Chapter 37: Chapter 37: A Father and Son Talk
Masaki Uchiha and Fugaku Uchiha returned to their estate.
The father and son had not gone to sleep, instead sitting silently face-to-face in the room.
After a long silence, Masaki Uchiha finally asked, "What are your thoughts on this Chinya, Fugaku?"
Fugaku looked up at his elderly father and asked, "Father, are you asking about Chinya's abilities specifically, or something else?"
Masaki replied, "Then tell me everything."
Fugaku spoke solemnly, "Honestly, I don't know much about Chinya. When he entered the Ninja Academy, I'd already been there for two years.
Still, I've heard quite a bit about him here and there—he was somewhat of a celebrity at the academy.
Because he wasn't recognized by our Uchiha Clan, he became an easy target for others' resentment toward us. During his first year at the academy, he was constantly picked on.
By the time he reached his second year, such incidents had become extremely rare. His class boasted a prodigy—Minato Namikaze, the very same kid who'd later be taken under Jiraiya-sama's wing.
Chinya was the only one who even came close to matching Minato's genius. Since they couldn't beat him anymore, they switched to verbal abuse.
But no matter how harsh their words were, never once did Chinya throw a punch in response. There were absolutely no reports of him getting into any physical fights."
After hearing Fugaku's words, Masaki Uchiha frowned. "To have that kind of strength and still let insults slide… Chinya really knows how to hold himself back."
Fugaku continued, "However, there was one incident where he did resort to violence—and it caused quite a stir.
Three years after entering the ninja school, a transfer student joined Chinya's class. Not long after, a certain event shook the academy.
That red-haired transfer student got targeted because of her long crimson hair. But she was strong enough to take down every single one of her tormentors.
Later, I heard that a student from Chinya's class tried to get revenge on her by bringing his older brother—a genin—to confront her. Chinya almost chopped off their arms and legs.
I also heard that Jiraiya-sama and Tsunade-sama were in the village that day and showed up just in time to stop Chinya."
As Masaki listened, his frown deepened.
He asked Fugaku for the exact date of the incident. After some calculation, Masaki discovered that just a few days after this event, Chinya presented the Thunder Breathing Nin-Taijutsu to Konoha.
Was handing over the martial arts style to Hiruzen Sarutobi meant to quell the controversy...?
Masaki then asked, "Fugaku, is there anything else?"
Fugaku nodded. "Yes. I also heard that Minato was there that day—and apparently lost to Chinya. Not long after, Minato became Jiraiya's disciple. Ever since then, whenever they met at school, Minato would challenge Chinya head-on… but he never won again."
"Nine-Tails?" exclaimed Uchiha Masaki in shock. "Are you saying Minato Namikaze had already begun training under Jiraiya but never once defeated Chinya?"
Uchiha Fugaku replied firmly, "That's right. Because their battles only lasted that one year. Right after that year, Minato graduated early and left with Jiraiya-sama for training journeys. Even during their last battle, Minato still couldn't defeat Chinya."
Now Uchiha Masaki truly stood astonished.
Orochimaru had taken Chinya as his disciple just a month ago.
This meant Minato, who had become a disciple of Jiraiya—one of the legendary Sannin—still couldn't defeat Chinya even after receiving direct instruction from Jiraiya.
And back then, Chinya defeated Minato entirely through his own natural talent and strength.
Even without the Sharingan, Chinya's natural abilities were truly remarkable.
Uchiha Masaki asked curiously, "By the way, Fugaku, who exactly is this transfer student you mentioned?"
Fugaku thought for a moment. "I think her name is Kushina Uzumaki."
Masaki's expression stiffened slightly.
Noticing his father's unusual reaction, Fugaku asked, "Father, is there something special about this Kushina Uzumaki?"
Masaki's expression shifted slightly. After a brief silence he said, "Fugaku, you will eventually inherit my position and become the next clan head, so it's time I told you certain things.
Yes, Kushina Uzumaki is indeed special. She holds tremendous importance for Konoha. You know that Lady Mito was the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, right?"
Fugaku nodded solemnly. "Yes, Father. You once told me that people chosen to host tailed beasts are called Jinchuriki and are commonly treated as military assets by their countries."
Masaki continued, "Exactly. Lady Mito's full name is Mito Uzumaki, and she also had red hair—you probably figured that out already."
Fugaku's eyes widened in realization. "Wait! Does this mean Kushina Uzumaki will become a Jinchuriki?!"
Shaking his head, Masaki explained, "Not quite, but almost. Kushina Uzumaki will become the second container of the Nine-Tails. This is a closely guarded secret within Konoha. Apart from high-ranking officials like myself, no one else knows this.
Lady Mito has grown very old; her days are numbered. Therefore, Konoha must begin considering succession for the next Jinchuriki role. Kushina Uzumaki, as a member of the Uzumaki Clan like Lady Mito, was naturally chosen for this responsibility.
Fugaku, let me ask you one more question—is Chinya particularly close with Kushina Uzumaki?"
Without hesitation, Fugaku confirmed, "Yes, they're extremely close!"
Letting out a sigh, Masaki said gravely, "Then our chances are gone."
Confused, Fugaku asked, "Why would you say that, Father?"
Masaki answered solemnly, "Fugaku, the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki belongs solely to Konoha. No ninja clan can be allowed to lay claim to that kind of power."
Chinya had formed a close bond with the boy who would one day become the Nine-Tails' jinchuriki, and since the Hokage himself did not intervene—going as far as allowing Orochimaru, one of the Sannin, to become his mentor—it became clear that Chinya could never return to the Uchiha Clan. Even if we consented, and even if Chinya were willing, it's no longer possible.
Uchiha Masaki felt deeply frustrated about allowing a clansman with an awakened Sharingan and exceptional talent to remain outside the clan.
Fugaku Uchiha saw things more clearly than his father.
Fugaku believed that even if the Uchiha Clan accepted him, Chinya would probably never want to return anyway.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have broken the arms of Uchiha Motoi and Uchiha Mū.
That Chinya did this and openly revealed his Sharingan showed he was clearly no longer afraid of any repercussions from the Uchiha Clan.
In Fugaku's opinion, Chinya and the Uchiha Clan would likely never reconcile.
