Chapter 164: Chapter 162 The Aftermath
Cana looked at the fainted idiot in her hands and sighed. She immediately laid him on the ground and used sensing magic to check the condition of his body.
'He has pushed himself too much, but the damage seems to have no lasting effect on his body. Just resting would ensure that he heals. And if I'm right, the way he is healing is different from normal. The damned system might be doing those improvements he talked about before,' Cana thought.
"Well, how is he?" Lucy asked, and the others also wanted to know his current condition.
"He's just too tired from how much he pushed his body just now. He might sleep like a log for a few days, but other than that, there are no problems," Cana replied, which earned sighs from all around.
"So can we party now?" Natsu asked with an expectant expression.
"Yes, we will—just after we deal with the aftermath of these prisoners," Jura replied, which earned a groan from Natsu and Happy, but laughter from others who saw their expressions.
Things went smoothly after that as the council members, headed by Lahar and Doranbolt, appeared to deal with the captured criminals. But since Karna was not conscious, he was unable to recognize Doranbolt, and due to the memory magic he had used, none of the other Fairy Tail members managed to recognize him either.
Since the leader of the expedition was Jura, a member of the newly appointed Ten Wizard Saints, he informed Lahar that he would report the entire battle within a few days before the council and the Wizard Saints, after ensuring that the alliance members who took part in this mission were taken care of.
Lahar agreed but didn't forget to ask whether the now-fainted Karna needed medical attention. This was declined, as Cana was certified as a medic by Porlyusica, who was regarded as the greatest medic in all of Fiore—even by the council, who were reluctant to give that title to someone who did not interact with them. Cana informed them that the only thing he needed was rest, and the medics had no grounds to disagree.
But Doranbolt was disappointed, as he had planned to use the opportunity to perform memory magic and steal secrets from Karna's mind. He felt cheated, as the now-fainted Karna was the best opportunity they ever had to get those secrets.
From then on, the council made sure that the rubble of Nirvana was thoroughly destroyed, as the members of the council had decided that such cursed artifacts that could manipulate people's minds were safer destroyed than left to be used by someone else. This undertaking would take days to complete, so the guild members accepted Wendy's invitation to rest at the Cait Shelter Guild.
The celebration at Cait Shelter went without a hitch, and Natsu and Happy decided to tie Karna up like a scarecrow and make him "join" the party since he had fainted. Gray was reluctant at first but joined in, knowing they might not get another chance to do it, as Karna normally didn't join in the guild's brawls.
Cana made sure to take a few pictures with her card magic while it was happening, for later use.
While the party was going on, the time came for the tribe leader to reveal the truth about the village. The revelation that they were illusions created for Wendy was also shared. It was a touching moment—every single person had tears in their eyes, with Wendy and Carla crying the loudest.
Karna was still asleep at the time and missed the chance to get a lot of information from the chieftain that he would be unable to get from others—like the illusion magic that created lifelike beings and the secrets of Nirvana. But in a way, his exhaustion had saved him from something even more dreadful that day.
At the site of Nirvana, where the demolition process was ongoing:
While every member was making sure that not even a single stone was left unturned during the cleanup process, and while the spies of the dark guilds tried their best to get any information possible, there was one person whose presence went unnoticed by every single person in the clearing.
Though that ignorance could be said to be their greatest blessing.
The man walked toward the center of the rubble and picked up a half-broken board that contained a name. But even without the rest, he was able to spell out the complete name as if it were imprinted in his memory.
"Nirvit Research Institute," he muttered. "The place where I began to free myself from my mortal form."
He then looked toward the direction of Cait Shelter.
"He had made his soul connect to Nirvana to watch over it, so my old friend must have passed away by now. What else should I expect from that fool who decided to remain mortal for the sake of something as useless as morality," he scoffed as he began walking away.
But suddenly, he froze. He sensed something that should not have existed.
"Death... my death. How can it be here?" he muttered as he faintly sensed the presence of something that should not have existed here.
He immediately pushed his senses to the limit, covering the entirety of Fiore, but he did not find the source of the death energy even after scanning every nook and corner visible to his senses.
"Mavis Vermillion, Zeref Dragneel. They were the only two who were supposed to find the truth of life and death. Both had been cursed and under my calculations.
Who is this third new person who managed to access that knowledge on their own?"
The man looked agitated. Even a hint of fear appeared in his eyes. But the next moment, the fear vanished, replaced by certainty.
"No matter. I will make sure to handle it when the time comes, as I always have." He began walking as a dark portal appeared in front of him.
"After all, I am Ankseram—the God of Death."
