Chapter 16: Chapter 16: The Insect Catcher Appears!
"Ugh..."
Looking at Charmander's blissful expression, Robert couldn't help but feel a bit annoyed, but he still quickened his actions.
A few minutes later, as if sensing something, Robert quickly withdrew his right hand from Charmander. The power of Evergreen slowly returned to his body. Just as he retracted the energy, Robert nearly collapsed to the ground, his breathing becoming ragged.
"Huff... Huff...
I didn't expect that just a few minutes of simple healing would drain me so much.
It seems like it's because I just awakened this ability or maybe for some other reason. Otherwise, I wouldn't be this exhausted..."
Robert, gasping for breath, leaned on his knees and contemplated. However, something quickly came to mind, prompting him to access the system and check his panel.

"Just as I suspected. When I obtained the Evergreen Power, it was only Level 1, but now there's an experience bar. That means every time I use it, I gain 10 experience points. If I use it 9 more times, I can upgrade it to Level 2."
Robert instantly grasped the situation. As the Evergreen Power leveled up, he would likely no longer experience extreme exhaustion after using it. In the future, he could even use it multiple times in succession.
As he continued to think about the power's potential, Charmander, who had been peacefully enjoying the soothing energy, slowly opened its eyes. The mysterious force that had been flowing through its body had vanished. Just as it was about to ask Robert why he had stopped, it noticed its trainer panting heavily.
"Char...?" (Are you okay?)
Seeing Robert in such a state, Charmander called out with concern.
"I'm fine, don't worry. I just used up a lot of energy, but I'll recover after some rest. More importantly, how do you feel now?" Robert reassured Charmander while shifting the topic.
Charmander responded by striking a confident pose, flexing its tiny arms like a muscular warrior. Then, it ran a few energetic circles around Robert before stopping.
Observing carefully, Robert noticed that Charmander, who had been training to the point of exhaustion earlier, was now bursting with energy as if it had never trained at all.
"The power of Evergreen is incredible..."
Despite the ability's astonishing effects, it was still a massive drain on Robert. Although he wanted to improve it quickly, he realized that for now, he had to pace himself. If using it once left him gasping for air, it was best reserved for emergencies.
With Charmander fully recovered, Robert decided not to recall it into its Poké Ball. Instead, they continued their journey toward Viridian City together.
---
Time Passed Quickly.
After walking for nearly an hour, Robert and Charmander finally arrived on the outskirts of Viridian City. Just as they were about to enter, a voice called out from behind them.
"Hey! Are you a Pokémon Trainer?"
"Huh?"
Hearing the sudden voice, Robert and Charmander turned around to see a young boy approaching them. The boy wore blue shorts and a white vest, carrying a bug-catching net over his shoulder. He emerged from the bushes and ran toward them.
"This outfit... and that bug net..." Robert thought to himself. "Wow... This reminds me of those NPC trainers in the old Pokémon games who would jump out from behind trees to challenge you."
The boy stopped in front of Robert, a determined look on his face. He pulled a red-and-white Poké Ball from his pocket and spoke eagerly.
"You're a Trainer, right? Then let's have a battle! A one-on-one match, and the winner gets 200 Poké Dollars!"
Robert smirked. "Yeah, I'm a Trainer. In that case, I accept your challenge. I'll use Charmander."
Charmander, already fired up, stepped forward, its fighting spirit ignited. It stared at the Bug Catcher, eager for a good battle.
"A Charmander, huh? Then I'll use this—my strongest Pokémon! Go, Rattata!"
The Bug Catcher tossed his Poké Ball into the air. With a flash of red light, a small rodent Pokémon appeared. It had large front teeth, big round ears, and red, triangular eyes. Its purple body and white underbelly stood in stark contrast to the green surroundings, and its tail curled slightly as it landed.
"Rattata, huh? Alright, let's see what you've got!" Robert said, grinning as he prepared for the battle.
Charmander stepped forward, claws flexed and tail flame burning brighter. The battle was about to begin!
