Chapter 5: Mom, Not This Again
As the driver pulled into the driveway in front of the Chandler mansion, Axel immediately noticed that something was… well, perhaps not wrong, but unusual. There was another car parked there, even though they weren't supposed to have any guests today, not as far as Axel was aware. And the car wasn't one he recognized, so it wasn't any of his parents' close friends or business partners that visited…
Unless they've got a new car, of course. That was a perfectly valid possibility.
However, Axel's instincts told him it was something else. Something he wasn't exactly unfamiliar with, but considered it a bother nonetheless.
It would be nice if he could sneak in quietly and escape to his room before anyone noticed his return. But how could he do that, in a mansion full of servants? Right from the entrance, the butler greeted him, "Welcome home, Young Master!"
Well, there it was. He forced a smile onto his face, and returned the greeting. "Good afternoon, Paul. Do we have any guests?"
"Yes, Young Master. Mistress is having tea in the drawing room with Young Miss from the Griffin family. Would you perhaps like to join them?"
"Ah, no, there's no need! I will go get changed now!" Axel rushed toward the stairs…
But how could it be so easy? Mrs. Chandler had already heard him enter the house, and knowing her son, she knew exactly what to expect. Thus, before he had a chance to flee, she appeared in the foyer. In person, as she knew any maid could be dismissed too easily.
"Axel, welcome back. Come join us. You remember Miss Celeste Griffin, right? We're having tea right now…"
"Ah, yes, yes, I remember her." Axel nodded absentmindedly, although truth be told, he wasn't even paying any attention to who his mother was talking about. "I'll pass this time, I don't want to intrude."
"Nonsense! I'm sure Miss Celeste would love to spend some time with you! It could be a good opportunity for you two to get to know each other better."
'So it's Miss Celeste,' This time, Axel caught the name. And yes, he remembered her. He was quite familiar with all the eligible Omegas around his age, his mother made sure of it. Recognizing the Omega in question, however, hasn't changed his attitude toward the meeting in the slightest.
Not that he had anything against Miss Celeste. She seemed like a nice person.
'Seemed' was the keyword.
No matter how gentle and sweet she, or any other Omega, appeared, in the world or Alphas and Omegas, especially those from affluent families, the first - and the second, and the third - impression could be deceiving…
"I've just come back from my first day at work. I want some time alone now," Axel tried to excuse himself.
But how could Mrs. Chandler give up so easily? "You always have some sort of excuse," she pointed out, her heels clicking sharply on the marble as she trailed after Axel up the stairs. "I'm not telling you to discuss your engagement right now, just give her a chance!"
Axel only increased his speed, reaching the top of the staircase in a blink of an eye.
Annoyed by her son's disobedient behavior, Mrs. Chandler furrowed her brows. "Think about Ollie! Wouldn't you want your son to have a complete family?"
Finally, Axel paused, letting out a heavy sigh.
"Mum, I don't want to have this discussion again," he said in a tired voice, loosening his tie.
It was precisely because of Ollie that he was reluctant to get married.
He had seen it way too many times in the novels he read online, a beautiful Omega acting caring and kind, but later on abusing their stepchildren when the Alpha parent wasn't around, cheating them out of inheritance for the sake of her own. Maybe those were all fictional stories, but if so many authors wrote setups like that, then surely there must have been something to it, right? Either way, Axel didn't want to take his chances.
His own happiness he didn't mind, he could get by even if he got his heart broken again… But not Ollie. There was no way he'd be willing to gamble with his son's future.
Maybe if they spent a few years getting to know each other. Or better yet, if his future partner was an Alpha or a male Beta, so they wouldn't have any more children. Then, Ollie could have two parents at the minimal risk.
But how could Axel explain it to his parents? They didn't understand. In their mind, the heir to their business empire should have a beautiful, elegant Omega from a good family by his side. And preferably have more kids. Because while they might have showered Ollie with love… it still didn't change the fact that he was born of an Omega of questionable origins. And even looked like him. He might have been their grandson… But he wasn't suitable to be Axel's heir.
Which made Axel even more certain of his decision to remain unmarried. If even his parents felt that way, how could he expect any better of his potential partner?
He was about to say something else to finally end this pointless argument, but at the same time, a cheerful call reverberated through the foyer.
"Grammy!"
The maid had finished taking Ollie's jacket and changing his shoes, and the boy was now running toward them, his little feet trotting on the floor excitedly.
'Oh no,' a thought passed through Axel's head. He turned his eyes to his mother…
And he was too late. Mrs. Chandler was already down the stairs, reaching her hand to Ollie.
"Welcome home, dearie! How was your first day? We're having some tea and snacks in the drawing room right now, would you like to join us?" Unlike her strict tone a moment ago, her voice was now dripping with sweetness.
And somehow she 'forgot' to mention that there was a guest present, so that Ollie wouldn't get shy. The boy had only heard 'snacks', and instantly grew excited.
"Yes, Granny!" He smiled, his eyes turning into crescents and his chubby cheeks growing even rounder.
Axel closed his eyes and let out a heavy sigh. Now that his son was lured in, he had no choice but to follow…
