Chapter 411: Baba Yaga’s Inspection
While Baba Yaga was talking with Camille right after her speech, the handler was about to ask for more details about her Atlantean lineage, but they were interrupted by Paige, who was way too eager to learn more about the lost civilization.
Atlantis had been a legend since the times of the ancient Greeks, and Paige honestly revealed that she had no intentions of investigating anything about it until that moment.
Yaga recognized the scientist's name since Dante and Megan had mentioned that she had been working on replicating the Spellcore weapons, making the witch a little wary of the woman.
Turning to look at Dante, Yaga waved her hand and called upon him, asking him to bring to her all of the people that had awakened their magic from the warlock's contract.
It didn't take long to gather them in the auditorium, making Zac, Megan, Alice, and Paige stand shoulder-to-shoulder like soldiers.
The witch glared at each individual with scrutiny, as if her eyes were giving her more information than what was visible.
"Ummm, are we okay?" Zac pondered aloud after a few seconds of silent thinking.
Unbeknownst to the redhead, the witch was inspecting the umbra and mana flow inside their bodies.
It wasn't a difficult spell to use, but Yaga's version gave her a much more detailed perspective of the energy she was trying to read—intentions, emotions, desires—the qualities that would decide if Yaga eliminated them or let them live.
Humanity wasn't ready to learn magic, so if she found even a sliver of corruption from them, she would have no other choice but to end them.
After inspecting each individual for a little over a minute, Yaga closed her eyes in reflection and gazed at Dante. "It seems like you know what you were doing," she commented.
It was clear to her that Dante wasn't making his contracts with just anybody. The people he had selected were worthy of casting magic, as they had no lingering desires for greed or power.
Zac, Megan, and Alice had a strong sense of responsibility, and Yaga could tell by the energy flowing inside of them that they sought power in order to protect what was dear to them.
Paige, on the other hand, was leaning more on curiosity—an overwhelming feeling of wanting to learn about everything.
Still, her intentions showed no malice. Instead, Yaga could see that Paige wanted to use her inventions for the good of humanity.
After taking a deep breath and sighing in resignation, Yaga stated that the group had passed her test, so she would spare their lives.
'Our lives were in danger!?' Zac pondered.
When Yaga was finished investigating the Omega Team, Camille pondered if the witch wanted to check on the others, as they also had demons and cyborgs in their gang, and the handler wanted to win Yaga to their side.
The witch had no interest in demons, explaining that their appearance in their world wasn't uncommon. However, when she noticed that the cyborgs had souls inside of them, her curiosity was slightly piqued.
Sami, Lexia, Vesnia, and Isidor were called to the room for Yaga to inspect, and the witch seemed amazed at the utterly different flows of energy that their bodies produced.
Sami's soul had the frame of a Demon King, but the content inside that frame was nothing like a true demon's. Moreover, Yaga could tell that the cyborg hadn't mastered her magic, as there was potential hiding within her.
Lexia and Vesnia were similar. Both of them were humans in their lifetime, which was clearly reflected by the shape of their souls. However, the magic flowing from Lexia was almost non-existent while Vesnia had a decent supply of energy.
When the witch looked at Isidor, she scrunched her face with discomfort, sensing that the cyborg used to be a Holy Knight.
Fortunately for Isidor, Yaga didn't hold as much contempt for the Holy Knights as she did for the angels.
Angels like Gabriel were artificially created by "the gods," while Holy Knights were humans who were forcibly charged with "ether," the energy used to cast "blessings."
There was a clear difference between the two. Angels blindly followed anyone they considered a god since they were "programmed" to do so, while Holy Knights were victims of the church's brainwashing.
Thanks to Isidor's soul getting transferred into the body of an android, the church's doctrines that had been ingrained into his mind were slowly disappearing, giving Isidor a sense of dread and uncertainty.
He had committed numerous atrocities in the name of Goddess Aelara, and Yaga could sense his shame in the energy his body produced.
"These cyborgs are fine as well," Yaga said with a satisfied smirk, getting interrupted a second later by Wolfram.
"I'm here. I thought we were done, so I went back to the lab…" Wolfram said, quickly approaching the group that was being inspected.
When Yaga looked at the shorter female cyborg walking in and standing before her, the witch dropped her head laterally in confusion.
"Your soul and your body don't seem to match very well. Though I can see you are an experienced mage…" Yaga commented.
Wolfram wasn't sure how to explain that she was the Jade Dragons' enemy not too long ago, and the body she was given was a "punishment" from Imera, the Sacred Beast.
The mage's original body was that of an old male sage, so Imera thought that a good way to humiliate him would be to transfer his soul into an android that looked like a young girl.
Yaga was a bit curious to know the real reason for the punishment, other than siding with the necromancer, as she could see that there was more to the cyborg's words.
Dante explained that Wolfram had killed a Sacred Beast to open the convergence, which made the mage a target for all Sacred Beasts to hunt. However, Yaga seemed completely unbothered by the information.
"I see. If it doesn't concern this world, then I don't truly care how you got here…" The witch said with a bit of indifference, making Wolfram sigh with relief.
