Chapter 120: Lightning Lycan King: Part Six
The Lightning Lycan King was a mutant wolf- it had strong hind legs but its forelegs were about as thin and skinny as that of a human's. Because of this, it jumped around on its hind legs like a kangaroo. If anything, this sight would be in any other circumstance quite funny to watch, but there was nothing amusing about the kind of damage it was dealing.
It was a good thing that Fang Yuan had already weakened the majority of the forces that they were dealing with, otherwise they would be overrun by now for sure. But, even with that in mind, they were just barely hanging on.
"Clan head, we need to kill the Thunder Crown Wolf," Fang Yuan said. Without dealing with it, their hands would be tied when dealing with the Lightning Lycan King. It likely knew that already, which is why it had not committed itself to the fighting fully.
"It isn't at the front lines yet," the clan head said, gritting his teeth. Without that, there was little way for them to get through the massive number of ordinary wolves, Hundred and Thousand Beast Kings that surrounded it.
This was a hammer-and-anvil tactic, with the Thunder Crown Wolf serving as a stationary threat, ready to leap in the moment the Lightning Lycan King was threatened, with the Lightning Lycan King and its allies slowly whittling down the other end of their defenses.
Slowly but surely, they would end up falling.
Destruction was already spreading through the battlefield.
"Lord Fang Yuan he-" a Gu Master barely got these words out of his mouth before wolf fangs wrapped around his throat, dragging him outside the walls.
Some distance away, Fang Zheng was having trouble dealing with the wolves. Although he had greater primeval essence than one would expect with the Four Flavors Liquor Worm, it was still not enough to keep with the fighting.
In another corner, Li Mei screamed as a wolf nearly gnawed off her leg. She would normally be conscripted to be a logistics Gu Master, but with the recent loss of so many fighters the clan wanted all hands on deck.
Another wolf jumped out at her, and would've succeeded in dragging her away if she had not been saved by a swift moonblade. The wolf that had been struck did not die, speaking to the low power of the moonblade sent, but it had been gravely wounded enough that it turned back.
"Come on!" a familiar voice called out to her. She turned to see Yu Sai offering her a hand, barely pulling her away in time.
Both of them then shot out moonblades to clear the area.
However, the reprieve was short-lived, as there were too many for them to handle.
In a different location, Gu Yue Yao Le was patching up some injured Gu Masters.
"Young Missy, you should get away..." one of the injured warriors said as he limped away. "If you die... what will your grandmother do...?"
"It's no problem," Yao Le said, thumping her chest heroically. "The wolves in this area have been killed. And I couldn't just stand back and watch as... eek!"
From the surrounding tree line, a large figure emerged. The surrounding wolves, were, as a matter of fact indeed dead thanks to the efforts of Fang Yuan and the other elders, but it was not a wolf that had staggered out.
"What's a bear doing here?" Yao Le muttered as the animal roared. It had clearly been starving for quite a while, and upon the sight of a tasty young girl before it, it had already begun salivating.
Had it followed the trail of the wolf pack, hoping to pick up on their remains like a vulture?
It didn't matter what the reason was, as the bear launched itself at Yao Le. What mattered was getting away.
"Grandma, save me!" she shrieked as she ran, all traces of earlier valor completely gone.
Similar situations were occurring all across the battlefield.
So many people in need, yet Fang Yuan, even with his greater strength, could not do much to shift the tide of battle now.
Unless...
His will went into this aperture to find Charity Gu. He was now a Human Path Master, and had some understanding of what this gu worm did.
Since he couldn't be everywhere, and the tide of battle had changed like this, there was only one option to go forward with- he would need to activate it and see if it truly worked the way his instincts told him.
He activated Charity Gu, and at the same time, activated Moonlight Plate Armor Gu.
What was Charity Gu's effect? It was to share the beneficial effects of other gu worms upon the user to other people. It could not share the power of offensive gu worms, but it could share the power of other effects with others.
As for the range of effect, Fang Yuan was unsure of that, or the extent of the effect shared. His instinctual knowledge could only go so far at the Master level.
The effect was instantaneous- as for range, everyone in Gu Yue village was now cloaked in an aura of blue plate armor.
"Aieeee!" Yao Le screamed as the bear swiped at her, only to break its forepaw, and then its teeth as it couldn't get through the effect of the defensive gu worm. She was then able to get out of the way as it turned tail to nurse its injuries.
A wolf launched itself at Yu Sai and Li Mei, but similarly met with a sad fate.
A Hundred Beast King launched an attack at a Rank 2 Gu Master, only for it to do nothing.
All around the village, people suddenly found that the enemy attacks were doing little to them as they had some strange blue force protecting them. As if they were using a gu worm, but it did not take any of their primeval essence.
This effect was more than enough to change the flow of battle. Hundred Beast Kings were beaten back, holes in the wall were repaired, and even another Thousand Beast King met its end as an elder killed it with ease.
'What kind of effect is this!?' Fang Yuan screamed within his mind. 'Isn't heaven supposed to be fair and balanced? This is one of the most unbalanced gu worms I've ever laid my hands on!'
This effect and its range was phenomenal. The Gu Yue village could easily conquer the other two villages if it had this gu worm. There were many righteous and even demonic sects which would kill to have this kind of gu worm. To be able to give an army the defensive power of a Rank 4 gu worm- it was incredible! This was not just giving his gu worm's effect to other people, but actually amplifying it over the entire army!
Furthermore, Fang Yuan found that his primeval essence was depleting steadily from use of Moonlight Plate Armor Gu. Even if the other people were attacked, it didn't take away anything other than a steady supply of primeval essence from him. Granted, this defense could be broken, but he wouldn't have to endure the backlash in that case.
Then again, upon further reflection, perhaps this was heaven's way of balancing it out. After all, who better to give it to than Fang Yuan, who would be the least likely to ever use it.
He then had an idea and activated Doctor Gu as well, casting a healing effect on himself.
This also resonated throughout the battlefield. Doctor Gu's healing ability was phenomenal. A Gu Master who had lost his hand found it regrowing, another whose abdomen had been opened by a wolf claw found it closing up on its own, and the medicine hall found that the patients waiting had been somehow fixed all on their own.
By this point, Fang Yuan's primeval essence had run out. To maintain the Rank 5 Charity Gu for so long was not easy with Rank 4 primeval essence, though its primeval essence expenditure was surprisingly low. He had made a mistake advancing it to Rank 5 so fast- it increased its activation cost, but he was only using it with a Rank 4 and Rank 3 gu worm, so it did not need to be Rank 5.
Then again, its range might've been limited in that case if it was still Rank 4.
Mission Successful!
Saved Gu Yue Yao Le from the bear.
