Chapter 657: Chapter 657: Escalating Conflict
"Hurry up, are there any more dragon-slaying bolts? Shoot them quickly, this white dragon is about to give up," shouted an excited adventurer holding a tower shield, staring at the staggering white dragon before them.
"Three left."
"Then what are you waiting for? Load and fire them, don't hold back. If we kill this dragon, we can make up for all the money we've spent. We'll become heroes in our hometown."
"Hold on, you know how hard it is to string this bow," grumbled a burly man, his arms as thick as a regular person's waist.
In his hands was a nearly two-meter-long crossbow, and on his back were three dragon-slaying bolts, each as long as a spear. These were the smallest type of dragon-slaying crossbows, only capable of hunting juvenile white dragons—considered the lowest grade of dragon-slaying equipment. Yet even so, purchasing them had nearly exhausted the small adventuring party's funds.
This had been a collective decision by their group. The changing situation on the continent had been noticed even by mid-to-low-tier adventurers like themselves. They observed that more and more dragon hunters from other continents were appearing, making the wilderness between cities increasingly safer. The roaming ice and snow monsters, as well as dragon beasts, were being eradicated by powerful humans.
The safer conditions in the icefields gave this small adventuring party a bold idea they had never considered before: dragon hunting. If they could successfully hunt a white dragon and sell it, they would gain not only the profits from the dragon but also the prestige of being dragon slayers. This would ensure a comfortable life for the rest of their days, without ever needing to risk their lives again.
Thinking of the benefits of dragon slaying, the burly man handling the crossbow felt a burning excitement. Even just the fame from slaying a dragon could easily land him a prestigious job back home, like becoming the captain of a noble's guard.
"Die already, you wicked white dragon!" the burly man cursed fiercely at the heavily wounded, roaring white dragon, which was over ten meters long.
Before this encounter, they had no prior interaction with this white dragon. It had been lazily sleeping in its lair when they found it, having done nothing to provoke them. But what did that matter? Slaying white dragons was considered a politically correct act here; all white dragons were seen as evil and deserved death.
The juvenile white dragon, barely into adolescence, glared viciously at the eight-member adventurer team. It had four crossbow bolts embedded in its body, with light red dragon blood dripping from its wounds.
The injuries prevented it from healing, and the blood loss was draining its life force. It knew it didn't have long to live; it was going to die here.
With this realization, the dragon's gaze became fiercely aggressive. Even in death, it wouldn't let these humans have it easy. It turned its head and sprayed visible frost onto its wounds, freezing the flesh around the injuries to stop the bleeding.
Then, with a roar, it lunged forward aggressively. Its wings were injured, preventing it from flying away. Two warriors with tower shields braced themselves, faces flushed, as they pushed back against the dragon. Even clashing with a white dragon, which was considered weaker among dragons, was a grueling experience.
In the rear, a mage waved a staff, launching explosive fireballs that struck the dragon, leaving charred marks. This mage was a rare fire elementalist.
The humans shouted, the dragon roared, and the clash of swords and spells led to endless slaughter and death. As humans hunted dragons, dragons also slaughtered humans. On the subcontinent of Denapson, as each dragon fell, hundreds more humans became corpses. Dragon hunting came at a price. For every successful dragon hunt, many humans faced the wrath of dragons.
In the White Dragon Duchy, the bodies of dragon hunters were hung in prominent positions in towns, serving as a deterrent to other would-be hunters and showcasing the authority of the Ice Queen, Claudia.
Meanwhile, as the conflict raged on Denapson's subcontinent, Claudia continued to mobilize her forces under Muria's orders, without any sign of stopping. Snow gnolls, wyvern riders, frost-scaled land dragons, frost bears, ice-fire serpents... Various monster armies gathered under Claudia's command, advancing toward the fifteen northern duchies. The cloud of war loomed over the north.
The North Alliance's plan had no effect and only made the situation more chaotic. Now, three ancient crystal dragons were wreaking havoc in the human territories of the north, venting their rage.
Fortunately, several legendary heroes had crossed the sea to restrain these crystal dragons, preventing further casualties. Even so, the dukes of the north were left in turmoil.
Meanwhile, Claudia led her white dragon army, protected by an army of over a million monsters, advancing into the human duchies. Under such circumstances, no sane dragon hunter would dare provoke Claudia. Even a legend could be overwhelmed if faced with enough enemies, as their power was not infinite.
As Claudia waged war, Muria was not by her side. He had responded to the call of a silver dragon and traveled to the Kingdom of Tiago to help the silver dragons deal with troublesome church members.
"Muria," said the Silver Dragon Queen Elf, who greeted him as he emerged from the teleportation circle.
"Where are those clergy members?" Muria asked directly, aware that these individuals were trying to obstruct the silver dragons' investigation, wanting to cover up the incident. The silver dragons were hesitant to use force due to their perceived good intentions.
"They're still in my palace."
"Tell me the details."
"These clergy members approached me during a mobilization rally," Elf said with a look of helplessness. "I was rallying all the silver dragons and our armies to sweep out the dragon hunters in the country, to find the missing silver dragon and stolen dragon egg. But these humans came, offering to help investigate, asking us not to escalate the situation and wait for their findings."
"Utterly absurd," Muria said coldly.
