Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Encountering Something Dirty
"I've seen the appraisal report, it is indeed a Level 9 disability."
Ye Yan's heart sank. "What's the worst outcome?"
"If the court establishes the crime of intentional injury, there could be a sentence of not more than three years of fixed-term imprisonment. Xiao Zhun and the others are minors, the court should leniency or reduce their punishment."
Regardless of whether the court would be lenient, it was certain that Ye Zhun would not be able to continue high school and go to college; his academic career would be destroyed, and even his future became an unknown.
"Ah Yan, this is the worst-case scenario, but we haven't reached that point yet," Meng Tian comforted. "If the other party accepts compensation and doesn't press charges, Xiao Zhun won't be affected. Or, we find sufficient evidence to prove that Xiao Zhun and the others were the side acting out of righteous bravery. Looking at the current situation, since the other party is wealthy and powerful, it's very likely they won't accept a settlement, so we need to find a reliable lawyer right away."
"Okay, we'll find a lawyer," Ye Yan forced herself to remain calm, "The best lawyer."
"I know a senior lawyer named Mr. Lin who specializes in these kinds of criminal cases; I've already arranged a meeting time with him, I'll send you the address in a bit."
"Tiantian, thank you," Ye Yan stepped forward and hugged her friend, grateful. "I'm lucky to have you."
"Alright, stop with the cheesiness, Xiao Zhun is like my brother too."
Ye Yan knew that Meng Tian's access to the appraisal report must have violated precinct principles, and the senior lawyer she mentioned must also not be an easy man to hire.
She kept all of this in mind, silently noting that there's a long road ahead.
The next day at 8 a.m., Ye Yan arrived early at the agreed-upon café.
Meng Tian said that Lawyer Lin was an elite in the legal field and that he had never lost a case he handled. He was picky, though, not about the cases but about the clients.
That meant, having money wouldn't necessarily get you his services, but being without money was also worth a try.
As Ye Yan looked at the menu in her hand, she couldn't focus on a single word. No matter how complicated the surgeries were, she never panicked or faltered, but thinking about the upcoming meeting, she felt a genuine, deep-seated nervousness.
If she said the wrong thing, or if she displeased the esteemed Lawyer Lin... she didn't know where to find another lawyer as good.
At that moment, someone pushed the door open, and Ye Yan was still staring blankly at the menu.
The person glanced in her direction, seemingly confirming the seating, and with a positive conclusion, he strode over.
"Hello."
A clean hand was extended towards her, faintly carrying the scent of soap.
Ye Yan lifted her head, and a figure unexpectedly crashed into her sight.
The man wore a tailor-fitted high-end suit, his tie meticulously arranged.
The golden sunlight created a radiant halo around him, his eyes, as if adorned with black jewels, were deep and intelligent.
He exuded an elite, impeccable aura.
As their eyes met, both were momentarily startled.
Before Ye Yan's eyes, the image of a boy's stubbornly straight back, standing in the rain turning his head with a river of hatred in his eyes, suddenly appeared.
Even after ten years, his face had matured from its youthful innocence, making it hard to see the boyish features from before.
But those eyes – Ye Yan could never forget them.
His name was Lin, Lin Yihang.
The Lin Yihang who had been forced to transfer schools in his first year of high school because of her, who had moved his entire family away from Ao City Peninsula.
Clearly, Lin Yihang recognized her as well.
"Hello," Ye Yan extended her hand hastily; she hadn't forgotten that he was the hard-to-hire senior lawyer.
But Lin Yihang simply withdrew his hand, naturally sliding it into his pocket, his gaze on her not showing the slightest warmth.
Ye Yan felt sure that Lin Yihang had recognized her. He was so smart even when he was in school, it was only natural that he'd have such achievements today.
Suddenly, she didn't know how to start.
Should she ask him how he had been over the past ten years, or should she talk about his current case?
It seemed that whatever she said would be wrong.
Fortunately, Lin Yihang spoke first.
"Miss Ye, I believe Miss Meng must have told you, I take cases based on fate, not the case itself."
Ye Yan was still clutching the corner of the menu, her knuckles turned white from the grip.
"I'm sorry, Miss Ye doesn't meet my criteria." Lin Yihang's voice was calm, betraying no emotion, "Please seek someone more capable."
Watching Lin Yihang turn to leave, Ye Yan abruptly stood and chased after him, subconsciously grasping the back of his suit jacket.
"Mr. Lin, set any condition you like, just as long as you can help my brother with his lawsuit, I can keep out of your sight."
Lin Yihang looked expressionless, "Miss Ye, please have some self-respect."
"Mr. Lin, please reconsider..."
Lin Yihang looked down at this woman who was a head shorter than him. Undeniably, she was still as beautiful as ever, beautiful in a pitiable way, beautiful in a pure and aloof way, beautiful enough to stir the heart at a glance, more charming and mature than when she was in school.
Especially when she was asking for help, that aggrieved appearance seemed to invite any kind of manipulation and playfulness.
"Miss Ye, what makes you think I would reconsider?" Lin Yihang's face was as cold and merciless as his voice, "Because your family is more disgusting than others?"
Ye Yan looked at the face in front of her, familiar yet strange, and slowly released her hand.
The corner of the jacket she had grabbed was wrinkled.
Lin Yihang left the cafe, and as he passed a street corner, he took off his coat and threw it into a trash can.
Through the glass, Ye Yan watched this and knew she could no longer hire this prominent lawyer.
But her brother's case still needed to continue; she had no time for emotional drain.
She remembered Mrs. Qin, who had said when she was discharged that the Qin family had a certain status in the legal world and that if she ever encountered issues in this area, she could call her.
Ye Yan would not normally take advantage of a doctor-patient relationship, but for Ye Zhun's sake, she couldn't care about that.
Mrs. Qin was very fond of Ye Yan, her own illness having been cured by her, and responded with great enthusiasm when she received the call.
Upon hearing that Ye Yan was looking for a lawyer, the first person she thought of was also Lin Yihang.
"I'll talk to Lawyer Lin, given the Qin family's influence, he should be willing to help out," Mrs. Qin said confidently, but all Ye Yan could do was give a bitter smile.
Anyone else, and Lin Yihang would surely have helped for the Qin Family's sake, but not for her.
"Mrs. Qin, there might be some misunderstanding between Lawyer Lin and me. Do you have any other recommendations?"
"Lawyer Lin is definitely the best in this area... How about I arrange a meeting with Xu Lv for you?" Mrs. Qin didn't ask further and directly helped Ye Yan with the contact.
With a recommendation from Mrs. Qin, it was sure to be among the elite in the industry. Only then did Ye Yan feel half the weight lifted off her chest.
Outside the cafe, Lin Yihang got into the back seat of the car.
The assistant, seeing him return in just a shirt, couldn't help but remind him, "Lawyer Lin, your... clothes."
Had he forgotten them somewhere?
"I threw it away." Lin Yihang flicked his cuff, "It touched something dirty."
