Chapter 21: The Making of King Arthur
Several months later, in Southern Britannia.
Altria led her beloved horse, pacing back and forth outside the camp, until the sun set before finally making up her mind to enter.
Inside the camp, Luo En, who was setting up a Magic Array, heard the commotion and turned to look at his beloved student:
"Got everything?"
"Yes."
Altria replied in a muffled voice, casually handing over the bundle in her arms.
However, Luo En weighed it in his hand, then opened it to take a look, and couldn't help but furrow his brow:
"Why are there only a few pieces of bread? The count isn't right."
"On the way, I met some children who haven't eaten for days..."
"So, you gave them our rations?"
"Only my share, yours is still here, teacher!"
Altria hurriedly explained.
"What about the tent?" Luo En asked again.
"We came across a woman who was about to give birth; they needed it more than us to keep warm."
"And the medicine?"
"There were injured people among the refugees who escaped..."
Altria's voice grew softer and more uncertain.
Seeing the embarrassment on his student's face, Luo En shook his head:
"Alright, what about the remaining money? I'll go to the town myself to buy more."
"..."
Altria did not respond, only lowered her head guiltily.
Ah, the old habit of meddling in others' affairs is acting up again.
Luo En sighed helplessly, solemnly reminding her:
"Altria, you should understand, you can't help everyone..."
"Helping one is better than none."
Altria looked up at her teacher.
Her gaze was serious, her tone firm,
her face still cold, but deep down exuding compassion for Life.
Respecting and cherishing life is the nature of the Earth Mother God in every mythical system.
As the reincarnation of Origin Goddess Danu, Altria was no exception.
However, a loud rumble from her empty stomach shattered this solemnity and sanctity.
Luo En, tear in a smile, took a few still-warm pieces of bread from the bundle, and stuffed them into his student's hand:
"Forget it, you've been running around and are also hungry, eat something to fill your stomach."
The rich aroma of wheat wafted over, and Altria couldn't help but swallow.
For months, she hadn't had a proper meal.
Especially after entering the Southern Realm, she continuously and secretly shared her rations with the growing number of refugees on the road, leaving herself with little food.
The strong hunger drove her appetite, making her want to devour a few Bulls on the spot.
But in the end, Altria shook her head, firmly pushing away the tempting bread before her, and said to Luo En:
"Teacher, you taught me that everyone should be responsible for their own choices. Giving my food to others was my decision, you shouldn't have to bear it for me. If there's nothing else, I'll go feed Brodeville; it's lost a lot of weight lately too."
"Brodeville" is a superb warhorse personally tamed by Altria, named with the help of Luo En, derived from Greek, meaning "Minotaur" or "Bull-Headed", symbolizing bravery, loyalty, and strength.
Before Luo En could persuade her to stay, Altria turned and led her beloved horse toward the distant grassland.
Watching the pair gradually fade into the distance, Luo En shook his head, internally reflecting.
——Having principles is good, but it's easy to be stubborn.
~~
The twilight deepens.
In the woods, the warhorse happily chomps on leaves and grass, the rich fragrance of vegetation pervading the air.
Altria rubs her loudly gurgling stomach, her throat continuously moving, and emerald green eyes fixate on the tender leaves and grass.
——Humans can probably eat these too?
Just as Altria contemplated whether to actually take a bite, a rich aroma wafted over from afar, exuding the tempting allure of fat.
What a delicious smell, it's meat!
Rabbit meat, Wild Boar, along with roasted mushrooms and mushroom soup!
Quickly identifying the ingredients by scent, Altria's eyes lit up, and she swallowed wildly.
The girl rubbed her growling belly, her mind becoming a bit fuzzy:
Perhaps, she should have saved half a piece of bread for herself.
Yes, half a piece is fine, having just a little wouldn't be a problem.
Amid her thoughts, Altria vaguely caught the rich aroma of wheat from her hand.
She closed her eyes, eagerly placing each of her right-hand fingers into her mouth to suck on them, her rolling tongue trying to find any remaining crumbs between her fingers.
——Earlier, she used this hand to break the bread and give it to those children.
Yet, even after sucking her fingers red and leaving a row of shallow teeth marks, she still felt no sense of fullness, and instead, became even hungrier.
Just as Altria's spirit was wandering off, a whistling sound broke the air.
"Whizz!"
A block-shaped piece of something rich in aroma cut a graceful arc through the air, plummeting to the ground.
Altria's eyes snapped open, and like a lioness on the hunt, she leaped up swiftly, catching the descending half-roasted rabbit in her mouth, tearing at the warm meat strips with her canine teeth, swallowing them whole to soothe her growling stomach.
As if in a whirlwind, she devoured the half-roasted rabbit down to its clean bones, and she still licked her greasy hands with relish, trying to absorb every bit of nutrition.
Yet, her actions seemed like a lion licking its fur, inexplicably cute.
