Chapter 185: Strange World
Kael and Chloe landed on the land away from the large lake that connected to the portal.
They looked behind them and were able to see the current predicament of many aquatic creatures right now.
Most of these aquatic creatures had not yet reached the power level that would allow them to transform into a humanoid form.
All of them rushed through the portal, probably thinking that this was going to be a world of water, but it wasn't.
The lake could only contain so many before things started to get out of hand.
The aquatic lions and some serpents were able to crawl out of the large lake and run off into the distance.
The rest of the aquatic who -without a humanoid form- had no way of traveling on land, had to stay within the confines of the lake.
They could either stay or return to the main world, the portal was still open after all.
All watched as water splashed high into the sky as an innumerable amount of fish trashed around within the lake out of frustration.
"Well, that eliminates most of your competition," Chloe commented. She intentionally used the word 'your', implying that this was all about Kael.
At this point, she didn't even find the heavenly beacon as appealing as before. It didn't matter who got the heavenly beacon at the end, something strange was bound to happen.
Meanwhile, Kael was frowning deeply. He was looking at the lake and the scene of so many water splashes but his mind wasn't there.
He looked up to the artificial sky, not able to see any flaws. It looked just like the real sky, the only way to check if it was real was to fly up and check.
Still, this wasn't what was bothering Kael, it was the suppression of his Fortune Lion's powers as soon as he passed through the portal.
The power of luck which had always been set on passive mode, a power that had been subtly influencing Kael's success and was partly responsible for him surviving for so long. This power was being suppressed at the moment.
It wasn't a simple suppression, no, Kael felt like the power of fortune was being strangled within him and whatever was strangling it intended very much to kill it.
However, Kael's halfway to tier 4 power level was enough to counter the suffocating feeling. If he had been a tier 2 lion, his power of fortune would have been snuffed out completely.
The suppression was brutal and absolute, Kael couldn't even spur it into an active state.
"This place has its own rules, its own luck has been set," Kael muttered with a deep frown. He couldn't see how this was good.
If there was a superior source of fortune power out there, actively suppressing all foreign fortune power, then it wasn't a good thing.
"The creator of this place definitely didn't want anyone to find whatever he was hiding here, at least, not us," Chloe said after listening to Kael's words.
It was a reasonable conclusion. This place had been so hidden and only opened up mysteriously at his time. And now, the luck factor was completely cut off and replaced by something else.
"It's possible that someone was meant to find this place and the luck was overturned just to help this person out," Chloe said.
"That person might be in this pocket dimension already, who knows," She added.
Kael looked at her with a faint glow in his eye. A smile crept on his face but he hid it almost immediately.
Kael had the craziest thought at the moment, 'What if I'm that person?'
Of course, he didn't utter these words, it would have been better if something like this was confirmed first before talking.
'Even if it wasn't meant for me, I'll make sure to take it by force,' Kael thought with a ruthless glint flashing across his eyes.
"Let's hurry," He said and started moving in a particular direction at random. The area beyond the lake was one of sparse trees and flat ground, similar to the wild plains Kael had grown up in.
Far into the distance, were the sky and the land connected to create a beautiful horizon, nothing else could be seen.
It didn't take long for them to walk that they finally found trouble, or perhaps trouble finally found him.
A water lion, tier 3, just like them. He stood before Kael and Chloe while baring his fangs in a low growl.
The water rose from the ground and spiraled around the water lion. It was clear that the lion was intentionally being hostile and would attack at any moment.
Kael raised his eyebrow, wondering what was causing this.
It wasn't like this was still an ordinary lion with a limited amount of thinking capacity. This was clearly a powerful lion with a working brain, why would it do this to itself?
He should have just minded his business and moved on.
Space twisted as a long vertical space blade formed in front of Kael. Before the water lion could react, the blade flashed forward, appearing and disappearing like the blade of the Grim Reaper.
The water lion's eyes trembled heavily before the light of life faded from them. As he stood there, a thin red line appeared on his head and stretched all the way back to his hind.
It was a clean cut that split his body into two. It wasn't two equal parts but it was a clean cut regardless.
The left side of his body began to fall to the left side and the right side fell to the right. He was cut cleanly into two.
Chloe shuddered, the ease with which Kael killed this water lion reminded her that within Kael was a terrifying strength.
Just one move, and he had killed this water lion like he was just some ordinary chicken.
Kael walked calmly to the two parts of the dead lion, curiosity flashing in his eyes.
"Is there something here?" Kael asked as he looked around the area. The stench of blood filled his nose as he shifted his head from left to right.
"What's this?" Chloe said as she approached one of the sparse trees.
These trees looked like a mix of coconut trees and orange trees. They had slim bodies wrapped in smooth grey bark while their leaves spread out in an umbrella shape.
What attracted Chloe to this particular tree was that it had strange carvings on its stem.
The carvings were clear, clearly having been done with a very sharp object.
"Lion claw," Chloe said, instantly recognizing it as though it was a fingerprint. She had seen so many claw marks that she could easily differentiate between a lion's claw marks and something else.
Kael looked at the claw marks but couldn't tell anything from it, it looked like a regular claw mark carving to him, it could have been done by anyone.
"Why does this look like…" Chloe started as she drew close to the tree to get full details on the carvings.
"A magic rune," Kael completed for her, "A work of Xu Ying's?" He asked.
"I don't think so, Xu Ying has no reason to start placing runes everywhere he goes, it's not like him." Chloe shook her head, "Plus, the way this rune was carved, that's not how Xu Ying engraved his win runes,"
"It's deactivated anyway," Kael said. The carving was shaped like a rune but it was deactivated, there was no glow and no release of magic energy from the tree.
"That water lion must have thought that this tree led to some treasure or was valuable in some way," Chloe concluded as she guessed why the water lion had been hostile.
"A pity, he just died for nothing, there's nothing valuable about this tree," Kael said with an indifferent face. He looked back to see the two halves of the water lion lying in a widening pool of blood.
"Lack of knowledge, he didn't know how to identify what was valuable and what wasn't. Most of them don't know what to look for here," Kael said.
The two continued on their way, walking further into the plains of this pocket dimension.
'I can't feel it anymore,' Kael thought to himself, already putting the event with the water lion to the back of his mind.
Previously, when he was outside, in the main world, he could feel a signal, like something was calling him. Although Chloe could also feel it, Kael was sure that she couldn't feel it as strongly as he did.
It felt personal.
However, ever since he passed through the portal and had no choice but to succumb to the suppression of his fortune power, he had lost access to that signal.
"Can you still feel the signal?" Kael asked Chloe as they walked.
"No, you too?" Chloe asked. She too had noticed that the signal she had felt so strongly was gone like smoke.
Kael simply nodded. But this was also good in a way, it meant that Xu Ying and his group wouldn't be able to find the heavenly beacon wherever it was so easily.
Alas, Xu Ying and his group were just as confused as Kael, if not more.
