Despite picking up swordsmanship, Hirito saw it merely as a means to compensate for his weaknesses rather than his primary fighting style. The foundation he built was enough for his needs.
"I didn't expect you to start learning swordsmanship too. And with the medical ninjutsu you've been studying, if you keep getting distracted like this, you'll fall behind me in puppetry soon enough," Sasori commented, leaning against the Salamander puppet as he observed Hirito practicing sword strikes on a wooden dummy.
"Both medical ninjutsu and swordsmanship are just tools to improve my survival chances," Hirito replied, sheathing his wooden training sword.
Sasori considered his words before nodding. "That makes some sense," he admitted. He walked over to a nearby stone, dusted it off, and took a seat. "But tell me, do you think immortality is possible? Is there a way to make someone exist forever?"
Hirito froze slightly, pausing to wipe the sweat from his forehead. This... Could this be the initial thought that led Sasori to transform himself into a puppet in the original timeline?
The moment someone removes their human limitations, the way they think begins to shift. No hormones, no biological constraints—over time, their emotions fade, and they lose their sense of humanity.
"Maybe," Hirito answered after a brief pause. "But there's one condition."
Sasori tilted his head. "And that is?"
"You have to be strong—so strong that no one in this world can kill you. Otherwise, even if you obtain an immortal body, you'll just end up being destroyed by someone stronger."
Hearing this, Hirito's thoughts drifted toward Orochimaru. That guy wasn't invincible, but his survivability was unmatched. If Sasori had taken a different approach, perhaps he wouldn't have ended up as just another casualty of Akatsuki.
Sasori remained silent, seemingly lost in thought. After a long pause, he spoke again, "I heard you and Grandma are leaving for the front lines in two days."
"Yeah, but Chiyo-sensei placed me in the reserve force. The village also assigned a top jonin to lead the team. Unless the entire unit gets wiped out, the chances of me dying are pretty low. Of course, to make sure I survive, I'm doing my best to improve my escape and defensive skills now."
Sasori's expression was complicated, but after a moment, he simply said, "Well, just make sure you come back alive. Don't make me wait for nothing."
Hirito raised an eyebrow. "Why does that sound like a bad omen?"
Sasori didn't respond.
"Alright, I'll try my best," Hirito said with a chuckle. He knew Sasori wasn't someone who spoke warmly. For him to say something like that showed that he truly saw Hirito as a friend.
Sasori hated waiting. His childhood had been spent waiting for parents who never returned. To him, waiting was synonymous with disappointment.
Hearing Sasori say he was willing to wait for him now... that meant something.
"That aside," Hirito continued, "I actually came here today to ask for your help with something." He reached into his ninja pouch and pulled out a photograph.
Sasori took it and examined the image of a blonde woman wearing glasses, her gentle smile giving off an air of kindness.
"This woman is beautiful and seems kind. Are you planning to pursue her? But the age gap is a bit much, isn't it?" Sasori quipped.
Hirito sighed. "No. Something about her feels off."
"You think she's a spy?" Sasori asked, his expression becoming serious.
Hirito nodded.
"Then why not tell Grandma? If she's already gained Chiyo's trust and holds a high status in the village, I get why investigating her openly would be difficult," Sasori mused before shaking his head. "But why do you suspect her in the first place?"
Hirito smirked. "Aren't you even going to ask if my suspicions are valid?"
"I trust you. You're the only person my age who isn't a complete idiot," Sasori replied matter-of-factly.
"...Thanks, I guess," Hirito said, speechless.
"You're welcome," Sasori said seriously.
Hirito sighed. "Alright, I'll explain. I did some digging before coming here, and what I found is... strange. Her parents supposedly moved to Sunagakure from a border town in the Wind Country during the Second Kazekage's era. Neither of them were shinobi—her father was a doctor. Both of them passed away a year ago."
"Before that, Reina was an average Genin at best. Then, suddenly, she accumulated enough merits and learned high-level medical ninjutsu, getting promoted to Chunin within a year. In the current medical training program, she's displaying a learning speed far beyond her peers. Maybe she's genuinely talented in medical ninjutsu, but…"
"You think she learned her skills elsewhere?"
"Exactly."
Sasori's expression darkened. "Konoha?"
Hirito nodded. "Yes. Sunagakure and Konoha are the only two villages with the medical infrastructure to produce such a skilled medic. But here's the problem: Sunagakure's official medical program was only established after Tsunade reversed the situation in the Rain Country last year. It wasn't even formalized until this year."
"Meanwhile, Konoha has had Tsunade for years. Even if they didn't have a structured program before, Tsunade's influence alone could've helped them train a generation of elite medical ninjas. Reina could be one of them."
Sasori frowned. "Would Konoha really be crazy enough to send one of their top medical ninja as a spy?"
Hirito scoffed. "You'd have to ask those two idiots, Danzo and Hiruzen."
Sasori crossed his arms. "Alright. But let's say she is a spy. Why would Konoha take that risk?"
"Think about it. She's embedded in the medical corps—right under Chiyo's nose. If she's a spy, she could assassinate key personnel under the guise of 'treatment failures.' She could pass classified information back to Konoha. With Sunagakure's medical system just beginning to develop, having a high-ranking mole could cause devastating damage. That alone is worth the risk."
Sasori remained silent for a moment before nodding. "I get it. Since you're heading to the battlefield, you can't investigate her yourself. You need someone who has the skill and connections to keep digging."
Hirito grinned. "Exactly. So, I'm counting on you."
Sasori glanced at the photograph again before slipping it into his sleeve. "Fine. I'll handle it."
"One more thing," Hirito said. "Be careful. If Reina is truly a spy, she's already won Chiyo's trust. That means she's dangerous."
Sasori smirked. "Relax. I'm not so easy to fool."
Hirito nodded and patted Sasori's shoulder. "I know. That's why I'm leaving this to you."
No matter what happened next, Sasori was the perfect person for this job. He was brilliant, cautious, and—most importantly—Chiyo's grandson.
Even if the investigation was discovered, he would be safe.
