Chapter 3: Chapter 3 - New Age
Somewhere in a secluded location known to only the top powers of the world.
A large circular room can be seen dimly lit with a unique light going on and off constantly. A large table can be seen placed at the center of the room surrounded by six chairs! The chairs, each symbolizing a unique post of power for a leader controlling the world. A projector, placed on the table, with the lens facing the direction of a big white board a distance from it. A small clock stood gently beside the projector as the time it calculated reduced from twenty seconds to nil.
"CONNECTING HOSTS IN PROGRESS. THREE! TWO! ONE!" A lady's voice could be heard around the room.
The seat with number one written on it flickered with a bright light and a projection of a man appeared sitting on the chair. He looked see-through and wore a black flat-headed cap. He looked at the number two seat and noticed the occupier was also coming online.
Five minutes later, all seats were occupied by their respective owners.
"Now that we are all present, it's time to start!" The man sitting on the sixth chair spoke.
"In view of all that has happened, as we feared it happening, I suggest we have to proceed with the plan!" Said the occupier of the third seat, which was surprisingly a lady who looked young. She was the only female among, if not including, the old lady occupying the fourth seat.
"This is a plan that could change everything!" Retorted the man in the sixth seat.
The lady snapped her fingers, causing the projector to view the video of the gigantic creature which name was unknown, causing destruction and chaos everywhere. Though it has been reduced as the creature is nowhere to be seen. Even the low-level creatures that came along with it had successfully occupied more than half of the world. Yes! They pushed humans farther away from the place with many resources.
The government had to work overtime to calm the chaos to an extent, but the situation still hasn't calmed down completely. The world that was once divided into 6 unequal parts, was now divided into two, with the invaders taking more than half. The military has managed to fend off many low-level creatures from invading the last line of defense, as the ones they managed to fend off looked like strays.
Now, back to the meeting, the tension between the third seat holder and the sixth seat had become high as they didn't want to give in to each other. A soft cough was heard from the first seat holder which silenced every argument.
"We all know the reason for this project was because of the prediction that something like this would happen. We just didn't prepare for this magnitude." The first seat holder spoke.
"So I suggest we put the plan into action immediately, to avoid any more unnecessary loss."
The man's words silenced most arguments, as they couldn't dispute the fact that although he prefers being quiet, when he decides to make his move, no one can stop him.
Some members could be seen nodding their heads approvingly while two in particular had a neutral look on their faces, like what was discussed didn't have anything to do with them. Surprisingly, the first seat holder was also among them.
"All things being equal, we have this under control in six years. And I would like us to be quick about it."
The man stared at everyone's expressions, but he knew he couldn't process their thoughts, vice versa. The road each one of them forged to get here wasn't filled with smiles. It was forged at the expense of others!
"Does anyone have something to say?" He asked lazily, as his projection could be seen flickering.
"I'm certain we will not allow these creatures to take everything from us except what we deem umimportant." The man occupying the fifth seat spoke, his voice barely a whisper.
"Humans must be endangered before we can think of survival. Besides, some sacrifice needs to be made!" The eighth seat occupier replied. The man looked to be in his mid-forties, with his expression taut.
"A new era will begin from now, we shall fight till we conquer. If we really want to be set free, we must ensure that it happens." spoke another person.
"We shall meet soon. Till then, let's contribute towards the success of this PLAN."
And with that, the first seat projection went off. The lady who occupied the third seat, stared at the sixth seat occupier, "I haven't forgotten you. Just hope you do not fall into my hands."
The man sneered in response to her, then went off.
Others went off after bidding one another farewell.
Three days later, an announcement could be heard throughout the human base.
"Everyone should please report to the central city for registration! Time limit, a year." A mechanical voice could be heard by every human no matter where they found themselves. Many people were confused about the need for this urgent development, but they knew they did not have a way in the grand scheme of things.
Young and old people could be seen getting ready to move over to the city, which left them confused as to how the government intended to take care of the population. Some even had the thought that the government had decided to weed out the old ones, leaving the young ones alive for whatever plans they have. Nonetheless, they had a journey to make. Which, to some, will take weeks depending on how mobile the road was. Even traveling by air has become dangerous due to the invaders, not even the air routes for humans.
Chaos again ensued, as some opportunists took this opportunity to cause more damage, which resulted in the loss of a few lives if not for the quick intervention of the military.
The central city was rumored to be the only place humans had with abundant resources, which made some wonder if the government intended to sacrifice them all. They all realized that in the grand scheme of things, they are not even equal to ants. The sky roared as rain began falling, as if agreeing with them that their lives would not be the same any longer.
Everyone could be seen preparing for the great journey ahead, while those who were closer to the city blessed themselves for their luck. The old ones knew they wouldn't last longer, so many of them decided to stay behind to avoid meeting their end during the journey.
At the border separating the humans from the invaders, a man could be seen in a small tent separate from the other large ones. He sat on a chair, a table before him filled with papers neatly arranged. An armor suit can be seen hanging on the wall behind him as he remained focused on the paper he was currently going through.
He raised his head slightly as he heard a voice requesting permission to come in.
"You can come in." He said, his voice hoarse due to the stress of the constant battle.
A young man in his early twenties could be seen entering the tent in a green camouflaged uniform.
Raising his head, his eyes asking the reason for the disturbance, he noticed the stiff expression on the young soldier's face and could guess that something had happened that demanded his attention.
"Sir! There has been a new development!"
The man nodded at him to continue.
"The creatures seem to have retreated, but we don't know why."
The man frowned as he crossed his fingers below his chin. The situation looked strange. The invaders had been constantly attacking them, but now they had decided to retreat. It looked very strange. And it didn't make it any better that this happened when the humans decided to relocate.
"Thanks. You can go back and tell your captain to relieve you of every duty. You have an urgent task to do."
The young soldier saluted his commander then left. The man took out a stone from his chest pocket, then tapped it three times, which made it light up in a green glow.
He dropped the stone on the table then waited for the person at the other side to show up. This stone was a long distance communication device the military invented to deal with the problem that arose due to the loss of many communication lines.
Shortly after, a projection of a man sitting on a chair appeared before him.
"Commander Neil reporting!"
The projected man motioned for the commander to continue.
"There has been a recent change in the movement of the invaders."
"Is it about the creatures' retreat?"
The commander raised his eyebrows in surprise. How did the man know what he had just been informed about?
"No need to be surprised, commander. You will understand soon. The only problem with this is regarding the humans currently relocating." He sighed at the end.
The commander heaved a sign of relief. Despite living a military life, he still cared for civilians more than his peers, which made him not too popular with others, though he would not complain.
"Necessary sacrifices must be made to ensure the survival of humans" The commander heard a statement that cut him off his thoughts.
