Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Ye Zhun in Trouble
That night, Ye Yan still returned to her apartment at Grand Hall.
Though the flat had only one bedroom and one sitting room, and she could not see the Ruins of St. Paul from the window, and although it was an hour's drive from the hospital, its value lay in its freedom and comfort.
To her, Yuqiao, however splendid, was more like a cage made of gold threads—it was not home.
Ye Yan put the clothes that Fu Xingzhou had worn into the washing machine.
After taking a bath, she sat in front of the computer to write research material. Medical English was mostly obscure and difficult to understand, and Ye Yan wrote with utmost care, fearing grammatical errors.
By the time she finished the last letter, it was almost midnight. Thinking of the surgery scheduled for the next day, she finally turned off the computer.
Picking up her phone, she remembered having sent a message to Fu Xingzhou earlier. Opening the chat box, the last visible message was still hers.
Fu Xingzhou hadn't replied.
She probably thought it was an unimportant detail, or perhaps, the result was already expected by him.
Or maybe, he was busy with his business inland, his phone always with his bodyguard.
Ye Yan didn't realize that, in just a few seconds, she had already made several excuses for Fu Xingzhou.
Ye Yan saw Jiang Yuan again during Mrs. Jiang's surgery.
Jiang Yuan's face was still swollen. He averted his eyes upon seeing her, as if she were a flood or ferocious beast.
"Miss Ye, my mother's surgery...," Jiang Yuan spoke cautiously and pleasingly.
The surrounding nurses were all stunned.
For the patients and family members on the VIP floor, whom else did they consider their equals, treating them like servants?
Even if their attitude toward Dr. Ye was different, it never reached this level of servility.
Had Jiang Yuan gone mad? Or had his body been possessed?
Ye Yan pulled out the surgery form and handed it to Jiang Yuan, her peach blossom eyes under her dark hair calm as still water, "Sign here."
Jiang Yuan didn't hesitate and signed obediently.
"I have my own professional ethics. I treat all patients the same, irrespective of who they are," Ye Yan handed the surgical consent form to her assistant, "And I hope Mr. Jiang adheres to his own moral baseline."
"Of course, of course, Dr. Ye, please be at ease."
Ye Yan donned her surgical mask and turned to enter the operating room.
The surgery went very smoothly. Mrs. Jiang's tumor was successfully removed, and the biopsy indicated it was benign. The Jiang Family was overjoyed.
After that day, Jiang Yuan didn't appear on the VIP floor again.
One week of easy, joyful days later, Ye Yan's tranquil life was again disrupted by a phone call.
She asked for leave from Director Bi, and hurriedly went to the Huajia Police Station.
"You are Ye Zhun's…" The receiving officer sized her up.
"Sister."
"Ye Zhun is inside, you can go in," the officer allowed her to sign some documents, "but don't stay too long."
In the cramped space, the young boy in school uniform sat quietly at the table, his amber eyes hidden behind his tousled hair, his long eyelashes harboring a hint of the wildness of youth.
At the sound of the door opening, Ye Zhun finally looked up.
"Sister." Emotion rarely seen in the young man flickered.
Ye Yan sat down and took his hand across the table.
Her little brother, who once followed her, had grown so tall; she now found herself looking up to him.
"Sister, I actually..."
Ye Yan cut him off, "I believe in you."
Ye Zhun attended Yongyuan High School in Ao City, which was one of the top high schools, and being in his second year, he was considered a top student extensively nurtured by the school.
There was a saying at Yongyuan—if Ye Zhun didn't rank first, it was only because they started the rank count from second place.
The incident wasn't complicated: Ye Zhun and two classmates intervened to stop some individuals from harassing a female student. A physical altercation ensued and escalated to a fight.
Normally, this would be considered a commendable act of bravery, and the school wasn't planning on holding the students accountable; instead, they intended to award them.
But that night, one of the social thugs involved collapsed suddenly upon reaching home, and a medical examination at the hospital revealed a cerebral hemorrhage.
The thug's family filed a report, resulting in Ye Zhun and his classmates being taken to the police station.
"Sister will handle it," Ye Yan reassured her brother, "You did nothing wrong. In that situation, you chose to step up, to prevent the girl from being molested; who knows what terrible things could have happened if not for you and your friends."
A weak girl against two grown men stood no chance; if they succeeded, her life would be ruined.
A girl had once leapt from the fifth floor of their hospital.
"Sister, I have no regrets," Ye Zhun said firmly. If given another chance, he'd throw those punches again, "I'm just causing troubles for you again."
Ye Jian'an, their father, had never cared for them; it was Ye Yan who raised him on her own. His ability to sit peacefully in school was all thanks to her.
She had given up opportunities to study abroad for him, her talents worthy of broader horizons.
"I'm your sister; if I don't care for you, who will?" Ye Yan smiled and stood up, "Anyway, if I can't manage it, there's still your Sister Tiantian."
Meng Tian rushed over from the district office.
On the way, she had already cleared up the situation and even greeted the police chief.
But when she saw Ye Yan, there was a complication.
"This situation might not be so easy to resolve," Meng Tian said, pulling Ye Yan to the side of the police station and showing her phone, "The injured party is a wealthy second generation; his family holds some sway over at Dangzi Island. They have a relative involved in social media who stirred up the situation online right after the incident occurred, and now public opinion is fermenting uncontrollably."
Ye Yan took the phone and indeed saw multiple news stories on Facebook claiming three high school students had bullied a female classmate, who were coincidentally seen by two passersby. The passersby stepped in to help, but got beaten by the three high schoolers, one suffering a head injury and judicially determined to be at a Level 9 disability.
Incidents of school bullying had gradually drawn social attention and sympathy in recent years, so these news pieces immediately sparked a backlash online against the three high school "bullies."
Fortunately, because they involved minors, their faces were pixelated, but the comments seemed orchestrated, directing hostility toward Yongyuan High School and specifically mentioning terms like 'top student.'
It wouldn't be long before their identities were exposed.
"They're distorting the truth," Ye Yan shook with anger, "Ye Zhun was the one who bravely intervened."
"Ah Yan, stay calm, of course I believe in Xiao Zhun," Meng Tian stopped her from continuing to read the toxic comments, "The other party has already filed a case. What we need to do now is get a good lawyer for Xiao Zhun."
"Is that person really at a Level 9 disability?" Ye Yan felt as if a bottle of hot lemon juice was poured on her heart, severely sour.
