Chapter 21: Chapter 20: leave
"Warbeast! You can't escape!"
The moment the cat heard the voice, it sprang onto the roof in an instant, its three paws and two small horns glinting in the light.
Sakiya Kihana stood on the ground below, forming a makeshift aiming frame with her hands. She narrowed her right eye, locking onto the cat within her imaginary crosshairs.
Then, she shouted.
"Great Dimensional Walker! Now!
Dimensional Barrier Lockdown!"
Tsuchiya Tsukigami was already on the other side of the roof, gripping a hunting net in his trembling hands. At the sound of his ridiculous codename, his body stiffened.
Like a soulless husk, he weakly flung the net forward.
His whole presence radiated despair as he muttered under his breath,
"I can't show my face after this… I can't show my face… I want to die…"
The cat reacted swiftly, twisting mid-air to evade the net before making a powerful leap toward the neighboring rooftop.
Sakiya smirked, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
"Hmm~ little demon. You think you can escape? Not when the Death Pact is on the hunt!"
She turned sharply.
"Last Demon! Take it down! Death Charge!"
Sakuragi visibly flinched at the mention of his codename, but he didn't hesitate.
The airborne cat had nowhere left to turn. With perfect timing, Sakuragi lunged, catching the creature square in his arms. He rolled on impact, cushioning the fall as he tumbled to the ground.
The cat flailed, its tiny claws scratching at the air in a desperate struggle.
Sakuragi winced as a few sharp scratches found their mark, but he refused to let go.
At that moment, Sakiya trotted over, squatting in front of Sakuragi with an intense expression.
She raised her right hand, forming a finger-gun, and pointed it directly at the kitten's forehead.
The cat froze.
Its wild thrashing ceased as it stared into the girl's unwavering eyes.
Sakiya spoke with absolute conviction.
"You can't escape, Warbeast."
The kitten's small ears drooped.
"Meow…"
It gave in, accepting its fate.
Sakuragi slowly stood up, the subdued cat still resting in his arms.
Sakiya reached out, gently stroking the kitten's head. Her eyes gleamed as she felt the soft fur beneath her fingers.
By now, Chihiro had walked over, arms crossed.
"Oh~ not bad." She gave a nod of approval.
"You're completing D-rank missions faster and faster."
Sakiya ignored her, instead taking the cat from Sakuragi's arms and cradling it close. She stroked it absentmindedly, reveling in the soft sensation.
The kitten, surprisingly, didn't resist. Instead, its small eyes narrowed in contentment, its body relaxing completely. With a satisfied sigh, it nestled against Sakiya's chest, letting out occasional pleased meows.
Chihiro watched in disbelief.
"Huh. I never thought this cat would get so close to Sakiya. It gave us so much trouble before, always escaping at the last second. It barely tolerated us ninjas."
Sakuragi adjusted his glasses, watching the serene moment between girl and cat. His voice was calm, but his words carried weight.
"Sakiya has always had a unique presence. Like a wildflower—pure, untamed, and unbothered by the world. To her, everything must feel like a game."
Chihiro shot him a sidelong glance.
"Sakuragi… you sound like you've got something on your mind."
Sakuragi blinked. Then, as if brushing off his own words, he said,
"It's nothing, teacher. I was just thinking out loud. Let's turn in the mission."
With that, he turned and walked toward Sakiya.
Chihiro watched his retreating back, a strange feeling settling in her chest.
(What kind of story do you carry, Sakuragi? What have you been through… to think this way at only thirteen?)
The kitten was eventually returned to its owner, who tearfully took it back.
Sakiya let out a small sigh, but she didn't seem too disappointed.
Chihiro glanced at the three of them and chuckled.
"Without realizing it, we've already completed nearly forty D-rank missions."
Tsuchiya groaned.
"Ugh… Don't remind me."
"Ms. Chihiro, can we take on a more advanced mission outside the village?"
For D-rank missions, neither Tsuchiya Tsukigami nor Sakuragi had any objections.
However, D-rank missions usually involved trivial tasks—helping villagers with their daily problems. Lately, the two had been subjected to endless jokes thanks to their over-the-top codenames.
If this continued, Tsuchiya feared his ridiculous title, "Great Dimensional Walker," would become infamous.
Chihiro recalled all the absurd moments these three had caused in the past few days and couldn't help but chuckle.
Everyone immediately knew she was laughing at them.
Tsuchiya flared up. "Ms. Chihiro!" he protested.
Chihiro, having had her fun, composed herself and turned her attention to the leader of the group.
"Sakiya, what do you think?"
Sakiya Kihana clenched her small fists and took a determined step forward.
"The Eye of Death fears no challenge!"
Chihiro paused, lost in thought for a moment.
Sakuragi took the opportunity to speak up.
"Sensei, I also recommend taking a higher-ranked mission outside the village."
Hearing this, Chihiro stopped teasing them and pulled out a scroll.
"Well, you're in luck. I already made arrangements. This time, it's a C-rank mission."
The three of them instantly perked up.
"Teacher, show us!"
"We need to understand the mission details."
"This contract of death has been accepted!"
Chihiro led Sakiya and the others to the Hokage's office, where they met the mission's representative—a young man.
However, he wasn't the actual client.
Their mission was to travel to Luoying Town and escort Kyoto Tokumoto safely to Konoha.
Tokumoto was a merchant who supplied Konoha with a specific amount of medicinal herbs every year. His business wasn't particularly significant compared to Konoha's other trade partners, but it was still steady.
The young man accompanying them was their guide.
He wore a white headband and a modern-looking outfit—a white short-sleeved shirt and pants resembling jeans.
His name was Ochiaisuke.
Ochiaisuke sized up the three young shinobi standing beside Chihiro.
But rather than underestimating them, he remained neutral. He had posted multiple commissions before and was familiar with Konoha's standard team formations—one Jonin leading three Genin for field experience.
Chihiro approached with a polite smile.
"Mr. Ochiaisuke, thank you for waiting."
Ochiaisuke smiled back. "Haha, I just arrived as well. Shall we go over the details?"
Chihiro nodded. "Of course. I'm Fujiwara Chihiro, a Jonin of Konoha, and these are my three students."
Ochiaisuke extended his hand for a handshake. "Looking forward to working with you."
But Chihiro ignored the gesture.
Ochiaisuke awkwardly retracted his hand, but he didn't seem too bothered. He knew Konoha's shinobi were often distant and formal. As a businessman, he had dealt with all sorts of personalities.
Sakiya, however, noticed the subtle rudeness in Chihiro's reaction.
(Does she dislike this guy for some reason…?)
But no matter how she looked at him, she couldn't see anything particularly off about him.
With introductions complete, the team finalized their preparations and set off.
Sakiya glanced at Konoha's village gate, excitement sparkling in her eyes.
"So… this is where the true ninja life begins, huh?"
Chihiro, seeing the enthusiasm on their faces, smirked.
"Check your gear and make sure your ninja pouches are in order."
Then, she took a step forward.
"Move out!"
