Chapter 59 - Wounds
The soldiers stood tall and straight, lined up uniformly at the side. Their presence was so strong that anyone with ill intentions dared not make a move. They stood firm and steady, like mountains, providing a sense of security to the anxious crowd.
Those notified to evacuate seemed to have finally found their anchor. Although they continued to flee, they began to find their footing.
However, there were simply too many people, as if the entire group had gathered in this area. A constant flow of people moved back and forth, and during the evacuation, the corridor became congested with their belongings. Despite the numerous soldiers and staff assisting in the crowd control, the situation remained somewhat chaotic.
Jiang Hui had no experience and was unfortunate enough to encounter several rough people rushing by, almost colliding with her. In the chaos, she was suddenly shoved by someone, causing her to stumble off course. Fortunately, a kind stranger nearby caught her, saving her from the tragedy of falling flat on her face.
But she had been pushed so hard that the person could not hold her, and in the next moment, something hit her forehead. A cool, metallic sensation unique to inorganic materials pierced into her mind, causing her to shiver and feel an urge to escape. Yet the hand that had steadied her felt like a vice, holding her firmly in place.
What bad luck had she run into today?!
Just then, the object that had caused the sharp pain in her forehead seemed to be pulled away, and the grip on her arm loosened slightly, transitioning from a clamp to a supportive hold, allowing her to regain her balance.
Jiang Hui stood up in a rather disheveled manner, feeling a throbbing pain on her forehead and a sharp ache in the back of her left arm. In the end, she could only squint her eyes and mutter, “… Thank you.”
The other person remained silent, offering no response.
Then she felt a cold gaze settle on her, lingering briefly on her forehead.
“Be careful…” The low voice was devoid of any inflection. “Hurry and leave.”
Once Jiang Hui managed to steady herself, she noticed that the person who had helped her was quite tall and wearing… military uniform?! At her current height, she could only see the insignia on their chest when looking straight ahead.
After reminding her to leave, the person’s gaze shifted away as they took a step forward. She instinctively looked up but could only vaguely make out half of a chiseled profile and a faint mole just below the outer corner of their right eye.
Jiang Hui stood there in a daze, walking a good distance before glancing back, but she could no longer see even the shadow of that small squad. The crowd continued to “push” her along, and she moved farther away.
Fortunately, nothing else happened along the way. After the crowd was hurriedly evacuated to the designated area, she left the Dongbo Group’s branch building without looking back.
What had started as a pleasant day had turned into such chaos. Although she had escaped the danger zone, Jiang Hui had no desire to linger outside. She simply called for an airship and headed straight back to her apartment.
Once home, Jiang Hui was still shaken, repeatedly checking to ensure that all the doors and windows were locked before she felt a bit calmer.
She sat on the couch in the living room for a while, unsure of how long she had been sitting there, until she noticed a slight chill on her body and realized it was already dark outside.
Jiang Hui didn’t even feel like eating. She trudged heavily back to her bedroom, ready to wash up and get into bed to calm herself down.
After a hasty wash, she put on her comfortable loungewear. Just as she was about to turn and leave the bathroom, she caught sight of her reflection in the full-length mirror at the exit, revealing that her forehead was red and swollen over a large area.
She slowly approached the mirror, frowning as she observed the sudden redness and swelling on her forehead.
Running her fingertips over it, she noticed the surface was quite uneven, with several irregular marks, and one area seemed as if it had been pierced by a sharp object, leaving a few noticeable red dots. When she pressed down on it, she let out a sharp hiss of pain as some blood was forced out.
This mark… she remembered now, was from when that soldier had helped her earlier; it was clearly the result of bumping against something hard. Now that she thought about it, it couldn’t have been from hitting someone else’s gun, could it?
Jiang Hui couldn’t help but chuckle bitterly. Truly something, to have fallen directly onto someone’s gun barrel. She should be thankful that she had only made contact with it in the most literal and non-lethal sense.
She really needed to be more careful… or else the next time she got caught up in a chaotic situation, that second life of hers might just get lost for real.
After carefully inspecting the wound on her forehead and confirming that there were no major issues, she took out a small treatment device to repair the damage to her skin, not stopping until the surface was smooth and undamaged again.
Jiang Hui felt a genuine mental fatigue; her rational mind was constantly urging her to sleep on her bed, but then she suddenly remembered that she hadn’t taken her dose of stabilizing medication for the day. Struggling, she sat up.
Other matters could wait until later, but she had to take her medication on time.
So, she had to return to the living room and took a tube of stabilizing medication from the cold storage. Without caring whether it tasted good or not, she gulped it down in one go. Only then could she return to her room to rest. As soon as she closed her eyes, she almost immediately fell asleep, forgetting all about her mental space and just wanting to bury her head in sleep.
Thus, she found herself waking up in the mental space, and Jiang Hui was not at all surprised.
Looking at the time in the space, she realized it was already past seven o’clock. Hmm… it should be in the morning since she felt like her sleep had been just right, and she felt relatively refreshed without that splitting headache from oversleeping.
Even though she woke up in the mental space, it still counted as a good rest. Jiang Hui finally felt that the shock she experienced at the Dongbo Group branch had eased considerably, and now she had a bit of energy to think about what had happened today.
Wasn’t it said that the resident star systems were quite safe? How could such a big conglomerate like Dongbo Group still bring in the military? It was hard to believe that nothing was wrong.
One could say that Jiang Hui was unlucky, or that interstellar people perhaps had a different understanding of the word “safety.” She had been in the interstellar realm for quite a few days now, and on the one random day she chose to attend an event, she ended up encountering such a dramatic situation. It was quite remarkable.
Now, Jiang Hui felt even more aware of the differences between this world and the one she had lived in before. At least in her home country on Blue Star, it was the safest place in the world—without a doubt.
After indulging in her random thoughts, Jiang Hui suddenly felt extremely hungry, a hunger more intense than she had ever experienced. An alarm went off in her mind, and she quickly got up to find something to eat in the living room.
Actually, Jiang Hui didn’t really understand why she would feel hungry in her dreams. Moreover, the sensation was so vivid that even in this mental space, she often found herself searching for something to fill her stomach.
