Chapter 24: The First Infected
"Haaaah!"
Cahill roared, swinging his greatsword with his sole remaining left hand towards Alucard.
Though he claimed that losing an arm was nothing, his body's reactions told a completely different story.
Alucard, without even using any extra skills, effortlessly dodged Cahill's attacks as if dancing.
"Hmph!"
Cahill let out another furious roar, raising his greatsword high before smashing it down, splitting the ground into a bottomless chasm.
Alucard extended his left hand, which wasn't holding a gun, and suddenly blood streamed forth. In the instant Cahill couldn't react, Alucard's left hand forcefully plunged into his body.
"Ugh..."
Cahill's pupils constricted, as if experiencing unimaginable pain.
For the first few seconds, Cahill endured, but after ten seconds, he felt every cell in his body screaming in agony, and he couldn't help but roar in anguish.
Alucard pulled his left hand out, leaped back, and landed lightly on the top of a broken tree behind the Harald Kingdom army. He quietly watched Cahill's reaction, then issued a command to the other Harald Kingdom soldiers: "No one is to attack him!"
Alucard's role was merely foreign aid hired by the King to deal with Cahill, so the royal army had no obligation to obey his orders. However, after witnessing Alucard's power, when he uttered those words, surprisingly, no one dared to defy him.
The Harald soldiers who had been ready to deliver finishing blows halted their movements.
"Gah-ah-ah!"
Cahill's cries of agony continued.
Just as someone from the Joris army stepped forward to check on him, Cahill suddenly swung his left hand, sending the ally who had approached him flying into the air. He fell back down a few seconds later, splattering into a bloody mess.
Everyone was utterly shocked by Cahill's attack on his own ally, especially those from the Joris army. They couldn't understand why their usually stern but extremely caring general would suddenly attack a comrade.
Then, Cahill slowly stood up. His cries of pain had vanished.
Gradually, everyone could see the changes in his body. His body swelled, almost bursting his armor.
Cahill himself seemed to realize this issue, forcefully tearing off his custom armor.
The moment the armor fell, his body's expansion became even more astonishing. His original height of just over two meters suddenly swelled to about four meters. His entire body turned blood red, his neck and jaw gradually fused, and sharp fangs grew from his mouth. Looking at his overall appearance, his only remaining left hand transformed into long claws, more terrifying than those of any beast.
At this point, Cahill could no longer be called a human, nor any kind of animal. Even though this world had various races—giants, dwarves, fish-men, minks—there was absolutely no such race as this!
"ROAR!!!"
Though he had lost his original appearance, his combat awareness seemed to remain. The mutated Cahill picked up his previously dropped greatsword from the ground. What was once a giant sword now looked tiny in Cahill's hands.
WHOOSH!
A flash of silver. Cahill's horizontal sword strike instantly reaped countless lives, including those of his own men!
'So fast!'
This was everyone's instinctive first thought.
"ROAR!!"
After his roar, Cahill didn't target Alucard. Instead, he focused on the densest concentration of troops and charged forward without hesitation, swinging the greatsword in his hand, continuously harvesting the lives of soldiers from both nations on the battlefield.
"It worked!" Alucard roared with laughter. "Blacklight's first success! Indeed, only someone with a powerful physique and mental fortitude like you could possibly withstand this!"
As Alucard spoke, Cahill was already slashing wildly through the army, becoming a monster purely driven by destruction and a thirst for blood.
"You bastard! What did you do to General Cahill?!" A follower of Cahill, tears welling in his eyes, swung his sword at Alucard. Anyone with eyes could see that Cahill's transformation was entirely Alucard's doing.
For such a minor soldier, Alucard simply sent him to hell with a single bullet, chuckling, "His stamina, speed, strength, and physique will all show massive increases, but it seems he loses his sanity and becomes a monster driven only by combat and a thirst for blood. That part's different from me!"
Alucard shook his head, laughing. He admitted he loved to fight, but he didn't think of himself as a creature that craved blood.
When a pikeman seized an opportunity and plunged his spear into Cahill's body, the latter's speed didn't decrease at all as he continued to attack, causing Alucard's expression to change again. "Oh? Doesn't he feel pain? Or is it that his desire to fight is too strong to care about pain?"
"Alucard-sama! Please deal with that guy quickly! If this continues, we'll lose countless of our own men!" Draugr could no longer tolerate Cahill's berserk rampage.
While the enemy was suffering losses, their own side was also losing countless lives. He had no choice but to beg Alucard for help, even changing his address.
