Chapter 18: Chapter 18: The Reveal (to Joe) – (REMAKE)
Chapter 18: The Reveal (to Joe) – (REMAKE)
Adam found Joe in his office, late that night. The police station was quiet, save for the distant murmur of the dispatch radio. Joe was nursing a cup of lukewarm coffee, staring blankly at a whiteboard covered in theories about the Reverse-Flash.
"Hey, Joe," Adam said, his voice softer than usual. He closed the door behind him.
Joe looked up, startled. "Adam? What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be, you know, not dying somewhere?"
"Funny," Adam said, forcing a weak smile. "Look, I need to talk to you. Seriously. No jokes. No sarcasm. Just… truth."
Joe's brow furrowed. He put down his coffee. "That sounds ominous. What's going on?"
Adam took a deep breath. This was it. The biggest gamble he'd made since landing in this crazy universe. He couldn't tell Joe everything. The "from the future" part was too much, too unbelievable. But he could tell him enough. Enough to make him believe.
"It's about Wells," Adam began, his voice low. "Harrison Wells. He's… he's not who you think he is, Joe. He's the Reverse-Flash."
Joe stared at him, then burst out laughing. "Adam, what are you talking about? Wells is in a wheelchair! He's a genius! He's helping Barry!"
"I know what it sounds like," Adam said, his voice firm, cutting through Joe's disbelief. "I know it's crazy. But hear me out. Remember that hum I told you about? The one I heard in his office? The one I recorded?"
Joe's laughter died. He remembered. Adam had been insistent about it.
"I analyzed it, Joe," Adam continued, pulling out his flash drive. "It's… it's the Speed Force. Not Barry's. But a Speed Force. And it's coming from Wells. He's not paralyzed, Joe. He's faking it. He's the yellow blur. He's the one who killed Nora Allen."
Joe's face went pale. "Adam… you're talking about a man who's been a mentor to Barry, a friend to me. You're talking about a conspiracy."
"I know," Adam said, his voice filled with a raw honesty that surprised even himself. "And I wouldn't say it if I wasn't absolutely sure. Think about it, Joe. How does he always know exactly what Barry needs? How does he always seem to be one step ahead? How did he know about Peek-a-Boo's exact route, even when she changed it? He's manipulating everything. He's pushing Barry to get faster, not to save the city, but for his own agenda."
He played the recording from the flash drive. The faint, almost subliminal hum of the Speed Force was there, undeniable, beneath the static. Joe listened, his eyes wide, a dawning horror in them.
"And remember how I 'escaped' the Reverse-Flash?" Adam went on, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I didn't escape, Joe. He hit me. He killed me. And then I woke up. It's… it's complicated. But I have a… a knack. A very strange, very specific knack for sensing things. For seeing patterns. For knowing things I shouldn't. Call it an… intuitive ability. A very, very strong intuition."
He didn't mention the System. He didn't mention the lives. That was too much. But he laid out the evidence, the anomalies, the gut feelings that had been screaming at him for months.
Joe stood up, walking to the whiteboard, then back, running a hand through his hair. "Wells… the Reverse-Flash… it's impossible."
"Is it, Joe?" Adam challenged again, his voice gentle. "Or is it just… impossible to believe? You've been chasing this ghost for years. What if the ghost was always right there, in plain sight? What if he's been playing you all along?"
Joe looked at him, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear, anger, and a desperate need to believe. "Why are you telling me this, Adam? Why now?"
"Because he almost killed you, Joe," Adam said, his voice cracking slightly. "And he almost killed me. And he's going to hurt Barry. He's using him. And I can't… I can't just stand by and watch. I know this sounds crazy. But I need you to believe me. I need your help. We have to stop him."
Joe stared at the recording device, then at Adam. He saw the genuine fear in Adam's eyes, the raw honesty. He saw the conviction. And he remembered all the little things, the inconsistencies, the too-perfect timing, the unsettling calm of Dr. Wells.
He took a deep breath. "Okay, Adam. Okay. I don't know what the hell is going on. I don't know how you know all this. But… I believe you. We're going to figure this out. Together."
Adam felt a wave of relief wash over him. He hadn't broken the timeline. He had found an ally. A trusted ally. And now, they could fight back.
" This is it. The first step. Joe's in. Now, we just need to find the proof. The undeniable, in-your-face, 'Wells is a murderous time-traveler' kind of proof. This is going to be fun. And probably involve more near-death experiences for me. But hey, I've got lives. And a very good detective on my side."
