Chapter 6: The Most Beautiful Omega I've Ever Seen
Warm afternoon sun was flooding the drawing room, twinkling in all the glass vases and crystal chandelier, and hitting Axel on the eyes as soon as he entered, blinding him. He had to squint his eyes for a moment to adjust, as he glanced over the people gathered.
Ollie, led by Mrs. Chandler by the hand, was already sitting on one of the sofas, his short legs dangling in the air. The energy from just a moment ago seemed to have vanished without a trace - he was now just a quiet, shy little boy, dropping crumbs all over his lap as he nibbled on his cookie, his head lowered.
"This must be Oliver?" Celeste, sitting opposite Ollie and Mrs. Chandler asked with a polite smile.
"Yes, isn't he just the most adorable?" Axel tousled his son's chestnut locks, taking a seat right next to him.
Celeste nodded, ever so polite, "Yes, he is very cute."
Ollie's head snapped up, his heterochromatic eyes tossing the woman a furtive glance, only to drop his head even lower than before, hiding his reddened cheeks.
The servants busied around the Chandlers and the guests, bringing apple juice for Ollie, as well as pouring fresh cups of tea for the rest. To the people gathered, however, there were more or less like air, just some background noise. Such was their role, getting things done, but remaining mainly unnoticed. Axel was used to it - things had been this way since his birth - so he didn't even glance at them, and besides, his attention was focused on Miss Celeste.
It was a good response, the way she said it. Complimenting Ollie's cuteness, but not gushing over him like some other Omegas tended to. While in Axel's eyes, Ollie was most certainly adorable enough to deserve even the most over-the-top reactions, he was also aware that at least some of them were faking it, in order to suck up to him… That's how it always was, right? And, since he was too dense to tell honesty and fakeness apart, he had no choice but to be vary of everyone.
"He takes a lot after his daddy," Axel said casually, just throwing a random remark…
Clang!
Mrs. Chandler put her teacup down with a bit too much force, her eyes giving Axel a reproachful glare. 'Why would you mention that Omega?' was what she clearly wanted to ask.
Axel ignored her completely this time though, still focused solely on Celeste.
If the woman was in any way displeased by the topic, she didn't let it show. She was still as before - elegant and poised, sitting with a perfect posture, her back straight and legs pressed together. A picture of a perfect young Omega. Her response was just, "Then his daddy must have been very beautiful."
"He was," Axel nodded. "The most beautiful Omega I have ever seen."
This time, the corners of Celeste's pink lips clearly twitched, even though in the end, she was able to maintain her practiced, polite smile.
Clang!
Mrs. Chandler put her cup down too loudly again. She was seething now, her cheeks flushed and a vein throbbing on her strained neck. One could almost see clouds of smoke puffing from her nostrils. But she had to hold herself back. She couldn't argue with her son in front of their guest!
"I think I should go." Forcing another polite smile, Celeste stood up from the sofa.
"Oh, dear. Already? Axel has just come back home, I'm sure he would love to chat with you some more!"
"I would gladly do so as well, but I'm afraid I can't today. I promised my parents I would go to the opera with them tonight…"
Having said that, Celeste bowed down, and excused herself from the room, led by the maids.
Silence fell in the drawing room again. It didn't last long though - as soon as they heard the front door shut in the distance, Mrs. Chandler exploded.
"Why would you… What would you bring up that man?! And praise his looks? The most beautiful Omega you've ever seen? Are you out of your mind?" she spouted in a raised voice, shooting words so fast she was almost out of breath. "It's been six years! Who knows if that, that slut is not dead! And even if not, then he's probably either in some cheap brothel, or latched onto another poor, naive Alpha! The likes of him always end up that way!"
"Mum." Axel interrupted his mother's tirade, his voice calm but stern. "Not in front of Ollie."
"…Ah." Mrs. Chandler finally reflected on herself, looking down on the boy. He was in Axel's arms, his ears covered… But no matter how hard Axel pressed his hands, Ollie must have heard at least a part of it… And, while he had never met the Omega in question, he was still his birthing parent. There was no way he would be unaffected.
"Ahem, I'm sorry," she cleared her throat. "I just lost my cool for a bit… I didn't mean it that way…" She stretched her hand to stroke Ollie's head, but before she could, Axel lifted the boy, getting up from the sofa.
"I'll take him up now, we can talk more later."
For once, Mrs. Chandler didn't try to argue with her son. "Alright. Dinner will be ready in an hour."
"…I get it."
Axel stepped out of the room, holding back a sigh.
Yes, it had been six years. Way too long to be still hung up on an Omega whom, all things considered, Axel never even knew all that well. But it wasn't so much that he was hoping they could ever get together, even if he succeeded in finding Elias - if that was possible, then Elias wouldn't have ghosted him back then…
Still, he didn't want to, no, he REFUSED to, think the man was as bad as his parents made him out to be. Even if Elias left Ollie behind with no word, perhaps he had his reasons. At least he left him in a safe place, where the boy would be cared for…
They walked up the stairs in silence. Even when they entered Ollie's room, and Axel put him down on the bed, the boy still didn't speak out. He only looked down with his lips pouted, trembling lightly.
"Hey. Is everything okay?" Axel crouched down, lowering himself to his son's eye level.
Still, the boy refused to meet his gaze. His little fingers twisted the hem of his shirt, his shoulders curled inwards, causing his already tiny frame to appear even smaller.
"…Is it about what grammy said?" There was a lot of hesitation in Axel's voice as he brought up the topic. Truth be told, he had no idea how to handle the situation. He was still quite young himself, after all, and had no experience with children! But what he did know, however, was that the issue had to be addressed, or else Ollie would just keep mulling over it. "Don't listen to it… Grammy didn't mean it, she's just angry because your daddy left…"
Wrong answer.
Mentioning Elias' leaving only made Ollie even sadder, tears pouring down his chubby cheeks. The boy still didn't speak though, only the sobs shaking his tiny body could be heard from him.
"Ah, no. Don't cry… I'm so sorry. It's my fault, okay? It's my fault that your daddy left, okay? Daddy loved you very much… But because I'm such an idiot, he had no choice but to leave… I'm so sorry. Will you forgive me?"
Ollie finally looked up at Axel with his teary eyes. Eyes that looked so much like Elias'. Even the doubt in them was so alike.
A sharp pang stabbed through Axel's heart.
The boy didn't quite believe him. If his daddy really loved him, why would he leave? He was still too young to understand how complicated life could be… Well, Axel was much older, and he didn't actually understand it either.
But at least Ollie calmed down now. Sniffing his nose, he nodded. "Um. I will."
"Good boy." He tousled the boy's hair and wiped his cheeks. "The maids will help you get changed and wash up now, okay? We're going to have dinner soon."
Leaving Ollie in the maids' skilled hands, Axel stepped out of the room. And, as soon as he did, he pulled out his phone, checking his mail.
A moment later though, he turned off the screen again with a disappointed sigh.
There were no new messages from the detective agency. No progress in his search.
…Just how could a person disappear like that, without a single trace?
