Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Robert's Conjecture!
"Charmander, use Flame Jet to finish this battle!"
On Route 2 in the heart of Viridian Forest, Robert waved his right hand, signaling for Charmander to end the ongoing battle against a wild Caterpie.
"Char!"
Upon hearing the command, Charmander took a deep breath, tilted its head back slightly, and then released a stream of fiery red flames. The blazing attack engulfed the small Caterpie, leaving it no room to escape.
"Cater!"
The tiny Bug-type Pokémon had no chance against the overwhelming fire attack. Being both smaller in size and disadvantaged in type, it let out a weak cry before collapsing unconscious.
"Ding! Congratulations to the host for defeating the wild Pokémon Caterpie. You have earned 10 points."
The familiar system notification rang in Robert's mind.
That's right! After leaving the cave with Charmander and Pidgey, Robert had embarked on a mission—searching for wild Pokémon throughout Viridian Forest to train his team. This Caterpie was already the tenth opponent they had faced.
After ten consecutive battles, both Charmander's Flame Jet and Pidgey's Wing Attack had significantly improved in proficiency.
Watching the battle conclude, Robert walked towards the unconscious Caterpie. Taking a small bottle from his backpack, he sprayed a light mist over the fallen Pokémon.
"Cater…!"
The Caterpie stirred slightly, slowly regaining consciousness due to the healing effects of the potion. However, the moment it spotted Robert and Charmander nearby, fear filled its tiny eyes. With a panicked squeak, it scurried away into the nearby bushes, vanishing from sight.
Robert blinked in surprise. "Am I really that scary?"
He turned to Charmander, who simply shook its head in response.
"Char!"
Robert chuckled. "I guess Caterpie just isn't used to battles. Well then, let's keep moving. Pidgey, you're up next. Find our next opponent."
"Pidgey!"
Perching momentarily on a tree branch, Pidgey spread its wings and took off into the sky. It scanned the forest below for any signs of wild Pokémon. After a few moments, it chirped in excitement and returned, guiding Robert and Charmander toward their next battle.
The Training Continues
As the day progressed, Robert continued deeper into Viridian Forest, following the map provided by the system. His strategy was simple—find wild Pokémon, battle them, and train Charmander and Pidgey as much as possible.
With this approach, he took on wild Pokémon after wild Pokémon, ensuring his team gained valuable battle experience. Whether it was a stray Rattata, a sneaky Weedle, or even a bold Spearow, Robert challenged them all.
His persistence paid off. With each battle, his Pokémon's strength grew, and their skills sharpened. But training wasn't the only thing Robert was focused on. During his battles, he made an interesting discovery.
Observing Pokémon Growth
Through the system's interface, Robert could see an invisible "energy" surrounding his Pokémon. This mist-like aura seemed to increase every time they won a battle.
"So this must be experience points," Robert murmured to himself, watching as Charmander absorbed more of this energy. "If this is similar to the games, then when this energy reaches a certain threshold, evolution should happen."
He carefully observed wild Pokémon as well. Some had energy levels that seemed high enough for evolution, yet they remained unchanged.
"That's strange… In the games, Pokémon evolve as soon as they reach the required experience level. But here, something seems to be preventing them from evolving. Could it be a natural limitation in this world?"
Robert frowned, deep in thought.
If level requirements weren't the only factor in evolution, then perhaps Pokémon needed to overcome some kind of mental or physical barrier. Maybe they required a certain level of understanding, training, or even an emotional trigger to evolve.
He recalled how Ash's Pokémon in the anime sometimes evolved during key emotional moments or important battles. Could evolution in this world be more like that?
Still, one thing puzzled him.
"If wild Pokémon are struggling to evolve, then why do captured Pokémon evolve so much faster?"
Robert couldn't answer that question yet, but he knew one thing for sure—he had to keep training and testing his theories.
Moving Forward
Deciding to leave these thoughts for later, Robert turned his focus back to the training session. His goal remained clear—train Charmander and Pidgey until they were strong enough to leave Viridian Forest.
After all, beyond this forest lay Pewter City and its Gym Leader, Brock.
His first official Gym battle was waiting for him, and Robert intended to win. If he wanted to become the first-ever Pokémon Champion of the Indigo League, he had to start strong.
"Alright, let's keep going!" Robert said, his excitement growing. "We've got more battles to win!"
"Char!" Charmander roared, flames flickering from its tail.
"Pidgey!" Pidgey chirped, flapping its wings energetically.
With renewed determination, Robert and his Pokémon pressed on, ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead.
