Chapter 417 - The Men in Suits (Part 2)
As June and Zac calmly walked towards the apartment that was being searched by the agents, they heard one of them say that they couldn't find anyone inside.
Trinity herself was the one who asked for help, so the pair knew that the hacker must've been hiding pretty well. Still, the agents were not giving up, and when one of them decided to take out a strange device, they became a little more nervous.
The agent was holding what looked like a scanner, no larger than a smartphone, and while June believed it was some kind of heat detector, Zac could sense a faint trace of mana coming from the device.
The redhead's mana detection wasn't nearly as accurate as Dante's, but it had gotten much better after all of his experiences, and the fact that he could sense mana coming from the machine alerted him.
"They are using 'Spellcore,'" He muttered, as they had enough evidence to know that the agents were part of the Nekxis organization, which they suspected but couldn't prove.
June wanted to stop them, and without a clear plan in mind, she got even closer to the agents while Zac followed behind. Still, before she could even raise her voice to distract them, the agent turned the device to the side and ordered the other men to check the closet's walls.
At the same time that June and Zac were starting to panic and prepare themselves to fight off the agents blocking the door, a loud bang could be heard from outside the building, making everyone cautiously freeze in place.
'Was that…?' Zac pondered, but he didn't have time to think about Soren when two agents were thrown inside the apartment through the window, utterly beaten to a pulp.
The rest of the agents instantly pulled out their weapons and aimed at the shattered window, wondering how they had gotten there when they were on the seventh floor.
Relishing the opportunity, June bolted forward to take down the distracted agents, and it took Zac a brief second to come to his senses and follow her lead.
As June skillfully knocked out one agent with a kick to the back of the head, Zac was a bit rougher and grabbed the other man's head before slamming it on the floor.
A few other agents turned around when they heard their colleagues getting attacked from behind, but they couldn't ignore the commotion outside, confusing them and splitting their attention.
June quickly zig-zagged towards an agent who was pulling out a gun from his jacket, grabbing the arm holding the weapon and snapping his elbow, making him drop the gun on the floor before it could be discharged.
Two other agents placed their sights on June, but they were promptly taken down by Zac, who ran straight and tackled them with such force that they were flung against a wall.
'I miss my bat…' Zac thought.
"Trinity, let's go!" June shouted, hoping that the hacker was hiding in a place where she could hear her.
Now that the mission had turned into a full-blown battle with the agents, June saw no reason for Trinity to keep hiding, as it was best to take her and leave the area as quickly as possible.
Suddenly, before Trinity could answer or leave her secret room, Zac noticed one of the agents taking a strange, metallic orb from his pocket, causing his eyes to widen with shock.
He could sense that there was mana flowing from the artefact, and it seemed to be heavily condensed into the small sphere.
When the agent raised his hand and aimed the orb towards Zac, he instinctively covered himself, sensing that he wouldn't be fast enough to catch his opponent before the device could activate.
Not even a second later, a deafening sound struck his ears, with a low tone that resembled the horn of a cruise ship, making his bones rattle and preventing him from moving.
The moment Zac stopped hearing the noise, he raised his gaze and lost his breath, sensing a mighty and invisible force pushing him out of the apartment, causing him to crash against the main door, which was flung open into the hallway along with the redhead.
Zac coughed a few times and waved his hand, trying to blow away the dust while removing the debris that landed on top of him.
He was a bit confused at the attack he received. It was obviously using mana, but he couldn't see any projectile or wave, reminding him of a few of Dante's spells, which could literally obliterate a person with an invisible energy that was hard to perceive.
As he quickly stood up and looked ahead, he noticed that the agent was now aiming the orb towards June.
It would only take a second for the device to activate, and while Zac's berserker body could withstand such pressure, he was afraid that it would tear June's body apart.
Still, right when the redhead strained his muscles and gritted his teeth, prepared to rush into the action, another loud bang interrupted the scene as Soren broke through the window into the apartment, utterly destroying the frame and the wall around it.
At the same time, the agent activated the orb and unleashed an invisible force towards June, making her flinch and cover her face with a defensive stance. Nevertheless, instead of feeling pain or being flung into a wall, she felt a tight, warm embrace.
When she opened her eyes, she found herself in Soren's arms, whose back was letting out smoke after receiving the blast for her, tattering his new clothes.
It was the exact same attack that sent Zac flying out of the apartment, but Soren didn't even move an inch after getting struck, surprising the redhead, slowly realizing the true gap in strength between them.
June couldn't help but blush after seeing Soren hugging her, and her expression changed to fear when she spotted the trail of smoke coming from his back.
"A-Are you okay!?" She nervously shouted with a hint of guilt in her voice.
With a confident smirk, Soren locked his gaze with hers and proudly stated that such weak attacks wouldn't work on him, which seemed to make June blush even harder.
'Man… What the hell am I witnessing?' Zac pondered, looking at the two lovebirds in the middle of the destroyed apartment, surrounded by a curtain of dust and smoke, with unconscious secret agents lying around.
