Chapter 486: 485: Boom
From the moment he decided not to abandon Selene and chose to protect her, a part of Corey knew that there was a high possibility of him not being able to protect Selene.
All the calculations, hypotheses, and simulations his main consciousness and stars of consciousness had made all showed that the chances of Selene dying as he fought Aethara were extremely high.
If Aethara desired Selene's death, all she had to do was find a way to separate Selene from him, and if she played her cards right and chose not to underestimate him or look down on him, she could kill Selene with ease.
Either by luck or by Aethara's precise planning after studying him, she had found a good way to separate Selene from him by utilising the horde of wooden abominations.
She made sure that he went deep into the horde of wooden abominations before telling the wooden abominations to self-destruct.
Whether Aethara knew that such actions would separate Selene from him, he did not know, but it had worked.
Aethara had been careful when dealing with him because she could sense just how abnormal Corey was.
After Corey almost killed her, she was a little bit wary of the unique skills and abilities Corey might have, and because of this, she decided to use her domain to fight Corey, push him to his limit, and then figure out his abilities and how to counter his abilities.
If Corey knew of Aethara's thoughts as he fought her domain, he would have laughed in disbelief and self-mockery.
He was a Tier 2, and despite his uniqueness, the abilities he had, and his status as a Demi-Paragon, there was no way he could face a being that was comparable to a powerful Tier 6.
Of all the skills he had, the only skill Corey knew that Aethara had to be wary of was the Paragon Martial Arts. It was the only skill that could kill her if she was careless, however, Corey chose not to use the techniques of the Paragon Martial Arts for several reasons.
One of them was because the distance between him and Aethara was far, and she was not like the Capra King who would willingly take on his attack.
If she wanted, she could just choose to dodge it, and Corey would just have wasted his mana and mental energy, and he would have injured himself because he used a technique of the Paragon Martial Arts.
Another reason why he chose not to use the Paragon Martial Arts was because he had a feeling that he should keep it a secret and not use it unless absolutely necessary.
Apart from all of these, another thing that led to Selene's death was that despite all that he did, she remained unconscious and did not wake up.
Corey had tried waking her up by speaking into her mind, healing her with his dream energy, and even deliberately shaking her even when he was protecting himself from the attacks of Aethara's Imperium.
However, despite doing all of these, Selene never woke up, and Corey realized that the reason was related to Aethara.
She was interfering with Selene's consciousness through her Imperium, and Corey had no idea how to stop Aethara.
Assuming Selene had woken up, she would have been able to fend for herself, and the burden on Corey would have lessened since he would have been able to make a plan that involved her.
However, Corey's eyes contained a frustrating glint along with a tinge of anger as he stared at Selene's corpse.
Corey could make out the unmistakable saber hole in her heart and neck, and Corey was certain that Selene was dead without a doubt.
'I expected this… but it's still frustrating… very frustrating.'
Corey clenched his fists, and then he felt the world spin before his eyes.
'Ah, shit.'
Corey cursed inwardly, and then he felt himself fall to his knees.
Thud
Corey inhaled and exhaled deeply while trying to heal the injury that was extremely close to his heart.
However, when Corey used Dream Healing on the injury, he found out that it was extremely difficult to heal. Aethara had infused the power of rot into his body and with every second that passed, it was spreading to the left side of his body while trying to reach his heart.
Because his heart was not that of a human's but a Void Phoenix, the rot found it difficult to approach his heart and infect it. However, given enough time, a few minutes at most, it would reach his heart and Corey would definitely die.
'I need more Dream Energy to remove the rot in me completely.'
Just as Corey had this thought, he saw a pair of fair and beautiful legs covered in crimson vines before him, and Corey slowly looked up. Continue reading stories on empire
"You fought well… You interested me… and that is a major compliment from me."
Aethara's voice flowed into his ears, and just as his bloodied mouth parted open to speak, his pure white pupils shook and he quickly rolled to the side.
"Ughhh."
Corey groaned in pain while holding his heart, but without wasting a single second, his eyes which now had a golden triangle in them glowed and the golden triangles rotated.
The instant the golden triangles rotated, Corey vanished. What appeared in his place was the severed root of the Tree of Rot that had tried to kill Selene.
In less than a fraction of a second, after he vanished, a saber appeared and split the root and ground in two.
SHING
"Your eyes… Your eyes are the problem… Without them, you'd be dead by now… I hate them."
Aethara's voice resounded across her Imperium, and Corey who was now approximately a hundred meters away from her held his heart with a pained expression, however, a light smile could be seen on his face.
'So, she knows huh.'
'Well… Nina said that the Paragon Ancestors always advise young Paragons and Demi-Paragons like me to always pick the Tri-Pupil Eyes before any other Paragon trait… Now, I think I know why.'
Corey coughed out a mouthful of black blood, and then he quickly looked up. His golden triangular pupils reflected the image of Aethara who was approaching him with slow and steady footsteps, however, she was anything but slow.
With every step she took, she was shortening the distance between them by ten meters.
Corey chuckled, "Can I say something before you kill me?"
"No… I'm not interested."
Aethara replied indifferently, and Corey chuckled with a light smile.
"Now, I bore you huh…"
The instant Corey said these words, Aethara snapped her head towards the Tree of Rot with furrowed brows, and Corey snapped his fingers.
The moment Corey snapped his fingers, Aethara's eyes widened in pure horror and Corey smiled widely while speaking softly.
"Boom."
"NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"
