Chapter 108: OPRS: Chapter 108
Over three hundred Revolutionary Army pirates stood at the cliff's edge, nervously swallowing. They'd climbed up, but jumping down was a different challenge. It was like looking down from a tall building—your hands and feet go weak, you sweat, for no reason.
Acrophobia is ingrained in human genes, a survival mechanism. But humanity's thirst for challenges is endless; Red Bull's daredevil budget is limitless; sponsored death-defying stunts make headlines. The principles are simple, but the underlying technology is essential.
For example, the discovery of aerodynamics allowed paragliding. Wingsuits, seemingly simple, are the result of advanced aerodynamics—who knew connecting arms and legs would create lift? Wind tunnel tests, supercomputer simulations—this is how wingsuits were developed.
Every successful commercial product is a refined result of modern technology; immature products are quickly discarded. Alistair's were highly refined.
For example, the compact parachutes, deployed by opening a backpack, were unnecessary in the One Piece world—no one flew that high. Even weak Devil Fruit users could slow their descent. Ordinary pirates had no need for parachutes.
Alistair's ability to devise several descent methods in minutes surprised them. But by now, they were unsurprised by Alistair's ingenuity.
The gold was securely bound to the hot air balloon baskets; they didn't need Ace and the balloons; Skypiea had "hot air balloon octopuses" for paid departures. Ordinary citizens could help people descend, indicating plentiful supply. As air and sea creatures, they were reusable.
Alistair could have used them, but he wanted to train them. Parachuting would be mandatory training for the Revolutionary Army. Alistair had tactical plans. This was a test.
Not just them, but Ace, Hancock, Dalton, and Alistair wore wingsuits, sewn by Skypiea's skilled artisans over three days. Alistair wanted to test them.
Enel stood by, indifferent, secretly wanting a wingsuit. He considered himself lightning, attacking from above; descent was effortless. Alistair knew it was psychological.
Even if easy for him, he wanted to see what the wingsuits could do. Landing with a thud versus gliding down were different experiences. Enel had only experienced the thud; he envied the wingsuits.
Alistair ignored him; he could be kind but not too kind. He checked his equipment, then Hancock's, and the others checked theirs; he nodded to Wyper.
Wyper, impassive before baskets of ancestral gold, inflated hot air balloon octopuses; they strained to lift the gold towards the edge of Skypiea. Gold's density far exceeds other materials; a basket of gold might weigh more than the Going Merry.
Alistair had anticipated this; ropes connected the baskets, slowing their descent. They floated down one by one.
Lafitte spread his wings, nodded at Alistair, thanking him for his trust, and followed. He would guide the octopuses to Mock Town, to the plaza, so everyone could see the gold's weight. This wasn't all of Shandora's gold, but entrusting it to a new recruit was a show of trust. Alistair's charisma was compelling.
Alistair had his own way of judging people: if Lafitte, a future Blackbeard commander, absconded with the gold, Alistair would simply buy off a Yonko commander next time.
This is the spirit of a strong One Piece character!
Alistair looked at the nervous Revolutionary Army pirates, jumped first. He didn't give pre-battle speeches; the ideological groundwork was laid; more words were unnecessary!
Alistair jumped; Ace and Hancock followed, then Dalton and Robin, Mihar, Van Augur, and others. Wingsuits spread, like birds, startling the Skypieans.
"They…really left?" Even now, Wyper looked at the disappearing clouds in disbelief. These "invaders" visited, found the Golden Bell, took some gold, taught them lessons, and left?! It felt like a dream.
