Ch. 119
Chapter 119: Darksun Contamination
Unlike Bell Moonshadow and Vivian, who were on high alert, Janna was staring unblinkingly at the red text on the Quest Panel, an alarm sounding in her heart.
"Aph, does this Shadow Rift carry the aura of Darksun Contamination?"
"It does, and it’s very strong! Though they've concealed it perfectly, there's no mistaking this stench—Aph would never get it wrong!"
That shouldn’t be the case.
According to the bounty information from Blackbone Grove, the remnants of the Darksun Church should be hiding deep within the Misty Forest. Could it be that Blackbone Grove did this on purpose?
Her heart trembled slightly, but Janna quickly shook her head, dismissing the thought. After all, within the Wizard World, Janna didn’t believe that Blackbone Grove would make such a fundamental mistake.
The Darksun Church was the common enemy of all transcendents.
Besides, they had just performed a Blood Sacrifice Ritual on a low-level apprentice from Blackbone Grove.
The two sides were in a state of irreconcilable hostility—there was no way Blackbone Grove would cooperate.
That left only two possibilities:
First, the intelligence passed from Blackbone Grove was incorrect.
The Darksun Cultists weren’t hiding inside the Misty Forest but rather outside.
Second, the Darksun Cultists used some means to teleport from inside the Misty Forest to its outskirts.
Moreover, they had chosen an extremely well-hidden rift as their hiding place.
And coincidentally, that rift had been discovered by the three of them.
"Is this the power of [Luck]?"
Looking at the stat on the Quest Panel, which stood higher than her other attributes, Janna felt a complicated surge of emotions.
"Boom—"
While Janna was pondering, the battle on the other side had already grown intense.
Vivian, in particular, was fully utilizing her advantage as an Elemental Wizard Apprentice, unleashing massive ice spells like they cost nothing.
Although it drained her Magic Power tremendously, the effect was remarkable—several Carrion Maned Hounds had already been frozen in ice.
In contrast, Bell Moonshadow, due to her affinity, found her Shadow Witchcraft less effective against fellow Shadow Creatures like the Carrion Maned Hounds, lacking the same lethality as Vivian's elemental magic.
"By my will, I command you—summon, Flame Guardian."
Flames burst forth, the heat surging. Before the others could react, a new elemental creature, roughly half the height of a person and shaped like a fireball, was summoned by Janna.
"Enyard, don’t let them approach this place."
Upon receiving the command, the Flame Guardian immediately leapt past Bell Moonshadow and Vivian, puffed up its cheeks, and blasted a stream of flame. Working in tandem with Bell Moonshadow’s shadow bindings, it swiftly took down two Carrion Maned Hounds.
"Janna, just how many Contract Summoned Creatures do you have?"
Perched on Janna’s shoulder was the Celestial Finch; floating behind her was the Hundred-Eyed Specter; and now this newly summoned Flame Guardian. In an instant, Janna’s side had six active combatants.
"Seal your hearing!"
With no time to answer Vivian’s question, Janna cast Siren Chanting as the Flame Guardian displayed its prowess.
"La la—la la la——"
The enchanting sound waves again proved remarkably effective on low-level Shadow Creatures.
Under the interference of mental hypnosis, the Carrion Maned Hounds grew increasingly sluggish in their movements.
Seeing this, Bell Moonshadow formed two Shadow Blades with her hands.
Like a phantom, she dashed beyond the protective Barrier, slashing through the Carrion Maned Hounds one after another.
"Bell, don’t pursue them!"
As the slaughter tilted heavily in their favor, several Carrion Maned Hounds melted into shadows and fled into the rift.
Seeing Bell Moonshadow preparing to follow, Janna immediately sent a telepathic warning to stop her.
"What is it?"
Receiving Janna’s transmission, Bell Moonshadow used Wizard's Hand to retrieve the Shadow Magic Cores dropped by the Carrion Maned Hounds and returned to Janna’s side.
"We should be heading back soon."
Back?
After lifting the magic sealing her ears, Janna’s words brought confusion to Bell Moonshadow and Vivian.
But looking at Janna’s exceptionally calm eyes and uncharacteristic demeanor, neither questioned her. Instead, they both silently chose to obey.
"Then let’s go. This trip wasn’t in vain—we earned over ten Academic Credits in one go."
Gently taking Janna’s arm, Vivian, always the cooperative one, followed her lead despite her own internal doubts.
Creak—creak—
In the quiet night, only the sound of twigs snapping underfoot echoed.
Not until they exited the bounds of the Misty Forest did Janna, who had remained silent the entire time, once more communicate telepathically with the Hundred-Eyed Specter:
"Are those prying gazes still there?"
"They’re gone now, Master."
Exhaling lightly, only after receiving confirmation from the Hundred-Eyed Specter did Janna finally relax her tensed nerves.
"Are you okay, Janna?"
"Shh."
Even though the Hundred-Eyed Specter had confirmed the prying presence was gone, Janna still gestured for silence as a precaution to Vivian.
Only when they were fully within the safety of White Coral Academy did Janna suddenly grab the other two, speaking in a whisper only they could hear:
"The people from the Darksun Church are most likely hiding inside that Shadow Rift from earlier."
"!?"
Eyes narrowing, both Vivian and Bell Moonshadow, already suspecting Janna’s odd behavior, saw the unbelievable truth on her face.
"But according to the information from Blackbone Grove, those Darksun Cultists had clearly fled to the depths of the Misty Forest—you mean to say, they escaped?"
"I’m not sure why they’re there, but my Contract Summoned Creature can sense the aura of Darksun Contamination from that Shadow Rift. The Celestial Finch, a Holy Light-type spirit highly sensitive to contamination, curses, and plagues, has never failed in detecting pollution.”
To some extent, the Celestial Finch’s sensitivity and aversion to [Contamination] even surpass those of several First Tier Wizards within Turin.
Of course, that’s also because most First Tier Wizards in White Coral, Blackbone Grove, and Mist Tower are aligned with dark-attribute laws.
For Darksun Cultists, who have no Magical Energy fluctuations in their bodies and are extremely skilled in concealment, as long as they hide in the Misty Forest filled with dark-attribute particles, they won’t be easily discovered.
"This mission is worth a top-tier apprentice Witch Tool—what luck to stumble upon it!"
Vivian, who had never doubted Janna’s words, grew visibly excited just thinking about it.
"But what should we do next? Should we call for reinforcements?"
"Yes, we need reinforcements."
"Then who should we find? Most of the Third Tier Apprentices I know are deep inside the Misty Forest. By the time we contact them, it’ll be too late—"
Several names flashed through Vivian’s mind, but in the end, she couldn’t find a suitable candidate.
Aside from the inconvenience of contacting them, Vivian also didn’t want Janna’s major credit to be shared with others.
"Vivian, you’ve got it wrong. The reinforcements we need aren't senior apprentices. What we need is—"
"The Headmaster."
