Chapter 142: Chapter 142: Ambush
"Gengar, use Night Shade!"
A man's voice rang out as Gengar transformed into a massive shadow, engulfing the Vileplume before it.
Already battered and bruised, Vileplume succumbed to the attack and collapsed, losing its ability to battle.
"Go, Gengar, drain its life force!"
At the man's command, Gengar approached Vileplume and used its ghostly abilities to siphon every ounce of the Pokémon's life energy.
Once Gengar had absorbed all of Vileplume's life force, its eyes glowed a brighter crimson. Turning around, it met the man's eager expression.
A dark mist emanated from Gengar, enveloping the man and turning his eyes red as well.
Moments later, the man's eyes returned to normal, and he left with Gengar, heading deeper into the forest, leaving Vileplume's lifeless body behind.
Unbeknownst to them, perched in the canopy of a distant tree, Persian observed their every move with its keen eyesight.
Once the coast was clear, Persian leapt from tree to tree, quickly making its way to Ron's location.
"It seems the man is not much of a threat; the Gengar is the one we need to deal with," Ron concluded after listening to Persian's report.
Most Ghost-type Pokémon, while capable of draining life force, do so only to a limited extent. For instance, the Ghost-types in Lavender Town are closely monitored, and their actions are generally restricted to harmless pranks without endangering life.
However, in other regions, some Ghost-types, either by birth or due to external influences, become malevolent.
These malevolent Ghost-types, once they taste the rapid growth of power from draining life energy, often grow unrestrained.
When the Pokémon League detects such cases, they act immediately, rallying trainers to eradicate the threat before it grows.
In rare cases, malevolent Ghost-types feign submission and allow themselves to be captured, gradually manipulating their trainers' minds. They then start draining the life force of opponents and their trainers' other Pokémon.
After each drain, the Ghost-type returns a small portion of the energy to their trainer, creating an illusion of shared strength and progress.
Gengar, with its Hypnosis ability, makes controlling its trainer even easier.
Using their trainer as cover, these Ghost-types expand their reach from the wild to cities, covertly amassing power.
The League's records recount an incident years ago involving such a Ghost-type, causing significant losses.
Following that event, the League began closely monitoring trainers with Ghost-types, regularly assessing whether their Pokémon posed a threat.
Lavender Town, home to the Elite Four member Agatha's family, developed various means to detect Ghost-types, further bolstered by League campaigns. These efforts brought malevolent Ghost-types to near extinction.
Ron hadn't expected to encounter one here.
Even without the earlier attack, Ron believed it was imperative to eliminate this threat before Gengar grew stronger and caused greater harm.
Based on Persian's observations, the Gengar was likely at the mid elite level. With the combined efforts of Machamp and the others, they had a solid chance of defeating it.
As for the man's other Pokémon, Ron wasn't worried. Judging by his behavior, they were likely long drained by Gengar, either dead or too weak to fight.
Having made his decision, Ron acted without hesitation, preparing for a confrontation.
Following Persian's guidance, Ron had Kirlia use Teleport to close the distance.
In the forest, under the warm sunlight, a chilling cold lingered.
Amid the eerie atmosphere, Primeape's eyes were filled with despair.
No matter how hard it tried, its attacks always passed through its opponent, while every move from the enemy left a new wound.
The cumulative injuries and loss of life energy only deepened Primeape's despair, rendering it helpless against Gengar's Night Shade once more.
As Primeape fell, its life force was swiftly drained, leaving it at Gengar's mercy.
In the next moment, Kirlia's Teleport brought Ron and his team directly behind Gengar.
Bellossom darted toward the man with Shave, eliminating him with a swift strike and locking all the Poké Balls on his belt to prevent further mishaps.
Persian used Shave to charge at Gengar, breaking its focus with Hypnosis.
Machamp followed with Foresight, ensuring their attacks would connect, while Kirlia launched a Psychic assault.
Caught off guard, Gengar faltered under Kirlia's mental attack.
Persian seized the opportunity, unleashing a Hyper Beam that struck Gengar just as it recovered.
Using Shave to reposition, Machamp landed a clean hit on Gengar with Thunder Punch.
Having dispatched the man, Bellossom returned to Ron's side with Shave.
"Bellossom, use Moonlit Bamboo Shadows!"
At Ron's command, Bellossom combined Magical Leaf and Moonblast, creating a dazzling display of green leaves swirling under the moonlight that enveloped Gengar after Machamp's assault.
Although Gengar had the potential to become a significant threat to the League, it was currently only at the mid elite level. After consecutive heavy blows, it was severely injured.
"Persian, use Hypnosis!"
"Machamp, finish it with Focus Punch!"
"Bellossom, strike Gengar's back with Hyper Beam!"
After Bellossom's and Machamp's combined attacks, Persian recovered from the Hyper Beam's aftereffects.
Its Hypnosis rendered Gengar drowsy, allowing Machamp to close the distance.
An orange beam struck Gengar's back as Machamp's punch landed squarely on its face.
The combined attacks, along with Persian's earlier Hyper Beam, overwhelmed Gengar, despite its higher level than Machamp.
Showing no mercy, Machamp delivered a final blow, killing Gengar.
As it died, Gengar's body dissolved into dark mist, leaving behind a faintly visible, oval-shaped solid object.
