Chapter 21 The Making of King Arthur_2
Luo En walked out from the forest, unable to hold back a chuckle, pointing at the campfire not far away, along with the soup pot and meat hanging over it:
"The meal is ready. Aren't you going to come over and eat?"
"But teacher, I gave away all my own food. I should bear this responsibility myself and not let you consume rations in vain."
"Don't worry, my portion of oatcakes is still untouched in the bag. These are freshly hunted prey and wild flavors gathered from the forest. Since we are traveling as a team, there should be a share for you."
Luo En blinked mischievously.
Seeing his student still hesitating, he immediately raised an eyebrow:
"You're not eating? Then I'll throw away the leftovers because I can't finish them."
"Wasting food is shameful!"
Altria hurriedly stopped this action, immediately following her teacher swiftly to the fire.
After a tireless effort, she managed to rescue half a wild boar, three wild rabbits, twenty skewers of roasted mushrooms, and a whole pot of mushroom soup into her stomach.
Following this binge eating, Altria contentedly rubbed her bulging belly, stretching lazily with joy.
After a brief rest, the girl turned her head, solemnly looking at the face illuminated by the firelight:
"Teacher, thank you."
She wasn't an ignorant child and naturally could feel the care contained in this grand feast.
Luo En poked the fire, smiling silently.
Seeing the teacher didn't pursue the matter, Altria gradually relaxed and couldn't help but ask her inner confusion:
"Teacher, why are so many refugees migrating to the Mist Forest? Isn't this the territory of the elves? Aren't they afraid of getting captured by the elves?"
Elves are beings difficult to define by human standards of good and evil. They are not skilled in creation and independent thought but enjoy imitating human behaviors, absorbing intense emotions from humans, with some even considering humans as a source of food.
Thus, in Celtic legends, there are many cases of humans being abducted by elves to be kept in their territories or directly killed and eaten.
Adding the sporadic appearance of Magic Beasts and relatively barren land, the Southern Realm is not a good settlement for those refugees struggling to get enough to eat.
"If captured by elves, perhaps they can stay alive. But if they stay in the Northern Realm, they will definitely die!"
Luo En answered while poking the fire.
Altria was a bit surprised: "Is the situation over there that bad?"
Luo En glanced sideways at Altria, dropped the stick in his hand, and led his beloved student to a high slope, placing his hand on her shoulder:
"See for yourself."
The warmth of Divine Power surged into her eyes, instantly extending Altria's vision by hundreds of times.
Standing at a height, sapphire green eyes gazed afar, shock and disbelief freezing on her delicate face.
As far as she could see, a dry riverbed, barren land, and a sky filled with yellow sand met her view.
On the fields, the soil cracked extensively, devoid of any trace of greenery; formerly brimming waters left only deep pits of silt, the fish that once swam there decayed into piles of white bones; vegetation along the roadsides wilted and decayed, and in the foul-smelling ditches, one could vaguely see the corpses of dead livestock and even human skeletons.
The sky shrouded in lead-grey clouds lingered indefinitely, thunderstorms flashing among them like roaming snake pythons, striking down constantly.
The life-nearly-extinct wilderness, stirred with turbulent Magic Power streams, formed spiraling wind pillars connecting heaven and earth, wreaking havoc on the surface, sweeping dead branches and gravel into the mix, the friction between airflow and debris producing a piercing wail, akin to the wails of Specters.
More terrifyingly, one deep pit after another, exuding black gas, appeared on what was once an open plain.
The scattered scars transformed the visible surface into a scene akin to a Meteorite impact disaster.
At this moment, ant-like human figures formed a staggering long line, swaying as they crossed the wasteland that resembled the moon's surface, any slight misstep would lead to falling into a hundred-meter-deep pit.
In the howling wind and sand, the refugees wrapped themselves tightly, mechanically migrating across the wasteland like walking corpses, with the vitality and light in their eyes being eroded little by little.
"Sob sob..."
Nearby the refugees, wolves with bloodshot eyes, showing ribs and bones, were prowling around the migrating groups.
These beasts were not in a hurry to attack humans but instead kept a certain distance, quietly following behind, dragging the dying by the roadside into nearby ditches, filling their hungry stomachs.
The migrants lacked the strength to drive away these wolves, and the wolves didn't have the energy to hunt humans.
Surprisingly, both sides maintained a strange ecological relationship, stopping and going across the wasteland.
But in Altria's eyes, she only saw pervasive desolation and despair.
Such brutal scenes continually entered Altria's vision, bringing intense impact and shock.
The Mercy innate to the Mother Earth made her somewhat unwilling to watch, instinctively raising her hand to clutch Luo En's arm, asking:
"Teacher, is all this Vortigern's doing?"
"Yes, as you see."
"Why? Hasn't he already become the king of Britain? Why does he still cause such harm to his own subjects?"
"Because becoming king is not his goal. Letting this World die is."
Luo En answered solemnly, slowly revealing the truth.
Vortigern was not a true human but the Incarnation of the death will of Britain Island, born from countless filth and resentment deep within the earth veins.
