Chapter 17: The Trap – A Reverse-Flash Encounter (REMAKE)

The plan was simple. Or, as simple as anything involving a super-fast, time-traveling murderer could be. Team Flash had located a new metahuman, a teleporter named Shawna Baez (Peek-a-Boo), who was robbing armored trucks. Wells had proposed a trap, a specific route for an armored car, designed to funnel her into a controlled environment where Barry could apprehend her.

"It's foolproof," Wells declared, pointing to a holographic map. "She'll have no choice but to teleport into our containment field."

" Foolproof, huh? That's what they always say right before everything goes horribly, spectacularly wrong. Especially when the guy saying it is secretly the villain."

Adam felt a prickle of unease. Wells was too confident. Too precise. He knew this episode. He knew Wells would manipulate the situation. The trap wasn't just for Peek-a-Boo; it was for Barry. And maybe, just maybe, for anyone who got in the way. Like, say, a sarcastic, unkillable consultant.

"Are we sure about this route, Dr. Wells?" Adam asked, trying to sound genuinely concerned. "It seems… a little too obvious. And what if she has an accomplice? Or what if someone else shows up?" He looked pointedly at Wells, trying to convey his unspoken warning.

Wells's eyes met his, a flicker of something unreadable in their depths. "Mr. Stiels, I assure you, every variable has been accounted for."

"Right," Adam muttered. "Because variables never, ever go rogue. Especially in this city."

They deployed the trap. Barry was in position, ready to intercept Peek-a-Boo. Joe was coordinating from the comms. Adam was with Cisco and Caitlin in the Cortex, watching the monitors.

The armored car moved. Peek-a-Boo appeared, teleporting in and out, trying to get to the money. Barry engaged her, a red blur against her shimmering teleportation. It was going according to plan. Too well, in fact.

Then, the lights flickered in the Cortex. The monitors went static. A low hum filled the room, the same Speed Force hum Adam had detected from Wells's office.

"What's happening?" Caitlin exclaimed, frantically typing.

"Someone's jamming our comms!" Cisco yelled. "And the security feed!"

" Oh, you magnificent bastard. You're making your move."

Suddenly, a yellow blur streaked through the Cortex. It wasn't Barry. It was the Reverse-Flash. He moved with impossible speed, dismantling the equipment, smashing consoles, heading straight for the main power conduit.

"He's trying to cut us off!" Adam yelled, his voice strained. "He's trying to isolate Barry!"

The Reverse-Flash paused, turning his glowing red eyes on Adam. "You. You're a persistent anomaly, Mr. Stiels."

Adam felt a cold dread. He was exposed. Thawne knew. Or at least, he knew Adam was a problem. This wasn't just a random attack; it was personal.

The Reverse-Flash moved. Adam barely registered the yellow streak, the vibrating hand. He knew what was coming. He had three lives from Thawne. He had to make this one count. He needed a skill. Something to help him survive future encounters with this impossible speed.

He didn't try to fight. He couldn't. Instead, he focused on the sensation, the sheer speed of the attack, the way the air vibrated around Thawne. He tried to feel the movement, to understand it.

The Reverse-Flash slammed into him, a brutal, bone-jarring impact. Adam felt himself flying across the room, crashing through a glass partition, pain exploding through his body. Darkness.

[SYSTEM ALERT: DEATH DETECTED. CAUSE: BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA (REVERSE-FLASH).] [LIVES REMAINING: 2/3 (Current Life Activated)] [DEATHS ACHIEVED: 4/15 (Next System Level: Level 4)]

[SKILL ACQUISITION: 'ENHANCED EVASION' HAS BEEN UNLOCKED!] [DESCRIPTION: Improves the ability to anticipate and react to incoming attacks, granting a slight boost to evasive maneuvers.]

Adam gasped, his eyes snapping open. He was back in his apartment, disoriented but alive. His body ached, a phantom pain, but the memory of the impact, the sheer speed, was burned into his mind. He felt a new awareness, a subtle shift in his reflexes, as if his body was now primed to dodge.

" 'Enhanced Evasion'! Yes! This is exactly what I needed! Now I can actually try to not get hit next time. Thanks, Thawne, you homicidal maniac. You keep making me stronger."

He quickly changed, his heart still hammering. He raced back to S.T.A.R. Labs. The Cortex was a wreck. Cisco and Caitlin were trying to get the systems back online. Joe was there, looking furious. Barry was back, having apprehended Peek-a-Boo, but looking shaken by the Reverse-Flash's appearance.

"He was here," Barry whispered, his voice strained. "The yellow blur. He just… appeared. And then he hit Adam. He was gone before I could even react."

"Adam!" Joe exclaimed, rushing over. "You're alive! Again! How in the hell…?"

"I… I don't know, Joe," Adam feigned, rubbing his head. "One minute I was there, the next… I was just… gone. Like a really fast, really angry, yellow whirlwind picked me up and dropped me a few blocks away. Must be my 'enhanced common sense' kicking in, telling me to get out of the way of homicidal speedsters. Again."

He looked at Wells, who was calmly observing the damage, his face impassive. Wells met his gaze, and for a split second, Adam saw it: a flicker of triumph, quickly masked.

" He knew. He planned this. He wanted to push Barry. And he wanted to deal with me. He's playing a very dangerous game. And I'm going to expose him."

Adam felt a cold resolve settle in his chest. He had to tell Joe. He had to. The stakes were too high. Thawne was too dangerous. And Adam had just gained a skill that might actually help him survive the inevitable confrontation.
