Chapter 33: Chapter 33: The Glow Within
"Annoying!" Aetheris fired an energy blast directly at him.
Bang!
Victor raised the shield in his hand, somehow managing to deflect the blast.
"What the hell?" Aetheris froze. That same energy blast had once sent Abomination fleeing in terror—how could Victor block it so easily?
When Aetheris got a clear look at the object in Victor's hand, he suddenly understood. It was a red shield with a star in the center—the iconic symbol of Captain America.
That was none other than Captain America's Vibranium Shield.
"You traitor! You actually stole from Stark Industries!" Aetheris shouted in fury. That was his tech.
"What do you mean 'Stark Industries'? I'm a shareholder too. This thing partly belongs to me!" Victor smirked.
"You son of a—!" Aetheris roared, igniting his thrusters and launching himself like a missile at Victor.
Victor, having enhanced his body with a human augmentation serum, now possessed strength eight times that of a normal man.
His power, speed, and neural reflexes were far beyond anything human.
With a quick sidestep, he easily dodged Aetheris's charge.
Inside the Mark II Hellfire Armor, Aetheris couldn't use his Wing Chun techniques at all. All he could do was swing his arms mechanically. Not only did he fail to land a single blow on Victor, but he was repeatedly forced back by strikes from the Vibranium shield.
Suddenly, Aetheris remembered that the suit could fire projectiles. He activated his thrusters, widened the distance, and shot toward Pepper's location. He scooped her into his arms and soared into the sky.
The battle was too destructive. He couldn't risk Pepper getting hurt.
After all, he could take down those two lunatics anytime, but if anything happened to Pepper's body, that would be a real problem.
Victor didn't chase. Instead, he freed the restrained Norman Osborn.
"What are you doing? Why aren't you going after him? That was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! It's going to be much harder to kill him later!" Norman snapped, furious.
"Sure, killing him is important," Victor said softly, "but your place in my heart is more important."
The side effects of the human enhancement serum were starting to show. Originally a straight man, Victor had somehow been turned after that wild night.
Smack! Norman slapped him across the face.
"Focus on the bigger picture! Don't fall for my looks!"
Victor chuckled. "I don't think we need to do anything. All of America now knows the Iron Man armor came from Stark Industries. He's going to have a tough time handling that."
"Don't just sit there grinning like an idiot! I don't care—I want that Iron Man armor too!"
"No problem, darling. I still hold ten percent of Stark Industries shares. That armor is partly mine as well," Victor replied, gazing at Norman with a look that could melt steel.
"Doctor! Doctor!" Aetheris flew the armor straight to the best hospital in New York, his voice booming as stunned bystanders watched.
"Sir, please put the lady down!" A nearby officer drew his pistol, aiming it at the armored figure.
"Get a doctor! Now!" Aetheris opened his faceplate, revealing his identity.
Click click! A crowd of onlookers immediately pulled out their phones and started recording.
"Breaking news! Iron Man is actually Tony Stark!"
"Explosive headline!"
"He's so hot! My hubby is so handsome!" a fangirl screamed.
"Mr. Stark, is this the latest weapon developed by your company?"
"Mr. Stark, what's that glowing thing on your chest?"
Aetheris placed Pepper onto a stretcher that had just been wheeled over, then grumbled, "It's a lightbulb, dumbass."
"Wow, Stark's glowing nut is real!""Shocking! Stark only has one nut!""Breaking news! Stark grew a glowing nut!"
Aetheris quickly called Happy, informing him that Pepper was at New York First People's Hospital and urging him to send someone to care for her immediately.
Then, ignoring the gawking crowd, he piloted the suit back to the Osborn Group.
But the place was already deserted.
"Damn it, those two idiots ran off!" Aetheris roared, venting his frustration by blasting the lab to shreds, leaving the Osborn Group facility in ruins.
"Wait... I already bought out Osborn's shares. This place is about to be mine!"
Realization hit.
"I got so caught up in the moment, I trashed my own stuff!" He shook his head, then shrugged. He'd always been good at breaking things. It was just money.
And he had plenty of that.
After sending the suit home, Aetheris drove to New York First People's Hospital.
Pepper was still unconscious, but the doctor assured him it was due to blunt trauma—her life wasn't in danger.
"Doctor, has she... been—" Aetheris hesitated, clearly worried. He couldn't bear the idea of being betrayed.
"Mr. Stark, your girlfriend is still untouched."
"Phew—good." Aetheris let out a long breath. His main girl had to be safe.
Thank goodness. Otherwise, he would've regretted it for the rest of his life.
"Been drifting in New York for ten years now... sometimes I miss the old days... how things have changed, yet the sky still connects us..."
What the heck? Who's calling me?
He glanced at the unfamiliar number on his phone and answered.
"Hello, Tony? It's me, Rhodey."
"Uh, okay. Got it." Aetheris quickly ended the call.
The caller was none other than the future War Machine and one of his closest friends—Colonel Rhodes.
Rhodey had called after learning his identity as Iron Man, hoping he would keep it under wraps.
Aetheris twitched at the corner of his mouth. He'd just flown a full loop around New York tonight. Unless someone was blind, they'd already seen him.
And nearly everyone at New York First People's Hospital—doctors, nurses, and even patients—already knew he was Iron Man. Some late-stage cancer patients and people with broken legs were dragging themselves over on crutches and wheelchairs just to catch a glimpse of him. How was he supposed to keep that a secret?
Facebook and YouTube were probably flooded with videos already.
Hmph. As long as there weren't any private videos, the rest didn't matter.
Besides, the Avengers would eventually be exposed when they fought off the Chitauri invasion. This just meant his fame arrived a bit earlier.
But Rhodey also passed along another piece of information: the U.S. military wanted his Iron Man armor.
That was something Aetheris would never allow.
Even though he lived in America, Aetheris had always carried within him the heart of a proud citizen of the East. The blood in his veins still echoed with the voice of his homeland. No matter where he was, that loyal and unwavering spirit would never change.
No regrets in this life for being born Chinese. If there's a next life, he'd choose it again.
Looking at Pepper lying silently on the hospital bed, Aetheris even had the sudden urge to get revenge for the Boxer Indemnity.
