Chapter 416 - The Men in Suits (Part 1)
By the time Zac, Soren, and June arrived at the marked location on their map, they found themselves in front of a large, residential building.
The sun was slowly setting for the day, and June wanted to take advantage of the few minutes of visibility to safely extract Trinity from the building. However, when they peeked through the parking lot's gates, they saw a couple of black SUVs blocking the entrance.
None of the vehicles had a tag, which June was aware was a common practice for either criminals or government agents, and the fact that there were seven cars made it even more suspicious.
"They are already here…" June muttered.
"Are these the 'Nekxis' guys again? What the hell is their problem?" Zac pondered aloud.
Residents of the same building wanted to enter their homes, but tall men wearing suits and sunglasses didn't allow anyone inside the premises, refusing to give any explanations.
June noticed that the suited men were showing the residents a plaque, which was proof that they were government agents. Still, even from far outside the gates, June could tell they were fake.
"You can tell from here?" Zac asked, forgetting that June used to be a great detective, so spotting fake credentials was nothing but a trifle for her.
"We just have to rescue a woman, yes?" Soren interjected with another question, believing that he could simply waltz through the group of suited men into the building.
Even for a berserker like Zac, his plan sounded a bit too flashy.
Camille had asked the members of the Jade Dragons to lie low for some time, as the aftermath of the battle with Netherius was still fresh, so making a huge scene would utterly contradict that.
"Wait… That might not be a bad idea," June replied, explaining that Soren could create a diversion for them to sneak in.
After the ex-detective whispered her plan to the warrior and the berserker, their eyes looked determined, and without wasting any time, Soren walked up to the entrance of the building, towering over the disgruntled residents.
Since the people of Nekxis didn't have any information about the newly arrived party, they wouldn't recognize that the warrior was part of the Jade Dragons. Moreover, he was more than capable of taking care of a few armed men by himself if the situation happened to get more dangerous.
"Hey, I want to get into my home!" Soren shouted. "Stand aside!" he continued, prompting some of the other residents to pump their fists in agreement.
As the commotion became louder, both June and Zac climbed the gate from the side, relishing the opportunity when nobody was watching.
Standing beside the property, Zac used his hands as a stand to boost June upwards, using a bit of strength to throw her up to the second floor, where she held onto a window's ledge and skillfully broke inside.
The redhead followed behind and jumped high enough to reach the same broken window, finding themselves in the middle of an unknown, empty living room.
"Now we have to find the right apartment," June commented, slowly opening the front door to peek outside into the hall.
"All clear. Move out," she continued, silently stepping out into the hall and making her way to the stairs leading up to the other floors.
Zac followed the ex-detective, knowing she had far more experience than he did in those kinds of situations. Still, the utterly silent environment inside the building felt a bit eerie.
Before they could reach the seventh floor, they spotted another group of suited men standing beside the stairs, seemingly guarding it from people.
June gave Zac a signal and pointed to one side, signaling the redhead to take care of one of the guards while she dealt with another.
In an instant, Zac grabbed his opponent from the back and quickly choked him with his arm until he was unconscious, covering his mouth so that the man couldn't ask for help.
The redhead felt a little proud since Megan had taught him that move, and even though it was the first time he used it outside of his training, he felt happy about the results until he noticed June's technique.
Instead of grappling with her opponent and using excessive force to make them pass out, she gave them a quick, solid chop with the side of her palm, striking the back of the neck and putting them to sleep in an instant.
Once they quickly dragged the unconscious bodies out of sight, June told Zac to take their suit and put it on, as they would try to blend in with the others to get to the right apartment.
Zac was a little uncomfortable, as he didn't want to undress a guy, but when he looked to the side, he noticed that June had already dressed up in one of the men's suits, leaving him unconscious with nothing but his underwear.
With a bit of reluctance, he followed orders and put on the suit and sunglasses, hoping that the agents wouldn't catch them. Then, they went up the stairs and replaced the guards they had just taken out.
As they gazed into the hall, more suited men were standing outside one of the apartments' entrances, which led them to deduce that Trinity was there. However, the fact that they hadn't taken her yet was suspicious.
They were unaware that Trinity was hiding in a secret room, prompting the search to take much longer. Still, their delay was an advantage to them, as it meant they could still safely extract the hacker from the building.
Their plan was to casually approach them and enter the apartment as if that was their job the entire time. The more confident they looked, the longer it would take the others to notice their disguises.
The pair knew it was risky, but they couldn't wait until the agents either brought Trinity out or killed her on the spot, so they decided to act.
"In the worst-case scenario, grab Trinity and run. I can deal with these guys… probably," Zac commented, and even though he was a berserker who had defeated powerful opponents, such as the Barbarian King, he always had a small seed of doubt in his mind.
