Chapter 83: Combat Test [1]
[Number of Participants: 70]
"We are really the minority…" I sighed in disappointment as I saw the number of participants.
Those were the people who chose the combat profession as their primary, and out of around 1000 Exalted, we were only 70!
'Screw all those cowards! When I fail in saving your fucking world you will be next!'
"It's more than I expected… No sane person would like risking their life and fighting except like us." Selene joked, but my mood was still bad even though I didn't show it.
Why wouldn't it when we were less than half the number in the original novel? That fucking butterfly effect!
I leaned back in the seat as my gaze shifted to Arthur and Zephyr, who were arguing about who will become the apex, and Liora who was just having fun watching them.
'I wonder what their relationship was in the original novel after the free chapters.'
My gaze returned to the glowing Selene beside me as I asked: "So… how did you end up here? Wasn't your father overprotective?"
She let out a sigh. "Well, he really didn't want me to be here." She shook her head. "But the government suddenly sent someone that said they can't protect me forever and I have to gain some experience."
'Oh… they are scared that she wouldn't survive if she was left alone suddenly.'
I understood their logic. The land of challenges left something that would stay in Eldoria for a long time.
Fear.
It turned out that Long Wei was a tier 6 powerhouse in one of the strongest clans in the human kingdom, Long Clan.
Also Jaxon was confirmed to be a Tier 6 general in the demons' army.
In the end, they both got kidnapped and turned into Tier 2. That place didn't care about morality, gender, age, talent, or even race.
Thus, they probably feared that Selene would end up in a situation where she would need to survive without help or experience.
She was a dragon girl, a valuable future ally that would help them against the demons.
"But…" A smile tugged at her lips as she leaned close to me and whispered: "They allowed him to give me some favouritism."
My eyes widened slightly.
'Favouritism in Elyndra?'
The idea felt unreal, but considering her race, it didn't seem too abnormal.
For a moment, I wondered if Arthur had some favouritism, but unlike Selene, he wasn't hiding his wings, so it was unlikely.
*DING!*
"It's starting. We'll continue later." She said excitingly as a big screen materialized in the middle of the preparation room.
It showed a wide circled arena and above it there was a name written behind a picture of a man.
"...."
"Oh Ray, it's you! Selene shouted as she looked at me with her shining eyes.
Everyone in the room looked at me, some with envy, like Arthur and Zephyr, and some with pity for being the first.
"Well… I have to go now." I stood up and looked at the screen as, behind my name, 2 words kept appearing and disappearing instead of each other.
They were "Monster" and "Student", which were what I was going to fight first.
After a moment, it settled on "Student" then another person appeared behind my image.
"Hoho! We must be blessed to be chosen in the first round!" The guy on the screen shouted at the end of the room.
His name was Long Lei. He had sharp features with long purple hair and a pair of glowing purple eyes.
When he said "We" he probably didn't include me, but the big purple serpent wrapped around his arm.
'A spirit, huh?'
I couldn't help but imagine what my spirit would look like. She would definitely be more beautiful than that serpent.
'Her time will come eventually. I can feel that I only need less than a week.'
Shaking my head, I said farewell to my friends and left the preparation room, following Long Lei who opened the door leading to the arena.
•••
"May our fight be fair and great!" Long Lei bowed slightly like the Chinese warriors I had seen in my past life.
"I hope you don't hold back against me." I bowed to him as I scanned the arena.
It was a wide marble arena in a circle shape. Above it, there were many people watching from seats surrounded by barriers.
Everyone was allowed to watch, and it wasn't only here, but even outside Elyndra.
There were many entities in Eldoria watching us to find young talents, like the royal families and the guilds, but I didn't have to worry about that. I didn't have anything to hide anyway.
Instinctively, my eyes landed on someone in a golden seat. He was a man with deep blue eyes and short hair, with a light blue beard on his face.
'Kyle Lunaris.'
He was supposed to be Selene's father, but for some reason, he was glaring at me dangerously.
'Ohhh… don't tell me he is that type of fathers, hehe.'
He probably hated when his daughter talked with boys. But I didn't pay any mind for that. He couldn't harm me for no reason here.
I shifted my gaze to Long Lei as the timer between us began to reach the end.
The rules were simple. We would fight until one of us lost the ability to fight or when he gave up and the other accepted his surrender.
I looked at the timer and focused on the number.
3
2

*BAM!*
Immediately, I jumped into the air, dodging a purple lightning ball that the serpent spat at me.
My mask began to cover my lower face as unleashed my fear pressure.
It clashed with his aura pressure, but it was visible that he was losing.
"You aren't that bad." He laughed as he covered his body in lightning and charged at me, but suddenly—!
*SLASH!*
A wide cut appeared on his neck. With wide eyes, he dashed backward as the place he stood on earlier got covered in cut marks.
The serpent licked his neck and healed it. Long Lei didn't have any fear in his eyes, but the corners of his lips curled into a smile instead.
"You have an invisible power! I understand now."
Purple lightning erupted out of his body, destroying all the wind attacks I sent. Then he charged at me again.
But unfortunately for him, I wasn't a ground fighter.
I made a backflip in the middle of the air, dodging his flying kick, then teleported far away to dodge a bunch of lightning projectiles.
"Space affinity!"
"Did you just notice?" I mocked him as I turned upside down and dodged a lightning spear.
I was using gravity to float in the air and phantom wind to make invisible slabs for movement.
This test wasn't about just winning, but also performance. In other words, I needed to show off a little.
Our fight continued for a few minutes. All the time, I had only sent a few wind slashes and dodged.
"Stop running… haa… and fight me!" Long Lei shouted as he punched the air and sent a lightning fist toward me.
I dodged it easily and mocked: "Why would I? I can stay like this and still win! Hahaha!"
He gritted his teeth but didn't charge at me. His serpent made a lightning barrier around him then he sat on the ground.
'Not a muscle head, but that won't work.'
He was restoring his mental power and mana, probably thinking that I had no strong attacks and my aether would end inevitably before falling to the ground.
Unknown to him, I wasn't joking when I said I can stay like that and still win.
"Tsss*
"Hmmm?"
His serpent suddenly rubbed its head on his face. He looked at the serpent in confusion, then noticed something red on his clothes.
His nose was bleeding aggressively.
Feeling a hint of power entering my body, I smirked under my mask.
It was finally starting.
