Chapter 8: You Should Have Asked Your Wife
Although he was a bit in a rush, Axel stopped by the coffee shop the first thing in the morning, on his way to work. He really wanted to pick up the tarts for Ollie, to cheer the boy up, and if he waited until later, who knew, they could be gone again! So, he got off the car and crossed the street, pushing the door open with the accompaniment of the soft, pleasant chimes.
River was there again, standing behind the counter and taking charge of the orders. He smiled at Axel as the Alpha entered - a fake smile, but Axel couldn't tell. It looked genuine enough in his eyes.
"Ah, hello! Nice to see you again!"
"Um, hello." Axel nodded, his cheeks lightly flushing. River looked even cuter with such a wide smile on his face! If Axel didn't know, he'd totally mistake the man for an Omega!
Well, he already did so the day before, but it seemed to have slipped his mind.
"How can I help you today?" River, or rather Elias, put down the container he had been refilling, and stepped to the register.
"Same as yesterday! Uh, that is, one macchiato and the poppy seed tart, but five this time!"
"Five?" Elias arched his brow with amusement. "Quite hungry today, huh?"
"Hahah, that's not it! I just thought it might be a good idea to pick up more in the morning so that I can bring them home, in case you're going to run out again!"
"Ah, makes sense." Elias nodded, and moved on to prepare Axel's coffee. His eyes, however, kept wandering toward Axel's neck.
"Uh… Is something wrong?" Axel couldn't help but look down on his body once he noticed Elias' gaze. Was there perhaps a stain or something?
"Ah, it's just your tie. It seems a bit crooked… You might want to fix that." Now that he was asked, Elias plainly pointed out.
It was indeed crooked. Actually, crooked was an understatement. The knot was a complete and total mess. It was because Mrs. Chandler had to leave early due to work, and Axel didn't think to ask for help from a maid… He thought he did a decent enough job himself.
But now he was no longer so sure anymore. "…Is it bad?" He tossed Elias a furtive glance.
Elias finished the coffee, putting on the lid, and placing it on the counter. "To be honest, yes. You should have asked your wife for help."
Axel's smile, already a bit awkward, turned even more so. "Ah, I… don't have a wife," he muttered with a hint of hesitation.
"Oh?" Elias paused, a bit surprised. He had expected Axel to have married someone by now. They were both 24 already, and while he wasn't all that familiar with how things were in rich families, from what he had heard, it seemed a lot of them got married, or at least engaged, pretty early on.
"I'm sorry, you mentioned that you have a kid, so…" he quickly started explaining himself.
Was it weird to remember such a thing about a customer who only stopped twice by the shop? Luckily, even if it was, Axel didn't seem to think so.
"Ah, yes. But Ollie's daddy… He's not around," Axel turned his gaze away, rubbing his neck awkwardly.
Elias was tempted to press further, curious as to how Axel would explain himself to someone unrelated… But, no matter how open and babbling Axel was, everyone had their limits. And Elias couldn't risk appearing too intrusive, not so soon.
So, he could only force a compassionate expression onto his face, as he said, "I'm so sorry to hear that."
A compassionate expression. For the Alpha that tossed him aside. Compassionate for the fact that said wretched Alpha was left alone. Elias' stomach churned, overwhelmed by a sudden urge to throw up.
But Axel, dumb and dense as always, failed to realize. "Ah, no, it's alright," he smiled, a bit sadly. "It's a bit complicated, but, well, it's alright."
It's alright.
It's alright?
Elias was screaming inside.
Seriously, just how shameless could a person be? After all of that…
"It will be 15.75," Elias twisted his lips in a polite 'customer service' smile, putting the box with the tarts on the counter next to Axel's coffee.
"Thank you! See you around!" Axel swiped his card, grabbed his things and rushed out of the shop. It was already quarter to nine, he wanted to be at the office around this time!
Once the door closed behind him, Elias finally exhaled with relief, brushing back the few loose strands of his dyed, straightened hair.
It was all going well. He should be glad. He really should. Although that wretched Alpha's presence made him almost physically sick, it should pay off in the long run. Getting close to Axel would help him with his plans, whether regarding Ollie or his revenge…
Ollie.
The corners of Elias' mouth lifted, this time in a genuine smile.
So his son's name was Ollie.
Overwhelming warmth spread throughout Elias' chest. Suddenly in a much better mood, he hummed lightly under his nose, as he moved on to organize stuff behind the counter.
Meanwhile Axel, after entering his company's building, instead of his office, headed to the bathrooms. There, in front of the mirror, he struggled with his tie, glancing at the instructions on his phone, and failing miserably in following them.
"Do I really need a wife? But it would be stupid to get a wife just so that she could fix my tie…" he muttered under his nose, furrowing his brows. It was supposed to be just a simple knot, so why was it so hard for him to get it done properly?
"Perhaps I should have asked him for help… I wonder if he knows how to tie it? Or is his wife doing it for him…" Axel's fingers paused at the thought. Did River have a wife? For some reason, he was suddenly curious.
"Well, anyway," he sighed, giving up on his tie. It didn't look any better, perhaps even worse, but it was almost nine. It was only his second day, and being on time was more important than how his tie was tied. He hesitated briefly, his fingers hovering over his collar, before he shook his head and removed the tie completely, stuffing it in his bag.
No tie was better than a messy tie, right?
