Pokémon: I’m Really Not a Team Rocket Spy

Chapter 46: Chapter 46: What's It Got to Do with Me?

From another perspective, the awakening of Groudon and Kyogre might actually be beneficial for Team Rocket.

In addition to their operations in Kanto and Johto, Team Rocket had always been eager to expand into other regions. Naturally, Hoenn, being the closest region, was their next target.

However, Hoenn's underground forces—Team Magma and Team Aqua—posed a significant obstacle. While neither organization could match Team Rocket's strength even if combined, their deep roots in Hoenn over many years made it difficult for Team Rocket to infiltrate the region. Not to mention, the Hoenn League was also a formidable presence.

But if Kyogre and Groudon awakened, chaos would inevitably ensue in Hoenn. The League would likely be too preoccupied to deal with Team Rocket, creating an opportunity to make their move.

Moreover, due to the interconnected nature of the regional leagues, any major disruption in Hoenn would almost certainly prompt Kanto to send reinforcements, leaving their own territory more vulnerable.

Team Rocket, however, would have no such concerns. Whether Team Magma or Team Aqua survived was irrelevant to them. In fact, they might even welcome such chaos.

While Maki and Mew were discussing this, Mew suddenly glanced at the sky and turned to Maki, saying:

[The rift you came through is about to close. You'd better leave soon.]

"So quickly? We haven't been here that long!"

[This place was already unstable to begin with, and after that big oaf insisted on fighting me, it seems to have started detaching completely.]

"What happens if we don't leave?"

Maki pondered for a moment before asking.

[Oh, nothing much. You'd just stay here with me forever.]

"Goodbye!"

With Saffron City still in disarray, who knew where this space might drift once it detached from the Pokémon world? Returning might become a serious problem.

The key issue was that this place had absolutely nothing to offer. The most entertaining activity here would be watching Nidoking bare its teeth—while avoiding being dragged off to become its chew toy.

"So, no parting gift? Aren't you supposed to be a Legendary Pokémon? At least give me something."

Whether in novels or games, Legendary Pokémon like Mew were always top-tier NPCs. Surely it should give something valuable, right?

Mew's face darkened. This jerk had caused chaos in its domain and now dared to ask for a gift? What kind of logic was that?

Mew admitted that its understanding of human shamelessness had been redefined thanks to Maki.

Even Maki's Charmander looked away in embarrassment, quietly distancing itself from him. Truly shameless!

In the end, Maki left Mew's private space without receiving any gift. Mew simply teleported him and his Pokémon out. It seemed novels were full of lies—this Mew was stingy to the core.

After leaving Mew's domain, Maki didn't immediately return to Saffron City. Instead, he called Giovanni.

"I encountered Mew in the Saffron City forest," Maki stated directly. No matter what, Mew was of immense significance to Team Rocket. Such an event couldn't go unreported.

"What did you say?!"

Giovanni, who had been wondering why Maki was calling, shot up from his chair. The important report he had been holding crumpled in his grip, unnoticed.

After all, despite Team Rocket's extensive efforts, they had only managed to obtain a few fossilized hairs of Mew. And now, Maki had encountered a living Mew. How could Giovanni not be excited?

Even Maki had rarely seen Giovanni lose his composure like this. He recounted everything that had happened in Mew's domain in detail.

"Although Mew claimed this, there's also the possibility it was lying. After all, the moment I saw it, I had the instinctive thought, 'I must capture it.' It likely sensed that."

"Good work. Whether what Mew said is true or not, even a 1% chance is worth pursuing. Stay in Saffron City for the next few days. As for Mew... I'll personally handle it."

Giovanni's lips curled into a confident smile. In his view, if he encountered that Mew, there would be no escape for it.

Giovanni didn't care how strong Mew was. Even if it couldn't defeat a Caterpie, it didn't matter. What made Mew precious was its genes.

"There's one more thing. According to Mew, Groudon and Kyogre in Hoenn are likely to awaken soon."

"I'm aware of that," Giovanni replied calmly.

"Huh?"

Maki was stunned. "You already know? How?"

"Recently, Maxie and Archie have been unusually active, even extending their reach into Kanto. If anything could drive them to such extremes, it would be the Legendary Pokémon of Hoenn."

Giovanni's tone was matter-of-fact.

"The Hoenn League's higher-ups have likely guessed as much. But given their bureaucratic tendencies, they'll probably wait until an actual crisis before taking action."

"What about us?"

"Just watch. While Hoenn is a key target for Team Rocket's expansion, we haven't officially started operations there yet. Whatever happens has nothing to do with us."

Giovanni's perspective aligned with Maki's: let them fight it out. Regardless of the outcome, it would benefit Team Rocket.

As for whether Team Magma or Team Aqua might actually control the Legendary Pokémon...

Don't be ridiculous. Giovanni considered both Maxie and Archie to be lunatics. If Groudon and Kyogre didn't crush them upon awakening, that would already be a miracle. Controlling them? Laughable.

Sometimes, Giovanni truly wanted to crack open their heads and see what was inside. Even Team Rocket wouldn't dare target Ho-Oh outright; they were content with plucking a hair from Mew.

If Hoenn's myths were true, Groudon and Kyogre were far from reasonable beings—unlike Ho-Oh.

After reporting to Giovanni, Maki returned to Saffron City. Considering Sabrina's current state, teleportation was out of the question. Maki took Charmander to the Pokémon Center to rest.

He also contacted Sabrina to confirm that her psychic powers had stabilized and to reassure her of his safety.

While there, he purchased some berries associated with Dragon-types—not for Dragonite, but for Lance's Dratini. After all, he'd promised Lance not long ago.

After enjoying a proper meal at the Pokémon Center, Maki spent the evening crafting Pokéblocks until night fell.
