of the participants, in the field of mecha craftsmanship, talent was valued more than age.
Her techniques were clearly inexperienced, but her touch was quite good, and many of her actions seemed to follow her instincts. It was obvious she was a novice.
He unconsciously watched her for a while, and when he saw her attempting to install those two small parts first, he instinctively wanted to correct her. However, that ended up causing her to misalign the assembly instead.
In fact… if she had maintained that angle earlier, she might have succeeded. Beginners who get used to such shortcuts often end up misaligning things, and it becomes easy to develop bad habits when they learn in the future.
He pointed out a few more details, and she was able to grasp them fairly quickly. Now he was genuinely interested and couldn’t help but want to ask her something. Just then, a person who looked like a staff member hurried over and made some hand gestures towards him, appearing quite urgent.
Mr. Carlo was initially puzzled, but when he followed the person’s gaze, his expression changed instantly, and he didn’t bother to look back before hurriedly leaving.
Jiang Hui was unaffected by this; she glanced at Carlo’s hurried departure and then looked down at the partially assembled mecha model, momentarily lost in thought.
She wondered if… if she hadn’t been interrupted just now, would she have been able to finish it?
However, after looking it over again, she ultimately decided against taking it apart. Forget it; she would finish it first and think about it later.
Sure enough, just as Jiang Hui had thought, once the main torso was assembled, the assembly of the remaining limbs and head became much easier.
It really felt like assembling a Gundam model; Jiang Hui sensed that she had gained some inspiration while assembling the torso, which helped her understand the process better, and she quickly installed the two legs.
Just as she was about to continue with the other two arms, someone suddenly “banged” open the door with a dull thud.
Everyone in the conference hall turned to look in the direction of the noise.
“Clop, clop—”
The sound of footsteps was particularly pronounced in the silent conference hall.
The crowd had initially looked on with curiosity, but upon seeing the newcomer, they all appeared startled, and the spacious area was immediately filled with murmurs.
A small squad of soldiers in military uniforms burst into the conference hall, causing the social elites in the front rows, who had been engrossed in their networking, to panic.
The military usually only deals with military matters, and their sudden appearance couldn’t be over some minor public safety issue.
What happened?!
Perhaps noticing the underlying chaos among the elites, the leading soldier, clearly experienced, slammed something down on the podium with a loud “thud.”
Once they saw what had been thrown down, those who had wanted to take the opportunity to escape suddenly froze in place, silenced.
The children below were still unclear about the situation; they were very curious about these unexpected “guests” who seemed so out of place in their surroundings.
“Everyone, we apologize, but your activity is likely to be temporarily halted. Please pack your things, be accompanied by your guardians, and leave this place as soon as possible.” Although the soldier used the word “likely,” his tone left no room for negotiation and was undoubtedly commanding.
Something really did happen!
The once orderly conference hall was suddenly thrown into disarray.
These gluttonous fools, who usually don’t contribute to society, were already unproductive enough, but at such a time, they were only causing chaos, even less useful than the children. It was truly frustrating to witness.
“Click—” the sound of a weapon’s safety being disengaged echoed.
Some people felt their courage almost shatter. Compared to the potential unknown dangers, they realized that this squad of soldiers in control of the situation was the real source of danger.
“Older ones, lead the way. Don’t let the children get lost, and don’t linger in this building.” The leading soldier no longer paid attention to the people behind and waved a hand to have one soldier “supervise” their exit, ensuring that these incapable individuals wouldn’t inadvertently endanger the minors in their panic.
They had now pinpointed the location of the traitors and had dispatched troops to surround and block them in the area across from them.
However, large crowds still gathered in other areas. The military learned that there were several social events taking place in the eastern part of the group, which had hundreds of thousands of semi-awakened individuals, so they sent elite teams to evacuate the crowds. This was to prevent the traitors from becoming desperate and doing anything reckless.
As for the rest, they also formed smaller teams to ensure that the evacuation was completed within two star hours.
Although most of the participants were still young, they were interstellar citizens and quickly grasped the urgency of the situation when the soldiers suddenly burst in to carry out the evacuation.
At the urging of the elders, the people in the conference hall quickly sprang into action. Some hurriedly called their younger companions, others quickly packed their belongings and sought out the main group, while a few who were still confused followed the crowd’s movements.
Jiang Hui was naturally among them. She had never seen such a scene before. However, she wasn’t blind; the soldiers who entered were all armed with advanced polymer firearms, their demeanor solemn. The immediate warning to evacuate made it clear that this was no trivial matter.
Suppressing her slight panic, she carefully placed the items on the table, including everything she had worked hard on throughout the day, into her small backpack. Then she tossed the entire bag into her spatial pocket and, looking for a gap in the crowd, ran toward the exit.
If the conference hall had seemed relatively calm moments ago, upon leaving, she found that the corridor outside was completely chaotic.
A large number of soldiers were stationed outside the conference hall, with dark military uniforms visible in every direction. Their faces were cold and serious, armed with various high-tech weapons developed to a high standard. Their silence spoke louder than any words could convey.
This was Jiang Hui’s first encounter with the legendary imperial soldiers. Even without facing them directly, she could feel the palpable pressure they exuded.
