Chapter 466: [464] The Black Death Faction
The night passed in silence. Asagi hadn't slept a wink, her mind replaying those scenes over and over.
It felt like she and Kojou had never truly understood each other. He'd hidden his identity from her and surrounded himself with other girls.
And she, from start to finish, had never gotten a single answer.
Thinking about it, she felt like a failure—someone who'd accomplished nothing.
The next day, Asagi dragged herself to Saikai Academy, looking visibly worn out. When she glanced at Kojou in class, a flicker of disappointment and gloom crossed her eyes.
"Asagi, are you okay? You look terrible," Rin Tsukishima said, her voice full of concern as she noticed Asagi's haggard appearance.
"It's nothing, Rin. Just worked late last night and didn't sleep well," Asagi replied with a faint smile. Rin was probably her only real friend and confidante at this school.
As for Kojou, sitting nearby, he didn't even notice Asagi's exhaustion. He was slumped over his desk, still stewing over yesterday's events.
He genuinely despised August, but he knew he wasn't a match for him.
That left him at a loss. In the past, he'd have gone to Natsuki for advice, but now that August and Natsuki were clearly closer, he didn't want to bother. Plus, lately, Natsuki had been far less strict with him—no longer constantly hovering or reminding him to keep his identity under wraps.
And so, the day's lessons began. Whatever was going on with them, they were students first—class came before everything else.
---
In a research lab on Itogami Island, a sealed door suddenly burst open, and a group of people stormed in.
A researcher in a white coat hurriedly stashed some items away before turning to face the intruders.
"Who are you people? This is a Level VI classified area—no one's allowed in here without clearance!"
His first instinct was to throw his rank and status at them. In a secure lab like this, entry without proper authorization was strictly prohibited.
"Yosuke Makimura, head of R&D at Kana Alchemy Industries, correct?" one of the intruders asked.
"That's me."
"Chief Researcher Yosuke Makimura, the experimental materials in this facility are suspected of violating magical trade regulations. We demand you immediately disclose all internal data and surrender the materials."
"Violating trade regulations?"
"That's impossible. There must be some misunderstanding."
"No misunderstanding. Just recently, we apprehended a beastman from the Black Death Faction."
At those words, Yosuke, who had been gearing up to argue, froze. His gaze turned icy as he stared at them.
As a member of the Black Death Faction himself, he knew what this meant. If they'd come knocking, they had evidence. In that case—
"Die, all of you!"
The frail Yosuke erupted into action, transforming into a hulking beastman.
The sudden shift caught the leader off guard, but just as the attack was about to land, a chain surged from behind.
Boom~
The force sent Yosuke crashing into the wall, shattering it.
Natsuki stepped into the room as two security team members rushed forward, restraining Yosuke and slapping a pair of demon-sealing handcuffs on him.
These cuffs were specially designed to suppress demonic power, and even with his beastman strength, he couldn't break free.
Natsuki ignored the commotion and headed straight for the research table. Scattered across it were photos and data that hadn't been deleted from the computer in time.
One look at it all, and she knew trouble was brewing—big trouble.
"This is what the Black Death Faction's been smuggling? It looks ancient—like antiques or something," one of the team members remarked.
"In a way, yes. But if the Black Death Faction is moving this stuff, there's a reason. Take him in. I bet we can squeeze something useful out of him," Natsuki ordered.
"Yes, Instructor Natsuki."
In the island's security team, Natsuki's word was law—even the team captain didn't outrank her.
"Instructor Natsuki, what is this stuff?"
"Weapons. Legendary god-killing weapons called Nalakuvera, said to have been forged by the gods to slay primogenitors."
"Nalakuvera? God-killing weapons? But these look like relics. After all this time, can they still work?"
"I'm not sure, but it might have something to do with these documents."
Natsuki studied the materials in front of her. If Asagi were here, she'd recognize some of them.
Meanwhile, the Black Death Faction was making its move.
Led by their leader, beastmen from the faction infiltrated Itogami Island from multiple entry points.
They'd even seized control of Vatler's Oceanus Grave (with Vatler's intentional cooperation), bringing items from the ship onto the island.
---
At Saikai Academy, in the first-year Class B of the high school division, Asagi spent the first two periods in a daze. She hadn't slept all night and was barely holding on.
"Asagi, how late were you up last night?" Rin asked.
"Not that late—just all night."
"Just all night?! You can barely keep your eyes open. Let me take you to the infirmary—you need rest."
"Is that okay?"
"Why wouldn't it be? It's not like you're skipping class on purpose. And in your state, can you even focus on lessons?"
"Alright, then."
With Asagi's agreement, Rin led her out of the classroom.
They made their way to the infirmary. Whether it was luck or coincidence, the place was empty—no nurse or duty teacher in sight.
"Rest up. I'll come check on you during lunch break."
"Okay. Call me if anything comes up."
"Got it. Sleep already."
"Mm."
Exhausted, Asagi climbed into one of the infirmary beds, closed her eyes, and drifted off almost instantly.
Rin shook her head with a small smile and left the room.
