Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Mutually Multiplying Paper Bombs
"Fire Release: Fire Dragon Bullet!"
"Earth Release: Swamp of the Underworld!"
Spurred on by Ōnoki's rallying cries, the thousands of Iwa-nin momentarily cast aside their fear, launching a barrage of attacks. A myriad of jutsu streaked through the air, aimed at the towering wooden giant. However, most barely reached its knees.
Despite the overwhelming assault, the wooden titan only trembled slightly, its wooden knees charred but unyielding.
"How do we fight this thing?!"
"More jutsu! If a thousand isn't enough, make it two thousand! If two thousand isn't enough, then three thousand! Don't let that thing destroy the village!"
Standing atop the wooden giant's head, Tobirama gazed down at the Iwa-nin like a swarm of insignificant ants. Their so-called attacks couldn't even make the giant sway.
This was the gap between a Kage-level ninja and someone who had surpassed the Kage level.
A Kage-level ninja could be worn down by sheer numbers. But someone beyond that level? Their power wasn't something numbers could counter. On a battlefield of ten thousand, they reigned supreme.
"Dust Release: Detachment of the Primitive World Technique!"
Ōnoki, refusing to give up, summoned the last reserves of his chakra. A blinding white light erupted from his hands, forming a massive Dust Release cube that enveloped the wooden giant's left leg below the knee.
BOOM! BOOM!
A deafening explosion followed, disintegrating the wooden giant's left lower leg into particles. The enormous construct wavered but remained standing.
Ōnoki's face showed no triumph—only despair.
That was the largest Dust Release he could muster, yet it barely destroyed a single leg. Could they really resist this monster?
From his vantage point above, Tobirama wasted no time. As soon as the Dust Release dissipated, the wooden giant's obliterated leg began regenerating, its chakra-infused wood rapidly growing back.
The already demoralized Iwa-nin were plunged into even deeper despair.
"Well, since you've taken issue with me, let's resolve that issue," Tobirama muttered, as if the Iwa-nin below could hear him.
With that, the enormous wooden giant began to move. Its immense arm, wrapped in a serpentine wooden dragon, swung forward.
BOOM!
A colossal fist smashed into the ground. The Iwa-nin caught beneath it didn't even have time to react before they were reduced to pulp. The impact left a massive crater, resembling a gaping maw in the middle of Iwagakure.
ROAR!
The wooden dragon coiled around the giant's arm sprang to life, weaving through the remnants of the Iwa-nin, leaving death and destruction in its wake.
"Don't give up!"
"Charge! With me!"
Despite their mounting losses, the Iwa-nin pressed forward, recklessly throwing their bodies at the wooden behemoth. Some even detonated explosive tags strapped to themselves in a desperate attempt to delay its advance.
They weren't fearless. Far from it. But retreat wasn't an option.
Beneath their feet lay their village. Behind them, their families—wives, children, parents—huddled in shelters. If they retreated, who could stop this monstrosity?
After crushing another group of Iwa-nin beneath the wooden giant's foot, Tobirama frowned.
This pace was far too slow.
Even though a single swing of his giant's arm could obliterate dozens, there were simply too many enemies. At this rate, he'd be fighting until sunrise.
Moreover, his goal wasn't just to defeat the Iwa-nin. It was to erase Iwagakure entirely from the map.
That left him no choice but to employ some less-than-humane forbidden jutsu.
A faint smile played at Tobirama's lips as the wooden giant formed a series of seals.
"Wood Release: Advent of a World of Flowering Trees!"
Massive trees erupted from beneath Iwagakure, their roots twisting through the village's streets and coiling around its towering stone buildings.
Nearly half of Iwagakure was engulfed in a dense forest, the once-sturdy village now resembling an untouched jungle.
"What is he doing?"
Carried on Akatsuchi's back, Ōnoki watched in confusion as the wooden giant ceased its destruction and reshaped the village's terrain.
"Tsuchikage-sama, what do we do now?" Akatsuchi asked, his tone heavy with despair.
Ōnoki surveyed the devastation around him—the countless corpses of Iwa-nin, the ruin of their once-proud village. Then he looked at the resolute faces of the remaining Iwa-nin, their eyes filled with a determination to die fighting.
Clenching his fists, his hoarse voice rang out:
"Akatsuchi, take a squad and inform Kurotsuchi to lead the remaining civilians and ninja to the capital of the Land of Earth. Make sure they're protected during their retreat. The rest of you, come with me. We'll fight Tobirama to the death!"
From the moment the wooden giant appeared, Ōnoki had known that Iwagakure was doomed. Against a calamity like this, he didn't see any hope of victory.
But as the Tsuchikage, his duty was to stand and fight—to buy time for those who could escape.
"Tsuchikage-sama…" Akatsuchi, the burly ninja, shook his head furiously, tears streaming down his face. "I won't leave you!"
"Go! That's an order from the Tsuchikage!" Ōnoki snapped, jumping down from Akatsuchi's back, his face resolute.
"Yes!" Wiping his tears, Akatsuchi gathered a group of young Iwa-nin and retreated toward the rear.
"To the rest of you—stand with me! Protect our village!"
Ōnoki's voice echoed through the ruined streets.
"For Iwagakure! For the Tsuchikage!"
Under Ōnoki's leadership, the remaining Iwa-nin launched a desperate charge against the colossal wooden giant.
"Hmph. Ōnoki does have some backbone," Tobirama mused, his eyes narrowing at the sight of the old Tsuchikage leading the charge. "In that case, I'll respond in kind."
With a flick of his hand, Tobirama retrieved a single paper bomb.
He let it drift down, adhering to the wooden giant's chest.
"Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags!"
The first paper bomb exploded, seemingly harmless.
Then two more appeared, exploding in turn.
Four. Eight. Sixteen. Thirty-two.
Each explosion spawned exponentially more paper bombs.
By the time their numbers reached the hundreds, the chain of explosions shook the wooden giant. Yet with every blast, Tobirama poured more chakra into the construct, forcing it to regenerate just as rapidly as it was destroyed.
The result was a towering, self-repairing bomb—an unstoppable engine of destruction.
Thousands. Tens of thousands.
As the fire-engulfed giant marched into the dense forest created by Advent of a World of Flowering Trees, a catastrophic explosion erupted, consuming all of Iwagakure in an earth-shaking inferno.
