Chapter 658: Chapter 658: A Spear's End! The Fall of a Legend!
"Ten cardinals in red robes. So, if the silver dragons don't comply with your demands, are you planning to take action?" Muria asked calmly as he looked at the ten red-robed humans before him. Muria, familiar with these clergy members, knew that the gold-trimmed red robes they wore signified their high status within the clergy hierarchy—they were at the pinnacle of the priesthood.
"Who might you be?" The ten cardinals, who had been discussing how to calm the agitated silver dragons, stood up at once when Muria and the Red Dragon Queen entered. An elderly man glanced at the Silver Dragon Queen, seemingly expecting her to introduce Muria.
"Guess who I am," Muria said, his eyes glinting with golden light. The palpable dragon's aura filled the palace, where the human church delegation was housed. The air seemed to solidify, and the ten cardinals felt as if a mountain was pressing down on them.
"Are you His Highness Muria?" One of the cardinals, who had a weathered gaze but the youthful appearance of a young man, asked uncertainly. He felt the black-haired, golden-eyed young man before him looked familiar, as if he had seen his image somewhere before.
"So there are people on this continent who recognize me." Muria raised his eyebrows slightly in surprise, though it made sense. The powerful church's influence extended beyond just one continent, spreading almost worldwide, even if it wasn't always noticeable in many places.
"Your Highness, you're joking. Who wouldn't recognize you given your renown?" The cardinal, who appeared no older than thirty but was in fact much older, discreetly flattered Muria, having already identified his status and importance.
At the same time, this seasoned cardinal quietly informed the other nine cardinals of Muria's identity, preparing them for what lay ahead.
"Hmph." Muria's slight smirk indicated his awareness of their flattery, which he found unimpressive. "So, tell me, if the silver dragons don't stop their actions, are you planning to use force against us?"
"We have no such intentions. After all, you are the victims here," one of the cardinals quickly replied, shaking his head. They had no desire to confront the Kingdom of Tiago, the only nation established by silver dragons. Offending this country meant offending all silver dragons.
Among the metallic dragons, while the golden dragon lineage was the strongest, the silver dragons had the greatest affinity among dragons. Due to their natural charm, every female silver dragon had numerous male suitors, and each one was considered a beauty among dragons. Offending the silver dragons was tantamount to offending the metallic dragons, and even other dragon species.
"Then why are you all here? Ten cardinals—quite a grand spectacle," Muria's gaze turned cold. These ten legendary priests seemed weak, easily suppressed by a few ancient silver dragons.
But as the most devout followers of their gods, these priests were embodiments of divine will, representatives in the mortal world.
In critical moments, they could summon the avatars of their gods, whose power was immeasurable. Thus, these ten legends were a significant nuisance to Muria.
In extreme cases, a single legendary priest, sacrificing their life and soul, could summon a divine avatar capable of destroying the Kingdom of Tiago.
"We are merely trying to urge restraint, asking you to remain calm. If the metallic dragons also join, the conflicts on this continent will worsen, leading to more deaths."
A cardinal frowned. The key issue was that most of the casualties in this turmoil were humans, who were primarily believers of the gods. These believers were essential for maintaining the gods' power base. A few deaths were tolerable, but mass casualties could even affect the gods.
"We will fully assist in finding those who harmed your kind, the kidnapped silver dragon, and the stolen dragon eggs," another cardinal promised.
"So you want us to sit by while our kin are killed and kidnapped, our offspring stolen, and do nothing but wait for your investigation?" Flames seemed to burn in Muria's eyes. "Don't you think this demand is absurd?"
"Please trust our investigative abilities. It won't take long; we will surely give you an answer."
"How long do you need? Be specific," Muria's voice turned cold. "Three days. Can you recover the kidnapped silver dragon and the stolen dragon eggs in that time?"
"..."
A silence fell. None of the cardinals could guarantee such a result. With the current advanced teleportation systems, who knew where the silver dragon and eggs had been taken? It was impossible to retrieve them in just three days.
"So you can't recover them, can you? Then why are you still here? Leave; we dragons will handle our own matters," Muria restrained his urge to lash out verbally. The human race was too vast, with some elements needing to be opposed and others that could be allies.
"Please believe us just this once. The conflicts on this continent cannot be allowed to escalate further. Enough people and dragons have died already."
"You are humans!" Muria glared at the cardinals, the flames in his eyes intensifying, casting a stifling aura over the palace. "Don't tell me you're unaware of what happens to a captured female silver dragon at the hands of humans."
What fate awaited a captured silver dragon? The existence of relentless elf-slave hunters provided a clue. Many high-ranking humans, to satisfy their desires for dominance, loved acquiring powerful non-human beings to display their authority.
The cardinals sighed softly. Muria was far more assertive than the silver dragons. After only a brief conversation, he was already asking them to leave. They couldn't confront these dragons over some rogue dragon hunters.
"Please, when investigating, show leniency to the common people. They are innocent and know nothing," one cardinal pleaded.
"I will consider it," Muria replied, sparks of electricity crackling around him as he prepared to use force if necessary.
However, the cardinals, sensing his intent to act, agreed to leave immediately. Had they not, they would have continued to argue indefinitely.
"Investigate thoroughly, and do not hesitate. We must quickly find the missing dragon and the stolen eggs," Muria instructed Silver Dragon Queen Elf.
Elf felt a bit embarrassed at Muria playing the bad cop for her. Hearing his words, she nodded in understanding.
"I'm planning to visit the human territories," Muria announced.
"For what purpose?" the queen asked instinctively.
"I've heard that some human legends plan to team up against that crystal ancient dragon. I've been asked by the dragon clan to intervene and support the ancient dragon, which is nearing a berserk state."
Muria smiled, pulling out a dragon scale resembling crystal, playing with it in his hand.
Claudia had established her position on the Deprosen subcontinent even before Muria arrived, mainly due to being adopted by a legendary crystal dragon. Behind her stood a powerful clan of crystal dragons, supporting her rise.
Now, this clan had reached out to Muria through Claudia, requesting his intervention, potentially supporting the ancient crystal dragon currently losing control.
"I'll be off then." Muria transformed into a streak of golden light, soaring into the sky and vanishing from the Silver Dragon Queen's sight.
...
Amidst the swirling cold, the sound of swords clashing, dragon roars, and human battle cries echoed—a legendary battlefield in the sky. Warriors with giant shields, sword saints wielding blades, archers drawing their bows, mages wielding staffs, and a priest responsible for healing—a standard adventuring party, but all members were legends. Their opponent was a heavily wounded crystal dragon, not the first human team to confront it.
The crystal ancient dragon's rampage had escalated, recently killing a legendary paladin. This situation was intolerable for human legends, who, after deliberation, decided to face potential dragon retribution to kill the nearly mad ancient dragon.
"Despicable humans, you will all die!" The dragon roared furiously, its frost domain spreading outwards, covering a radius of 300 meters. This domain allowed the dragon to attack from any position within it, weakening any external attacks before they could reach it.
Unfortunately, the domain had been shrinking due to prolonged battles, as it had once covered a kilometer radius. Now reduced to 100 meters, the sword saint's sword energy and the mage's spells could easily breach its defenses, wounding the dragon.
...
Guided by the crystal dragon scale in his hand, Muria quickly located the embattled ancient dragon. As he arrived at the battlefield's edge, he saw a human warrior sever the dragon's forelimb, followed by a massive column of flames striking the dragon, slamming it into a mountain.
"Get away!" Seeing both sides of the battle, Muria did not hesitate. It was clear whom he should help. As the sword saint seemed poised to attack again, Muria summoned his Sun-Slaying Spear, hurling it toward the sword saint. The spear tore through the sky, leaving a golden streak.
"Look out!" Four voices shouted in unison.
Compared to the nearly 200-meter-long spear, the sword saint's human form was pitifully small. Seeing the spear coming, the sword saint's face grew grim, and he immediately used a burst secret technique.
Blazing battle energy enveloped him, making his body appear like a humanoid torch. The accumulated battle energy surged into his sword, forming a hundred-meter-long light blade. With an unyielding spirit, he struck the approaching spear.
Boom!
A tremendous explosion rang out. Unsurprisingly, the sword saint's light blade shattered within a heartbeat, disintegrating into particles of light.
The sword saint's small form was brushed aside by the spear, leaving no trace of him in the sky, as if he had never existed.
The sudden
turn of events stunned the legendary adventurers. They had not noticed Muria until he hurled the Sun-Slaying Spear, killing the sword saint.
"Who are you? Why are you attacking us?" the warrior with the heavy shield demanded, while the mage began casting a spell, and the ranger, partially hidden, drew their bow.
