Chapter 45: Chapter 45: A Pure-Hearted Child
"So, is this where you live?"
Maki turned to the Mew perched on his shoulder, asking with a hint of curiosity. In his memory, Mew had appeared several times across games and anime, yet none of those depictions seemed to match the one before him.
Moreover, judging by the surroundings and the Pokémon here, this place wasn't remotely like the usual Saffron City Forest.
Maki even speculated that this might be an entirely separate dimension that he and the others had accidentally stumbled into. After all, if it were truly part of the regular forest, surely someone would have discovered it by now?
"You're the ones who barged into my home and started a fight!"
The voice of Mew echoed in Maki's mind. For a powerful Psychic-type Pokémon, this level of telepathy was child's play.
Mew's voice was distinctly feminine, with a touch of a loli-like charm that matched its adorable appearance perfectly.
Still, Mew itself was technically genderless, so anyone entertaining inappropriate thoughts might want to reflect on their life choices.
After Maki's explanation, Mew seemed to come to its senses.
Oh right—this was its home! Why had it allowed itself to be bullied by that dragon so meekly?
Having realized this, Mew flew up to Dragonite, expressing its displeasure with a cute pout. However, the moment Dragonite raised its paw, Mew immediately darted behind Maki for cover.
Although Mew might not necessarily lose in a fight with Dragonite, battling meant getting hurt—and getting hurt was painful!
In truth, Dragonite hadn't intended to attack when it raised its claw. It had already sensed that Mew harbored no hostility toward them. Still, the idea of apologizing was utterly unthinkable. Except for the lady Dragonite at home, this Dragonite had never bowed its head to anyone.
"Keep that big oaf away from me," Mew said telepathically to Maki, pointing at Dragonite.
"Boo!"
"What did you call me, you pink pipsqueak?"
Dragonite seemed less than thrilled by Mew's nickname. What Dragonite didn't know, however, was that in terms of ancestral lineage, Mew might very well qualify as its "ancestor."
Maki wisely refrained from mentioning this fact, lest the two Pokémon start fighting again.
"Dragonite, why don't you return to your Poké Ball for now? I can handle things here."
"Boo!"
"I'm here to protect you!"
"Mew doesn't mean any harm. Besides, if you two start fighting again, I might be the one in real danger."
Maki shrugged, and the Charmander nearby nodded furiously in agreement, sliding down the tree trunk to stand beside him.
"Boo..."
Though clearly reluctant, Dragonite eventually returned to its Poké Ball.
"All right. Now that Dragonite is safely tucked away, can you tell me what's going on here?"
Maki sat down and looked at the floating Mew expectantly.
"Hmm... To put it simply, this is my private space! And how dare you act so righteous when you're the ones who barged in uninvited?"
"Ahem, that's not important. Since this is your private space, how exactly did we end up here?"
Hearing this, Mew flew a small circle around Maki, clearly pondering how to explain.
"Lately, the space of the Pokémon world has been very unstable. Sometimes, this place will briefly connect to the outside world."
From Mew's troubled expression, it was clear that even it didn't know how to solve this problem.
"I see..."
"You're thinking of something bad, aren't you?"
"Me? No, of course not."
Maki's face remained perfectly calm, but there was no way he'd admit that he had briefly considered contacting Giovanni to capture this Mew. If successful, it would be a major breakthrough for Team Rocket's research.
Although the thought had only flashed through his mind, Mew had caught onto it with ease.
"I can sense an incredibly pure energy within your heart, though..."
Mew seemed puzzled by the contradiction in Maki's behavior. If it were judging by his fleeting malicious intent, Maki should have been no different from the countless others Mew had encountered. Yet, his actions thus far painted him as a genuinely good-hearted person.
Humans were such complicated creatures!
Moreover, Mew had detected a faint yet familiar energy from that big dragon. It was weak but somehow comforting. Of course, that didn't mean Mew would ever cozy up to Dragonite!
Mew found itself thoroughly baffled.
"A pure heart? That description fits me perfectly!"
Maki shamelessly agreed without a shred of self-awareness.
Mew rolled its eyes mid-air.
"You mentioned earlier that the space of the Pokémon world has become unstable. Do you know why?"
Maki's tone grew serious as he recalled Mew's earlier words. From the sound of it, this wasn't a common occurrence and had only started happening recently.
Mew tilted its head thoughtfully before deciding to answer honestly.
"The instability originates from the Hoenn region. Kanto isn't even experiencing the worst of it yet... You've heard the legends from there, haven't you?"
Hearing this, Maki immediately felt a sense of dread.
The Hoenn region, legends, instability...
It could only mean one thing.
"Kyogre and Groudon?"
Mew nodded.
"Most likely. Those two idiots are on the verge of awakening again~."
Mew sighed deeply before angrily waving its tiny pink hands.
"They'll only cause trouble in Hoenn, right? Why are you so upset?"
Maki found Mew's emotional reaction a bit odd.
"Ugh! Last time they woke up, they nearly wrecked my home! I tried to intervene, but that oversized fish blasted me away like I was nothing!"
Mew, evidently still traumatized by the memory, had nothing but disdain for the two legendary Pokémon.
Maki wasn't surprised that Mew had witnessed the last awakening of the Hoenn titans. After all, its lifespan was ridiculously long.
What hadn't changed, apparently, was its lack of judgment. Only Mew would think it wise to meddle with those two.
Though Mew was far from weak, its earlier scuffle with Dragonite proved that it wasn't exactly battle-ready.
Dragonite, thanks to its natural talent and Giovanni's rigorous training, was a standout even among Champion-tier Pokémon. However, against true Legendary Pokémon, it still fell short.
And Mew? It couldn't even defeat Dragonite, let alone take on Groudon or Kyogre.
