Chapter 39: A Table Mirror
A crimson moon hung in the fog-shrouded sky, and it cast an eerie glow over the deserted graveyard.
The graveyard had dark tombstones overgrown with ivy and moss, and fog clung to the ground like a spectral blanket.
In the middle of the graveyard, there was a stone-edged doorway—it wasn't connected to anything—and it just stood there with an arched top.
At that moment, mist began pouring out of the top of the stone-edged doorway, swirling around in a hypnotic dance, and a young man just stepped out of the mist.
He was standing in a shirt with brown trousers and worn-out leather boots—it was cold in the graveyard, so he immediately shuddered.
"W-where am I… Is this the Realm Between?"
Kael asked, his voice trembling, and he looked around at the eerie gravestones surrounding him.
It really didn't feel like he was in the Whitesky anymore, as the air around here was very oppressive and heavy.
It was like there were some extra weights on top of his shoulders.
Gallop! Gallop!
At that moment, within the fog-shrouded graveyard, Kael was able to see a silhouette of a horse—there was a rider on top of it—galloping towards somewhere at full speed.
With a flick of his wrist, Kael summoned his black revolver and jumped behind one of the taller gravestones.
He made himself small, crafted a bullet with a pebble, and slid it inside the rolling chamber of his revolver.
'The horse and rider… Could it be Rav'akari?'
At that moment, he heard the horse stop running—it was walking behind the gravestone—and was neighing loudly.
Tap! Tap! Tap!
"Neeeeeeeeeeigh!"
The horse kicked its front leg up suddenly, and the pale-armored rider drew his sword with a menacing gleam.
When the horse's front legs landed back on the fog-blanketed ground, it kicked up into a run, and the rider with his horse disappeared into the fog.
"Whew…"
Kael climbed to sit on one knee, then made his revolver disappear, and walked in the opposite direction of the horse.
He didn't want to stay any longer in the graveyard—it was literally one of the creepiest places to be at—and he was really hoping that this world wasn't all darkness.
At that moment, he came across one of the ruins of a once grand castle, and it looked like the graveyard was built around it.
In one of the cracked windows of the grand castle, he saw his reflection, and any other time, he wouldn't think anything of it.
However, now, it made his feet stop.
There was no face—no eyes, no nose, no mouth, and not even ears—it was just a smooth, featureless head staring back at him.
At least, he still had his black hair decorating the top of his head, but otherwise, it was the creepiest thing he'd ever seen.
"W-what the hell?"
Kael touched his featureless face and couldn't feel his nose or anything like that—it was strange because he was still able to see, smell, and hear—as if he still had all of his body parts.
"Well… At least I won't be recognized here, but what the hell is this?"
Kael headed out of the graveyard—he hopped over an iron fence—and walked till he came across a ruined town.
The buildings were made out of dark stone, but most of them were crumbling to the ground, and it didn't feel like anyone had lived here for over a thousand years.
However, he found a small shack—it had a wooden roof—and looked like it was still in decent condition.
Well, 'decent' condition compared to the rest of the ruined town. It was still riddled with holes.
Kael opened its door—the shack was empty and dusty—and he was about to take a step inside, but then he saw something extremely creepy.
There was a marionette of a creepy clown dangling from the ceiling. It had a hangman's knot around its neck. It looked like someone hung it.
Its mouth was smiling.
"Yeah, maybe not…"
Kael slammed the door shut and kept walking down the town, but then, when he reached the darkened square, he found something interesting.
There was a structure that looked like a pavilion or gazebo—it was all built from black stone—and had a raised platform with steps leading up to it.
It was really spacious with a round-shaped table in the middle of it—it was also made out of black stone—and had a few stone thrones placed around it.
When Kael made up the steps and walked to the table, he noticed that it had a round-shaped mirror etched into the surface of it.
It helped him to get a nice look of his faceless self.
"This structure, and the table look like the only things that have been fully maintained over here. Has someone been visiting this place, and if they have, why?"
Kael traced his finger across the surface of the mirror and thought if there was anything interesting about that.
However, to him, it just looked like any other mirror—it just happened to be etched strangely into the table.
At that moment, the mirror fogged up.
"Huh? It's hazy now?"
Kael thought with a frown. ThiscopywasgeneratedfromcontentatMV|LEMPYR.
"Neeeeeeeeeeeeeigh!"
The sound of the horse's neigh came from the entrance of the ruined town—it sounded loud and was mighty—and the sound of its gallops came close.
Kael quickly hopped off the railing of the structure and hid behind a nearby pile of rubble—the black revolver appeared in his hand—and he gazed towards the town square.
The horse came to the stop in front of the structure, and the pale rider stepped down. He then made his way up the stairs and sat in one of the stone thrones.
'Why has he come here? Is this a meeting place of Rav'akari or something like that? It might've been an enormous mistake to come here.
'I should've studied more about the Realm Between before coming here. I didn't know anything before I came here.
'Who knows, this place might be a thousand times more dangerous than Whitesky?
'I am so fucking brain-dead!'
At that moment, more people came from the town—they were walking and were wearing masks—and they took their seats around the table.
"Nice to see you all again!"
With a cheerful voice, a young woman with a doll mask said—the mask had a blush, red lips, and cute button nose with arched eyebrows—it made her look lovely.
"Wait a moment!"
A woman with a starry mask raised her hand. She wore a long dress, with her long fingers filled with rings, and had long legs.
When she spoke, everyone turned silent to hear her out, and she then turned to look to the distance.
"We are not alone here."
