Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Professor Oak’s Call!

As soon as the call connected, a familiar voice came through the receiver.

"This is the Zifu family villa in Pallet Town. Who is calling?" Uncle Fu's voice was calm yet filled with concern.

"Uncle Fu, it's me," Robert said with a smile.

There was a brief silence before Uncle Fu's tone turned excited. "Young Master Robert?"

"Yes, it's me. I've arrived at the Pokémon Center in Viridian City. I plan to stay here for the night and continue my journey to Pewter City tomorrow."

"Phew… That is a relief! You didn't call for an entire day and night! I was so worried that I was about to notify your father and send someone to search for you. I'm glad you're safe."

Robert chuckled. "Uncle Fu, you worry too much! You should have more faith in me. I spent the night in Viridian Forest, but nothing happened. Also, the Charmander I received has already evolved into Charmeleon."

"Oh? Really? Master Robert's talent is indeed impressive! To evolve Charmander in just one day… It seems I no longer need to worry about you."

Robert grinned. "Of course!"

For the next few minutes, Robert and Uncle Fu chatted about home and his experiences so far. Eventually, Miss Joy approached and informed him that dinner was ready, prompting Robert to wrap up the call.

Afterward, Robert had his first dinner at the Pokémon Center. Though the food appeared simple, it was surprisingly delicious. Miss Joy's cooking skills were commendable.

Once he finished eating, he retrieved his fully healed Pokémon from Miss Joy and proceeded to the temporary dormitory.

After a quick shower, Robert collapsed onto the bed, completely exhausted from the past two days. He fell asleep the moment his head touched the pillow.

The next morning, sunlight streamed through the dormitory window, gently illuminating Robert's face.

"Mmm…"

As the warmth of the sun reached his skin, Robert slowly opened his eyes. Outside the window, the sky was bright, and Pidgeys were pecking at the ground in search of food.

"Time flies so fast... I barely remember falling asleep. I must have been exhausted," Robert muttered while stretching.

He walked to the window, took a deep breath of fresh air, and let the crisp morning breeze refresh his senses. Feeling re-energized, he washed up, grabbed his backpack, and strapped his Poké Balls to his belt before heading to the lobby.

"Mr. Robert!" Miss Joy called out as soon as she saw him.

"Hmm? Miss Joy, are you calling me?" Robert turned around in surprise.

"Yes, you received a call last night, but since you were already asleep, I didn't want to disturb you. If you have time, you should return the call."

"A call? Who was it from? Uncle Fu again? No… Could it be my parents?"

Robert pondered for a moment before shaking his head. "Well, there's only one way to find out. Thank you, Miss Joy. I'll make the call now."

He walked over to the phone booth and dialed the number provided by Miss Joy. After a few rings, the screen flickered on, revealing a familiar face—Professor Oak.

"Hey, Robert! Good morning!" Professor Oak greeted with his usual warmth.

"Good morning, Professor Oak. Was it you who called me last night? Is something wrong?" Robert asked curiously.

Professor Oak chuckled. "Nothing's wrong. I just heard from your butler, Uncle Fu, that you arrived in Viridian City. Since I'm responsible for giving out Pokémon to new trainers, I wanted to check on your progress. If you ever need anything, feel free to call me."

"I see. So, what do you want to ask?"

"Just some basic questions—how many Pokémon you've caught, and whether you've faced any difficulties on your journey so far."

Robert smiled. "I wouldn't say I've faced any real difficulties. As for my Pokémon, I've only caught a Pidgey and a Metapod so far. Also, my Charmander evolved into Charmeleon."

Professor Oak's eyes widened. "Impressive, very impressive! Though you've only caught two Pokémon, you're already far ahead of some trainers. Plus, evolving Charmander so quickly shows your excellent training skills!"

Oak sighed before continuing. "It's a stark contrast to another trainer from Pallet Town who left the same day as you…"

Robert knew exactly who Professor Oak was referring to but decided to play along. "Someone else?"

Oak nodded. "Yes, a boy named Ash. He called me last night as well… Sigh. He's still struggling to catch even a single Pokémon. He tried, but it didn't go well. He's enthusiastic, but he has a long way to go."

Robert smirked slightly but remained neutral. "That's unfortunate. I hope he improves soon."

Professor Oak sighed. "Yes, me too. Anyway, that's all I wanted to check. Keep up the good work, and remember—you can always call me if you need anything."

"Got it, Professor. Thanks for checking in."

With that, the call ended. Robert leaned back and crossed his arms, reflecting on his conversation with Oak.

"So Ash is still struggling, huh? Well, that's to be expected. At this rate, I'll be miles ahead of him in no time."

He shrugged off the thought and turned toward the dining area. He still had breakfast to eat before setting off for Pewter City.

"Time to get moving. My next stop—Brock's Gym!"

With a confident smirk, Robert walked off, ready to face the next challenge in his journey.
