Chapter 19: The Investigation –(REMAKE)
The investigation began in earnest. It was like a very high-stakes, very dangerous game of 'Clue,' except the murderer was the guy who ran the house, and the weapon was, you know, time itself. Joe and Adam were the unlikely detectives, operating in the shadows of S.T.A.R. Labs, trying to expose the man who was pulling all the strings.
" This is way more exciting than my old job. Back then, the most dangerous thing I did was try to assemble IKEA furniture without crying. Now, I'm basically a spy, trying to catch a time-traveling supervillain. My resume is going to look amazing."
Their first step: Wells's office. Joe, using his detective skills, managed to get a plausible reason to be in Wells's office alone – a "missing file" from a metahuman case. Adam, meanwhile, used his "CSI Consultant" cover to "help" Joe search, while secretly using his 'Enhanced Observation' to scan for anything out of place.
"He's too careful, Adam," Joe whispered, running his hand along a bookshelf. "Everything's perfectly organized. Too perfectly."
"That's the sign of a true villain, Joe," Adam whispered back, peering behind a large portrait. "The ones who are messy are just amateurs. The real pros have everything in its place. Including their secrets."
Adam's eyes scanned the room, picking up on subtle anomalies. A faint, almost imperceptible shimmer around a section of the wall. A slight difference in the dust accumulation on a specific floor tile. A microscopic scuff mark on the carpet that seemed to lead nowhere.
"Here," Adam murmured, pointing to a section of the wall behind Wells's desk. "The dust is different here. And there's a faint energy signature. My 'intuitive ability' is screaming 'secret passage!'"
Joe, skeptical but trusting, examined the area. He pressed, he pushed, he ran his hand along the wall. Nothing.
"Adam, there's nothing here," Joe sighed.
"Not with brute force, Joe," Adam said, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Think like a supervillain. What's the one thing they always have? A hidden button. Or a secret code. Or a very specific sequence of movements."
Adam remembered the show. The hidden room. The Time Vault. He knew the trigger. It was in Wells's wheelchair. A subtle pressure point.
"Look at his wheelchair, Joe," Adam said, pointing subtly. "Specifically, the armrest. There's a small indentation. What if it's a pressure plate? And what if it needs to be pressed in a specific sequence?"
Joe, intrigued, examined the wheelchair. He found the indentation. He pressed it. Nothing.
"Okay, maybe not just a press," Adam mused, trying to recall the exact sequence from the show. "What if it's a pattern? Like… a tap, tap, hold? Or a specific pressure point, combined with a… a thought?"
He tried to guide Joe without giving too much away. "Think about how he moves, Joe. His habits. His routines. What if he activates it without even thinking?"
Joe, with his detective's mind, started mimicking Wells's subtle movements, the way he'd sometimes adjust his armrest, a seemingly unconscious gesture. He tried a specific sequence of taps and pressures.
Suddenly, with a soft whirring sound, a section of the wall behind the desk slid open, revealing a hidden passage.
Joe stared, his jaw dropping. "Holy… Adam. You were right."
"I told you," Adam said, a triumphant grin on his face. "My hunches are rarely wrong. Especially when it comes to secret supervillain lairs."
They stepped into the dimly lit passage. It led to a small, circular room. And in the center of that room, bathed in a soft, futuristic glow, was a chamber. A chamber filled with holographic displays, future technology, and a suit. A yellow suit. The Reverse-Flash suit.
" The Time Vault. It's even cooler in person. And way more terrifying. This is it. The smoking gun. Or, you know, the vibrating, time-traveling gun."
Joe walked slowly, his eyes wide with disbelief and horror. He saw the newspaper from the future, the headline screaming about "Flash Vanishes in Crisis." He saw the future tech, the impossible devices. And he saw the suit.
"He's from the future," Joe whispered, his voice hoarse. "And he's the Reverse-Flash. And he killed Nora."
"And he's been here, all along," Adam added, his voice grim. "Playing us. Manipulating Barry. This is his base of operations. His secret. And now, we found it."
They didn't touch anything. They just observed. They gathered the visual evidence. Joe took mental notes, his detective's brain already piecing together the puzzle. Adam, meanwhile, felt a surge of fear. They were in Thawne's lair. If he found them…
"We need to go," Adam whispered, pulling Joe back. "Now. Before he knows we were here. We have the proof. Now we need to figure out what to do with it."
They carefully closed the hidden passage, making sure to leave no trace of their presence. As they walked out of Wells's office, Adam felt a new weight on his shoulders. They had the truth. But the truth was dangerous. And Thawne was still out there, unaware that his secret had been compromised.
" This is it. The game has changed. We're not just reacting anymore; we're on the offensive. But against a speedster who can travel through time? This is going to be the hardest boss battle of my life. Good thing I have extra lives."
